Great vibe
27 July 2019
From the very beginning of De Libi, I kept on thinking to myself "ah yes, if I get asked next time how it is to live in Amsterdam, I have this movie to show as a response". More than anything, it seemed to capture the vibe really well. I don't think it would be as entertaining for Dutch people themselves as it is if you are a foreigner, but there's a lot of the humor to relate to for sure if you are watching as a kind of an outsider. Special round of applause to the actors. There were some nuanced layers in the characters that not everyone can deliver. I ran into this movie accidentally, so I had zero expectations. It's not going to be my next favorite movie, but I'm glad it exists.

Comedy with many layers
27 May 2019
I knew nothing of the Gintama universe when I came across this movie for the first time. I was simply browsing for something to fall asleep to during a long flight, but this actually made me fully wake up, as every frame was simply too much fun. Visual fun, meta jokes for creative types, social critique that doesn't take itself too seriously, all sorts of good stuff on many layers. Decent plot and great acting, very fitting for the genre (whatever the genre may be). Needless to say, I had to watch this movie on a bigger screen for a second time.

By itself it's already amazing, and it would have been possible to stop there. The movie did make me look up the manga/anime, too, for more context.

Good rhythm

Well paced, thought-provoking journey. You think the story reached its peak, but you blink and it suddenly sucks you right back in.

Picasso would love this
15 April 2016
No matter how many times I watch Picasso's Adventures, I always find some new jokes hidden somewhere. The humor ranges from burlesque to subtle hints, something for everyone.

The moves takes us through Picasso's life from his birth to his deathbed.

We see him from his first strokes and his world fame with everything in between.

You probably don't even need subtitles for this one, it works without words already. One out of the dozens of times I saw this, I did watch with subtitles for every language, that actually didn't add too much for me. I enjoyed it better just going with the least amount of subtitles or no subtitles.

A planet with no numbers
27 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
It has been a while since I saw Hard to be a God, and I keep thinking about it, so here are a few random thoughts.

It's set on a planet not to be confused with, but referring to medieval Europe.

I saw it as a contemplation about the power of knowledge, and the meaning of it all. It vaguely reminded me of Béla Tarr's Turin Horse cause of this contemplative tone.

The visuals are so strong, that even in black and white you can smell what's going on.

A note regarding the dialogue -- don't forget that this movie is supposed to be about people who can't think coherently. Don't expect any coherence in their speech.

Mixed feelings watching a good movie
6 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
If Inglourious Basterds wasn't set during WWII, I guess everyone would love this movie. Tarantino didn't feel the need of distancing from Nazis and their inhumanity? and that is what makes me sad after watching this. It's Jews' revenge on Nazis, and Art's revenge on War; so you start to feel as if you should like Nazis and War.

On the other hand, there are above average conversations and very good acting throughout the movie, so you'll love it if you don't care much about history. Everyone says Christoph Waltz is a good actor -- I have to mention that all the German actors were great including August Diehl and Daniel Brühl.

You have to watch this one, but you'll have to have mixed feelings after watching it.
