The Killer Inside Me (2010)
Grotesque, vulgar, unconscionable (contains spoilers)
I have to say that while this movie was intriguing enough to make me want to see the anti-climatic ending, I totally object to romanticizing violence and serial killing. Also, there were places where my intelligence was seriously insulted. Such as the ending where the key players walk into a house that has been doused in gasoline or kerosene and nobody smells it. I am getting all the details on this vulgar movie, so I can be more careful to watch anything that this director has anything to do with. I have lost all respect for everyone in the cast to be involved with a movie with such a deplorable theme. I totally object to the scenes of brutality toward women. I totally object to the visual portrayal of a young woman (of color?) being beaten to a pulp--while Amy Stanton (Kate Hudson's) character gets off pretty easy and doesn't get banged up. I object to the whole idea of period pieces where there is not one single person of color in the peripheral cast. It is difficult to know if Jessica Alba's character is portrayed as a person of color or not. It is time that we as a society say, "Enough!". No more movies like this! BTW: in case you watch this grotesque movie and didn't figure it out--it was Lou who molested the 5 year old boy--did he kill his own brother? Who the h-ll cares! I understand the movie is based on a novel that I will never read.
Crank (2006)
A Disappointing and Vulgar Movie
There is no way that I could support the themes that were portrayed in this movie. First of all, I take offense to Chev saying, fairly early in the movie, that "it's time to kick some black ass!" This is a racist comment (coming from him) and I do not appreciate it. I also do not appreciate any portrayal of the threat of violence in a hospital. I work in a hospital and we do not need to portray these types of scenarios on film. We do not want to give the crazies ideas. I also do not appreciate the vulgarity of portraying a sex scene in public. That is when I turned this "piece of trash" movie off. I had seen Jason Stratham in the "Transporter" brand and mistakenly thought Crank might be similar. Boy, was I wrong. This movie was a waste of time--and although I ordered the second movie--I will not be watching it. Sometimes you just have to take a stand. IMO: this is one of those times. I should have turned the movie off when he made the comment about "kick some black ass". I thought though--that maybe that's the worst of it and the rest will be okay. When I turned the movie off--I noticed that all of the bad guys were people of color (black, Chinese, Hispanic or Puerto Rican. So, I have to conclude that either Jason and/or his director and production team are a bunch of in-bred, racist, webbed feet bigots. And that is my take on this "piece of trash" film. Thanks for letting me share.
It's Complicated (2009)
No Social Ideal to Aspire To...
I could not rate this movie more than a seven b/c of the objectionable themes it represented. Also, this is supposed to be a contemporary film and the only person of color was a waiter at the anniversary party at the beginning of the movie. As a consumer of movies, I find this highly problematic. We need to see different cultures and races interacting to have an ideal to aspire to. Meryl's character didn't even have anyone of color working at her business. I mean really--Nancy Meyer--what is your problem? Are you a racist? I see you were born in 1949--so, I think perhaps you are. I will not be watching this movie again and will discourage others from watching it when the opportunity presents itself.
Nothing Is Private (2007)
Not worth your time
I am philosophically opposed to the molestation of teen-age girls and so find it very troublesome that such things are portrayed in this movie. I cannot believe that a co-worker recommended this movie! I could not finish watching it. This movie was made in 2007, I believe and is not up to the standards of what I have come to expect from a movie. I do not expect to see teenagers engaging in sex or near sex and the like. This is almost as bad as "Pretty Baby" of the late 70s. This movie is just really not my cup of tea. I am not accustomed to a plot line with teenagers that revolves entirely around sex. Who would have thought that a movie about a teenage girl would be like this? I also think this movie is very disrespectful to Arabs who cherish their women and try to protect them sexually. I don't appreciate this movie and the message that it sends at all. It is definitely not worth your time.
Step Brothers (2008)
So Disappointed in Will and Billy
I had become accustomed to seeing Will in movies that were pretty clean. I was so disappointed in this movie! There was so much cursing and vulgarity that I simply could not finish watching it. I tried to watch it close to three times. Each time something occurred that was so abhorrent to me that I just had to quit watching it. The whole thing about the drum set was completely gross. The fact that viewers were shown some version of the male anatomy without warning was completely objectionable. I do not know if I will ever trust Will Ferrell again. He truly let me down. As for John C. Reilly --to be so talented and waste it in a movie like this is so sad. I am also disappointed in Mary Steenburgen. This is definitely a "guy" movie. I do not know many women who would be interested in watching something that displays so much immaturity. I find it outstanding that someone would really consider making a movie like this in our day and age. I do not know how it did at the box office--but I would suspect that it did not fare very well. I loved Will in Bewitched and I fully expected him to be funny like that in this movie. Again, I wouldn't waste time watching this truly below average movie for any reason that I can think of right now.
Mission: Impossible III (2006)
Thanks for the Ideal
I really appreciate that the producer, director, and Tom Cruise had the courage to show people of many apparent different ethnicities conclaving at Ethan's home for his engagement party. How can we ever expect society to reflect that which is never put forth as an ideal? I also appreciate that everyone on the team represented a different culture. Not only was the movie wonderful(although MI II is my favorite), It suggests an ideal that all races can work and live together in social harmony. Way to go!
I don't know that I appreciate the other symbolism--for instance, the allusion that there are many people masquerading as priests--Hmm, a little touchy but basically a harmless depiction. You know, audiences aren't as naive as they once were. And although all of us accept a certain amount of unreality (after all it is Mission "Impossible")as part and parcel of the MI mystique--it would have been nice if a medical consultant had been enlisted to make the part about defibrillation more believable. I think the average viewer probably bought it though.
