20 Days in Mariupol (2023)
Harrowing from first shot to the last
Absolutely harrowing, from first shot to the last. The world is so, so bleak. Every once in a while we get some faint hope that we will advance, that we will learn lessons from the past, that we will not choose war...and then comes a murderous psychopath like Putin to plunge millions into despair and darkness.
May the world never forget the evil that Russia has inflicted.
Films like this serve a crucial purpose and documenting what is happening so that people know now and do not forget in the future. It needs to be played over and over again in Red Square. Russia's name needs to be blacked out from the world state.
Gojira -1.0 (2023)
Incredibly moving, poignant, and epic.
One of the best films of the last few years. An absolute masterpiece combining a compelling human drama, a visual spectacle that doesn't take a single step back to even the most expensive blockbusters...and a story with incredibly deep meaning.
It honestly puts Hollywood Godzilla movies to shame. It's like the difference between a real life classical orchestra and some blown out phone jingle. The same in title only, but Hollywood movies completely miss the point or don't care what Godzilla represents.
Poignant, touching, memorable, and at times jaw-dropping. An easy 9 or even a 10/10, this is filmmaking at its finest.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
Spectacular and fantastic!
I was VERY worried about this film going in for the reasons many have mentioned, as Indiana Jones is pretty much my favourite film series...but they got everything right. It is hard for me to imagine how anyone could love Indy Jones and not love this movie. It was in part dark and gritty, in part sad, but on the other hand full of discovery, thrill, and adventure, solid characters, the familiar wonderful music, amazing locations, action scenes that were way better than what I was expecting, and just everything you can love about this series. It was exactly what I longed for, and a perfect ending for my favourite film character of all time, given his age.
The Last Crusade remains my favourite in the series, but Dial of Destiny more than holds its ground with the other films, which is saying a lot.
Shrinking (2023)
Cannot see anything good about this
I watched the first 2 episodws, but see no reason to continue watching. Nothing is really working for me. The comedy is incredibly flat, the dialog the same...I suppose it's supposed to be quirky? It's just 1 note with a lot of swearing to make up for not having anything interesting to say.
The premise for the drama aspect is good, but handled so flippantly and so little gravitas that you know is going to be a waste.
There are worse shows out there and the actors have charisma at least, but I just fail to see what people are enjoying so much about this. It's about as mediocre production as you can possibly get.
American Woman (2018)
Incredibly unlikable characters
While the acting performance by Miller is phenomenal...almost everything else about the movie could not be more of a waste. The protagonist that Miller plays is not simply 'flawed,' she is as unlikeable as anyone can be, but the film doesn't even seem to realize that. What is more, almost none of the plot is actually focused on the main mystery that the story advertises, in fact it is hardly touched at all. Instead, almost the entirety of the runtime is focused on screaming matches between a family. Other than the acting, just nothing much of value in this film, nothing to really enjoy or connect with.
Enola Holmes 2 (2022)
Awkward socio-political cringe
Horrific mess of a film from top to bottom. Is it even a film if the artistic vision is non-existent and absolutely everything is political messaging shoved down your throat with 0 subteltly. Very hard to take anything seriously when every plot point and character change is made for the purpose of "winning" social debate battles.
It is a shame because the actors are talented and could do a great job in an actual film rather than a forced cringe manifesto.
The first film wad decently entertaining, but here they just completely dropped the ball. I will not be watching the 3rd. Whoever made the decisions for this movie failed massively.
Black Adam (2022)
10/10. BADASS! This is what fans want!
10/10. BADASS! Absolutely brutal, no-holds-barred, magnificent superhero film. When is the last time you heard that? By a clear margin the best superhero film in many years, with the Rock bringing a truckload of intensity and presence to the character, a great story from the point of view of the anti-hero that is not often told, and truly entertaining supporting characters. This is what fans want to see, this is how these movies should be made. And an absolute epic showdown incoming that is already building excitement.
No one should have the slightest interest what the 'critics' have to say - very rarely do they write reviews focused on the actual content anymore. They are the antithesis of what art and movie-making represents - and they are gloriously being drowned out by this fantastic film. Thank you Rocky!
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
MCU Sex in the City cringe
Extremely poor show, MCU goes Sex in the City and bashes its own fanbase for calling them out on it. It tried to be silly and fun, but all it ended up being was obnoxious. Marvel has great female characters - from Wanda to Natasha, from Captain to Ms Marvel - but what did we learn about She Hulk other than that she would rather be a character on those vapid romance shows. I really hope such a fantsastic character like Daredevil isn't tarnished by this.
Marvel needs to focus on its core values and factors that earned its audience. This kind if low quality effort would have tanked it in earlier days.
Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994)
Fantastic movie based on a fantastic book
Now this is how you do an adaptation that while still has changes from the book, preserves the central spirit of it without compromising on the core tenants of the creator's vision. Beautiful, haunting, mesmerising, this is the Vampire Chronicles in its greatest glory. The 2022 tv show is cheap flavor of the month in comparison. I do not know if we will ever see another good adaptation of the VC, but if we do, I truly hope it respects the vision of Anne like this movie did. Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst more than live up to the iconic characters they portray, and more than likely will never be surpassed.
Interview with the Vampire (2022)
Misses what was unique and interesting about Anne Rice's books
It misses what was unique and interesting about Anne Rice's books. People can debate about what change is good or bad, but when it fundamentally circumvents the core vampire mythos that the author established, why do you call it Anne Rice's ? Why? It does not honour her work, and in fact separates people potentially from discovering her work. They might think they've seen the TV show, good enough, no need to read the books. Which will be an incredible shame. Anne deserves better. So does her son, Christopher Rice.
People can like this if they wish, but all viewers must know there is something way better in the books.
