Jupiter's Legacy (2021)
A great series, engaging characters and story
We just discovered this impressive series and couldn't stop watching. I understand it may have been cancelled because critics found there was too much drama and not enough superhero. There are enough Wham Bam shows around, which also have their place. Or did it touch on too many political questions? This series was thought provoking, with terrific acting, and very interesting storylines and characters. So disappointed there won't be another season - I wish the fan petition had been successful. Perhaps there will be a resurgence of interest if it's rediscovered by a new audience. One lives in hope! Lots more story to tell...
Home Invasion (2021)
Easy watching and some fun ideas
I didn't realize this was a series because it was presented as a movie on Prime. Although it explained the filming quality and pacing when when I found out afterwards. Regardless, it made sense to watch it in one sitting as for me there wasn't enough momentum to break it up and keep coming back.
I thought it was an amusing premise and had some enjoyable humour and characters, as well as some good twists. I had at least a couple of lols.
The set up with the nosy neighbour and her hubby was great.
I think it's sometimes enough that a show is entertaining, not everything has to be groundbreaking!
Mother/Android (2021)
Android motivation
I've read several reviews which make the point that the movie would be more fully developed if the rationale for the androids malfunction was known. I think the movie is going from the point of view of the humans - the event happened very suddenly, without an obvious reason, and the humans just had to deal with the reality of it. Because it happened so quickly and impacted networks etc. So completely, there was no ability to investigate the whys, and no ability to share information between humans and the groups they formed.
I thought the dynamic between the pregnant couple was interesting and realistic, in that they had to work out their differences of approach and opinion. But ultimately I was turned off because Georgia continued to come off as harsh towards Sam, and not supportive of him (for instance, when she insists on leaving the safety of the stronghold, which leads to a whole lot of trouble when Sam tries to make that happen).
I thought there was a lot that worked in the movie, but ultimately it didn't quite come together for me.
Red Notice (2021)
What's not to enjoy?!
It's interesting to see Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds working together - two talented people who seem to take pleasure in not taking themselves seriously, and who have funny schticks and great comedic timing. I also enjoyed this take on the genre, and I thought the story was engaging. Perfect viewing for a fun evening.
Stage Mother (2020)
Touching, sweet, and gentle
I thoroughly enjoyed this tale about the power of love, the power of a mother's love, and openness and compassion overcoming prejudices. A gentle, well-told tale with a happy and satisfying ending. Just what we need in these difficult times. And the acting and musical performances were great too.....
Downsizing (2017)
Loved this movie
Much more than I expected - I thought it would basically be just a comedy. There was entertaining comedy, as well as an interesting premise, social consciousness, and very engaging and unique characters and storyline. I don't think the marketing of this movie was effective, and possibly people went to see it with expectations that weren't fulfilled and so they were disappointed. I also notice that many movies which focus on the socio-economic and climatic state of the world do not seem to be well-supported - do some powers-that-be find them too threatening?
