Dune (2021)
I had to force myself to watch it.
I dont think I've ever forced myself to watch a movie so much before and this was only because of all the good reviews. I found it incredibly boring... I made it just over an hour and half when I realised I had no idea what was going on or knew any of the characters names.
From what I remember it had good effects and was shot nicely.
Admittedly, I knew nothing of Dune before watching it, so if your a fan you might love it. But I never knew nothing of Harry Potter, Hunger games, Lord of the rings, game of thrones, maze runner etc etc before watching any of them and still enjoyed all of them.
6 Underground (2019)
Great action, but everything else is meh.
I think to many people tuned into this expecting a deep story and serious movie.
It's just stupid fun, over the top action, good effects and set pieces.
There is a few bits that could just be completely cut from the movie, these sections just want to give you a story as to why the main characters are doing what they are doing and they drag on little. There are other bits that do carry the film in more serious light sometimes which are quite unexpected due to its goofy nature.
For the action, effects, laughs and few serious scenes I give it a 7.
Prey (2022)
Not bad, but not great either.
I think I'm mainly to blame, I was expecting more. I sort of forced myself to watch it, constantly telling myself "it will be good, it will be good, it will be good." But by the end I felt like I wasted my time.
Not because its a bad movie, but because I put time aside for myself to watch this movie. I would of probably enjoyed it more if I didn't make a big deal out of seeing it as soon as I could.
The effects, setting, acting and main villain can't be faulted in my opinion. It's just that common mistake of comparing it to a classic and I was definitely guilty of this.
-Spoiler, sort of...-
One thing I will pick at though.... where is the gore? There is plenty of blood and violence, but it's often in the shadows, blurred out or the camera looks away quickly. For a film about a creature that rips out peoples spines to claim their skulls as its trophies this is completely forgotten about apart from one scene involving a snake and one scene involving a coyote. No trophies are collected from any humans. The creature does a great job dicing us humans up through out the movie, most of this is shown in ways described earlier. The start of it is quite boring and there's bits that try to be scary, but you see them coming way before they happen.
Die Hard (1988)
A must have for everyone's movie collection.
This movie was already 3 years old when I was born. I dont know how old I was when I first watched it, but I can say it was definitely before the year 2000, I remember the video case!
My love for this movie has only grown stronger as I got older, I was always happy for it to be on TV especially over Christmas time. I think this was an unintended Christmas movie? It's definitely a Christmas movie for me.
If something like this came out today it would most likely be forgotten about within the first few weeks, but this came out at the perfect time along with other gems such as Speed, Lethal Weapon, Connair, Bad Boys etc.
I recently cleared out all my dvds, this along with a few others I couldn't bring myself to throw it away despite it being shown on some movie subscriptions I have access to, I still wanted to keep a hard copy!
There is nothing I can say that hasn't already been said. I'd love to watch this movie today without any knowledge of it to see if holds up, if you haven't seen it do you self a favour and put it on your list. It's intense from start to finish.
Lightyear (2022)
The low reviews are incredibly harsh.
I think the main problem here is most people set them selves a very high bar because they were comparing this to "Toy Story" the second they decided they were going to watch it.
I'd go as far as to say there is no comparison to be had to Toy Story apart from some obvious references. This is hardly a spoiler, but right at the start of the movie it states "Back in 1995, a boy called Andy watched a movie about his favourite Toy, this is that movie."
I honestly think you should keep that in mind when watching this film. It's not trying to best Toy Story, it's a movie within the Toy Story universe.
If that doesn't sound good enough then atleast think about this, how would you feel if you seen this movie 27 years ago? It's hard to answer, but it's also hard to beat nostalgia and I think thats the main problem.
I enjoyed the movie enough I watched it all the way through, it wasn't boring or slow. There's some unexpected nice elements to it thats good for children to see too.
I give it an 8/10 because my inner child would of absolutely loved this back in the day.
