The Ritual Killer (2023)
Ignore the bad reviews. This is a good movie.
Don't believe what the naysayers say. This is a good movie and a worthwhile watch. It has all the elements that make up a good crime mystery thriller. And Morgan Freeman delivers. There is good acting by literally every cast member. The plot is mostly linear and easy to follow while also leaving the watcher asking themselves questions along the way. There's just enough horror to make it fun. And the info dump on other cultures is enlightening. In my opinion, the people who gave this a bad review came in looking for more of an action thriller and maybe some CG because of the awesomeness of Morgan Freeman, when it's really a true to form crime mystery thriller with just the right amount of action. Recommended with a strong thumbs up!
That '90s Show (2023)
Surprisingly fun!
I just finished watching the entire season in one sitting. Normally I'm not really a big fan of sitcoms but the combination of nostalgia, charm, wit and contemporary awareness was extremely entertaining to me. I loved seeing the original characters and was equally impressed with the new ones. It's upbeat, never slow and delivers as much of the famous non-PC content of the original. The subtle references to and acknowledgment of current trends, events and attitudes are worth a nod. Every one of the new actors portrayed their characters skillfully and charmingly. I look forward to more. Definitely worth the watch.
The Mandela Effect (2019)
Reality As a Construct.. one of my favourite topics.
Loved this. Was intrigued the minute I saw where it was going. This movie did not need a grand budget, brilliant CG or side plots. It stood strong on its own. The subject matter is one of my favourites. Tech artist in video games with a seriously gifted programmer partner; we have discussed this concept at length, without the benefit of scientific papers, videos or even conversation with anyone else. Just something we arrived at because of what we do and how we think. I found this film engaging, simulating and validating. If you love sci-fi with more cerebral and less flash you may enjoy it too. Good acting all round was an added bonus.
After the Pandemic (2022)
Not that bad, in fact kinda cute.
Ok, granted, it's low budget with younger, not so seasoned actors and a simple plot. But nowhere near as bad as some people have posted.
To be honest, it's refreshing. In fact it's kind of endearing and pretty well put together, totally fine to have on in the background while working on the computer.
The story is no less sophisticated than an episode of the walking dead.
The characters were endearing and believable enough for the viewer to overlook any obvious simplifications or shortcomings.
If you enjoy pandemic movies with a slow pace and don't mind low budget you might get a kick out of this movie.
I enjoyed it, having found both girls quite relatable.
Minamata (2020)
Powerful film. Oscar worthy.
Going in I confess I feared this might be one of those slow artsy fartsy movies that sleepafies.
On the contrary. It's beautiful. Moving. Johnny Depp does it justice.
It ended with me mute, lump in my throat, unable to speak.
With a lone tear falling down my left cheek.
And absolutely chuffed that this brilliant work was buried in NA until now.
Westworld (2016)
If not for sleepy music and wooden acting of lead female...
It could be good with it's mostly stellar cast and enough sci-fi content to capture interest. BUT the acting of the lead female is wooden. Boring. Annoying. And the music puts me to sleep.
Now if there was more Anthony Hopkins and and a Wood replacement I could rate it higher than 5. Sigh. Such a waste of potential.
His Dark Materials (2019)
Disturbingly Cruel
Now I like combat and killing bad guys and drama and serial killers as much as anyone but when it comes to animal and child cruelty I just can't. If I wasn't watching this with my snuggy bunny I wouldn't watch it at all.
The First Lady (2022)
Totally enjoyable.
Fascinating to see these ladies portrayed in a series. Loved this and wanted more. Michelle and Gillian were amazing. Viola Davis, who I love in everything else, overdid her part. I, like others, was very distracted by the mouth thing, but not enough to give up on the show. Definitely worth watching.
Alienated (2021)
Sleep watched it.
Acting was wooden. Couldn't get past that. I kept hoping for something to save it, but no such luck. Ended up sleep watching it. Probably got about 20 mins max out of it.
Encounter (2021)
Phenomenal Acting
Very Intense. All the acting is superb, especially the boys. It took some really excellent direction to pull that out of them. The story telling was gripping and the intensity increased progressively. Unexpectedly heavy social commentary housed within sci-fi dram. Need to follow with something light to unplug... o. O.
Tides (2021)
Sequel Worthy
Top notch acting, thought provoking, gripping. Excellent Sci-fi.
Ignore the negative Nancys. No regrets. Wanted more.
Manifest (2018)
McDon's churchy sci-fi
4 might be generous. Can't believe I'm sticking this out. Please tell me it's not like this to the end...
The I-Land (2019)
Definitely worth watching
This was fun to watch while working as most of my binging is done. It was a compelling story told at a good pace. In fact it could easily have went on longer before the the reveal and I would have been happy. I watched all 7 episodes in one sitting and was not disappointed. Great sci-fi/mystery/horror vibe. I can watch this genre all day long. PS, ignore the negative Nancy's...
Wisdom of the Crowd (2017)
Cancelled way too soon
This was a great show! Was really disappointed in just having one season. Would be great if it got picked up again.
Boss Level (2020)
Grand Theft Auto meets Groundhog Day
I tried to like it. But it annoyed me too much to finish. Not my kind of video game. Too much noise. No real drama. Ruins the awesomeness of Groundhog Day.
Blindspot (2015)
Pretty Fun series
I gave it a 9. It's probably closer to an 8 but the negative Nancy's made me do it.
When I binge something like I did with this it deserves a positive review.
Here are my pros:
- action packed, always a twist, never slows down for long
- the characters are well developed
- the whole tattoo mystery quests thing
- and the tech lab.. always love those
- the cast: I mean Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Madeline Burke - exquisite representation of evil. And Michelle Hurd as Shepard. And Jamie Alexander and Ashley Johnson and Ennis Esmer just to name a few. They were amazing. I could not take my eyes off them.
- got a real kick out of the over dramatization in some places. That's my kind of humour.
Totally worth watching
Only con and it's not really a con... because it doesn't fit in my wheelhouse as much as drama and mystery, - when the fast paced combat scenes come on I get to multitasking instead of giving them my full attention. The fighting was good and fun to watch but well.. I do that all the time.
Unforgiven (2009)
Compelling
Absolutely outstanding! So much so it leaves you wanting more.
