Magellan (2017)
This is why I don't watch movies.
The movie has a cool poster and an intriguing description, hence the two stars. That is all that is good with this flick. It's like clickbait. I should have known it was going to be bad when in one of the scenes you can clearly see it's water in the guy's beer bottle.
Godzilla (2014)
Who doesn't like a good cliché?
I don't see how they could have added another cliché if they tried. Let's see, "Main character who has nothing to do with anything saves the day?" Check. "Military making bad decisions?" Check. "Hero tells military about said bad decision?" Check. "Military goes ahead with bad decision?" Check. "Military regrets bad decision?" Check. "Military seeks advice from hero after bad decision?" Check. "Wife of hero cares more about other people than own child?" Check. "Gigantic monster inspects hero with its giant eyeball?" Check. "Monster/hero dead or passed out?" Check. "Monster/hero wakes up?" Check. "Monster not really monster but instead savior of humanity?" Check. "Reference to 'balance' in nature to explain away monster?" Check. "Superhuman strength? (several soldiers hand carrying a nuclear warhead)" Check. "Hero sacrifices himself?" Check. "Hero saved before sacrifice?" Check. "The son somehow reunited with hero and then runs away into a large crowd because he sees Mommy the hero somehow cannot see?" Check. So many more. Stop watching after Cranston dies and you'll be spared. Don't get me started on the music. I hate the Orchestra now. It's still better than Skyline, but just barely.
Gone Girl (2014)
Definitely worth watching.
If you're looking for a movie to watch and can't decide then go ahead and see "Gone Girl". The movie messes with your head which to me is far better than another mindless shoot-em-up, explosion-happy Hollywood time-waster. I suspect the negative reviews here are from the transforming, talking robot with attitude from space, movie crowd who are quick to point out a plot hole in movies they don't like while completely ignoring the massive elephant in the room plot hole in their favorite movie. The actors were superb, especially Rosamund Pike who was a real ball-buster. "Gone Girl" is a good movie that keeps you guessing and well worth watching.
Chosen (2013)
If you buy the premise then it's o.k.
Although somewhat cliché, the story flows intelligently and the acting is good. I almost stopped watching at the beginning when after being shot at he goes to work and his secretary calls him on his cell and their conversation goes like this: Lawyer: "Yeah" Secretary: "Are you close?" Lawyer: "Yeah, I'm downstairs, why?" Secretary: "Mr. Valverde's waiting for you. Lawyer: "Already?" Secretary: "He's been here for thirty minutes" in a hushed voice she says, "He ate all of the Skittles". I guess skittles are really important to him.
I just couldn't get past the premise of a bunch of rich people getting their jollies off of watching random people killing other random people and cameras are placed everywhere their victims/targets happen to be so they can watch. Phone calls are intercepted, cops are impersonated and they get lowlifes to set it up, all while keeping it a secret. If you can believe that then this may be for you.
Skyline (2010)
The Reason You Should Watch This Movie
This thing was so bad that I fast-forwarded past the first fifteen minutes until something happened in the movie. Then it was over two minutes later and then had to wait another 20 minutes for something else to happen and that same thing happened over and over and over throughout the entire thing. Aliens are so smart to be able to construct inter-stellar space craft and machines to suck out another species brains and somehow be able to use them to give them life but they can't find a guy hiding behind a kitchen island. C'mon. And really? the roof? The roof is the place you're going to be the safest from the flying aliens? Right, the Marines on the roof are going to save you instead of fighting the extraterrestrial monsters who have just invaded the planet. This is a movie you should watch just so you can say about the next bad movie you see, "At least it wasn't as bad as Skyline."
