American History X (1998)
Excellent. A film worthy to be in one's collection
The movie is brilliantly acted. It¡¦s about introspection and enlightenment with regards to racism. Many moving parts which are rare in other films.
******** spoiler *******
Such a moving part, my favourite, is near the end, when he gets out of the shower and looks at himself in the mirror. Coming up to this scene, shows clips of him as a child, playing at the beach, staring in awe at flying seagulls ³ to signify that his mind is now longer clouded with filth; while the shower complements this to symbolize it washing away.
Then he looks in the mirror, you can see the moment of truth; an enlightenment, which the expression on his face speaks 1000 words.
El segundo nombre (2002)
Analysis of realism
The movie was good yes, with some surprising mysteries. However, the ending not only unravels various mysteries, it unravels the plot of the movie to stupidity.
Anyone that knows their bible (well) will realize that this "cult" breaks numerous Commandments. -Thou shalt not lie -Thou shalt not bear false witness -Thou shalt not kill
Their actions make the whole cult a contradiction to religion (ie. trying to earn God's favor by condemning themselves)...
Plain stupid.
Hana-bi (1997)
Masterpiece
`Fireworks' is quite compelling. It is a hauntingly beautiful movie, full of Japanese aesthetics.
Its has a major philosophical viewpoint, specifically that of solitude. The extreme violence should not be viewed as "shocker" or a "thing-in-itself". Kitano plays a solitary, noble type of man, something not easily portrayed in cinema, who uses violence to command those who get in his way.
This film is defiantly not for the average gregarious viewer; they cannot comprehend solitude, and the fact that what charms and interests higher natures, and more refined fastidious tastes (men of nobility), seem absolutely "uninteresting" to the average viewer.
Secretary (2002)
A Triumphant Display of Passion
This movie is all about passion; achieved through sadomasochistic means.
The movie is presented in a self-empowering way, which is best premise any movie can possibly have; every philosopher knows that anything done without a strong will is but mediocre.
Now about the movie. Realize that everything is ironic. None of this would fly if it was not for the fact that Lee Holloway was a mental patient; one who suffered from depression. The "Secretary" light in front of the building signifies that E. Edward Grey goes through Secretaries like flipping TV channels.
To get the message of the movie, you must realize that he NEVER intended on finding the right woman; he even considers himself a sick man.
The most powerful message is the contrasting of relationships. We see Lee having a PASSIONATE fetish relationship with her boss, and then Lee having a BORING, lifeless relationship with her "boyfriend".
Today, in real life, there are all too many such lifeless relationships between couples, hence divorce.
Rarely have I seen such passion portrayed in cinema, let alone real life.
Two people are shown experiencing true love. Both from a "mentally unhealthy" background
