Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
A surprisingly accurate adaptation.
I'm sick of adaptations of cartoons, anime, and comics that "reinterpret" the source material and change things like adding new characters to put their own spin on it and in the process lose what made people love the original.
The creators of this show have NOT done that.
They've made a faithful adaptation that is following the story accurately and even including details like the cabbage guy and Iroh's jasmine tea.
Its very good in my opinion.
I'm disappointed in the loud minority that are complaining about it when this is probably the best adaptation we could hope for and has avoided so many pitfalls.
I'd love to see what they all thought of the previous adaptation!
The Batman (2022)
Hit and miss
Parts I like parts I don't like. Robert works pretty well for Batman, less so for Bruce Wayne. He isn't the over powered Batman you often see but can hold his own usually. It seems to be portraying the detective side of Batman more which I like and it works well. However he gets the clues too late, figures out what's happening after it's already about to happen. There is zero point in figuring out that the sea wall will be blown 2 seconds before it is blown. If it's showcasing his mental powers more than his physical in the film then I'm OK with that, but he doesn't appear to have unusually good deductive reasoning skills. Even the riddler was surprised and disappointed that he hadn't gotten his clue yet.
Also the sea wall...
Having Gotham several feet below sea level is a bit ridiculous. It would have been far more plausible if the sea wall was there to protect against storm surges and unusually high tides and then the riddler timed the destruction of the wall for such an event.
Overall better than I expected but disappointed in some aspects.
Stargate Origins: Catherine (2018)
Nope
I'll be honest, I've only watched the trailer, and read lots of reviews... But if its going to rewrite history and completely trample over star gate cannon then it's a big no from me. Plus it doesn't even look well done. I get that it was a low budget web series but I can't understand why they would be granted the right to use the stargate name on something that is such low quality. I'm not against low budget web series generally, for example the Cobra Kai series when it was on youtube carried on Karate kid brilliantly. It was respectful of the source material, well acted, well written and had an engaging new story to tell.
This Stargate origins appears to have none of those things.
Detectorists (2014)
My favourite TV series of all time.
I can't capture in words the essence of this show, but it just makes me happy. It's absolutely brilliant for its simplicity, it's cast of unforgettable characters and it's genuine, true to life story.
Elinor Wonders Why (2020)
From the makers of my favourite Physics podcast!
I've long wished that Daniel and Jorge would do something for kids and they have! My 4 year old loves it, I love the art style and the fact I know it's something safe that he can watch and learn to question to world around him as well.
