The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
If you thought Titanic was a great movie, move on---you're not in on the joke and you're probably not going to like this one
Still trying to wrap my head around how so many people could hate this movie so much. Actually, they're the ones who kept me away from it for so long but I just finally watched this in 2016 and... wow, I just had to say something for all of those who tried to keep me away from this brilliant work.
In addition to Titanic, I'll give another example: If you think Will Smith is a great actor and deserved that Oscar, again, you are probably not going to like this movie. This movie requires a bit of wit, a grasp of parody that goes beyond Naked Gun, and... well, I guess the slight edge of anyone who at one time or other was/is a bit of a malcontent.
Some people called this movie pretentious but it ain't. I guess if you get angry at pretentious people rather than understanding them (you can dislike them later), then again, you won't like this movie.
So if you don't pass the above criteria, don't waste your time. But if you can understand what I'm talking about then, yes, watch this movie. It's fun, the writing is awesome (exactly what you'd expect from Whedon), the acting is on point, and it'll blow you away.
Attack the Block (2011)
Facile Junk
Just have to add a comment because the scoring system on IMDb has really taken a turn for the worse. Some people just don't realize that a '10' is a masterpiece. 8-9 is brilliant. And a 7 is great.
This movie was just a complete waste of time. It should have been rated PG-13 because I think the only way you could really enjoy it is if you are 13.
Where to start? It's wanna-be writing of a story about wanna-be hoods. Really, this was just terrible. You figure you add enough references to playing FIFA on your Xbox and everything is good. And the ending? One of the most narcissistic pieces of junk I've seen in a long time. And how about that dialogue? Really, what kind of gangster says, "I'm not even lying." These kids would get killed in any proper ghetto. Finally, glow in the dark teeth? C'mon! I'd imagine it'd be a set-up for selling a bunch of cheesy costumes come Halloween if it weren't for the fact that the effects were so second-rate.
Now, some may tell you that this movie is a fine example of British tongue-in-cheek brilliance, but don't you buy it. The only way it's tongue-in-cheek is if you have absolutely no idea what irony or sarcasm is. Just a terrible, terrible movie.

Been a while since I laughed so much at such terrible things
Truly a dark comedy and done quite brilliantly as well! I'd like to give it a 6.5 to be more exact but just saw this and I'm not disappointed that I did. Another reviewer likened the comedy to slapstick but I wouldn't lower it to such a level. It's really just wonderfully absurd. And even when you see something coming, you'll marvel at how you can laugh at such things.
We can go into why it doesn't get a higher score from me, but... well, boy oh boy, what they were able to do in this film was just remarkable. You get the really messed up laughs, but they manage to twist the knife as well while pulling it out. What it leaves you with is... well, not in a pretty place.
A fine film; and the short dramatic bits will leave a stinging taste in your mouth while you leave the theater with a smile on your face.
We need more movies like this.
