Community: Advanced Safety Features (2015)
The Honda of Steel Drum product placement!
The return of Rick Honda, nee Subway, and featuring an awe inspiring comic turn by the incomparable Frankie Dart. I don't understand the hate - it's like some people don't get that meta can be as subtle as a Hawthorne wipe in the wind, or as broad as Britta in the Glee Club. I think season six writing was as sharp as seasons 1-3, as evidenced by "You're just s stupid little man" et al, and no episode featuring both Paget Brewster and Keith David can be written off. But then again, I am a Level Seven susceptible when it comes to this show. Honda Honda Honda Subway Subway Subway - Six Deansons and a Movie!
Justified: Fixer (2010)
Keeps getting stronger
I'm a long time coming to this series, having missed it on first run. I've read quite a bit of Elmore Leonard, though, and the writers of this series seem to be doing a good job so far of maintaining the quality and spirit of the source material. This episode develops secondary characters and deepens Raylan's backstory. There are twists and turns, the requisite gunplay, and a fair amount of the sardonic humour I've come to expect. Raylan's boss grows on me more every episode - I hope that doesn't foreshadow his demise! I'll probably continue The Binge.
If I had a bone to pick, I would wish it weren't all filmed on a soundstage, or in and around L. A. I enjoyed the exteriors of the pilot, and wish the show had a more visceral connection with Kentucky.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
"She's Scottish"
Thoughtful, literate, deadpan and restrained. Immaculate casting, and great fun top to bottom. Your mileage may vary.
A Stitch in Time (2018)
A Fascinating Approach to History
As an actor, I am often at the mercy of costumers. We rarely choose our own clothes. The historical figures whose "costuming" is examined in this series range from royalty to gardeners, and I found it all quite intriguing. Our host is indeed charming and knowledgeable, and it was so nice to see the seamstresses sussing out the construction methods. Anyone trying to find liberal politicizing is just tilting at windmills. I wish there was more than one season!
