Up in the Air (2009)
This movie is fantastic! 8.5/10
This movie is really a fun time. George Clooney is great, and the young girl character from Cornell is a really big hoot. It's a good feel-good movie at times, and then other times it really makes you reexamine your life and your priorities. Above all though I just thought it was a good commentary on the modernized technological lives that most of us are all now leading. A little bit of a sex scene with Clooney if you're looking for a sexy-type film, but overall just a good comedy. I'd recommend this one for a slow night or a good time with friends. I can't give it a 10/10 for only a few reasons-mainly that I wish the movie tied up all the loose ends with some of the character's relationships (although that's not possible in real life most of the time, so I can't say why I assume it would be here), and because it felt a little long towards the end. But truly, this movie is hilarious most of the time, I'd strongly recommend it!
But I'm a Cheerleader (1999)
A Must-See for members of the LGBT community-funny and sweet
Essentially, this movie is a fun time and a good coming-out movie for those young members of the LGBT community, or older ones still trying to figure out their identity. The movie chronicles a group of LGBT teenagers sent to an ex-gay camp by their unacceptable parents. It's good for those struggling with their identity, or perhaps LGBT people just looking for a good laugh. I'm not sure if I can recommend this for the heterosexual community at large, mostly because I reiterate the comment about it being a little campy and at time it seems corny and more like a low-budget film if you're not interested in the subject matter. I found it a little awkward at times, especially with one sex scene of course. So a little corny and a little dorky, but overall the movie is feel-good, funny, and a great commentary for those of the LGBT community. I enjoyed it overall!
D.E.B.S. (2004)
This movie is HOT-HOT-HOT!! (tiny tiny spoiler included, not much though!)
Disclaimer: I'm a lesbian. But with that being said, this movie is HOT HOT HOT!!! The leads are all super sexy, and the relationship between two unbelievably gorgeous lesbians, is well, extremely sexy! In addition to the incredible eye-candy, the movie is of course, funny (it's a parody!) and a MUST-SEE for every lesbian. I say this movie is a must-see for lesbians, simply because of the film's sexy content and overall funny and feel-good message. It's probably one of the best lesbian films I've ever seen. Is it deep or profound or intellectual? Not really...unless you read really deeply into the script. It's just a great sexy romp through obviously fake crime-fighting "adventures" by teen girls, but it's really gorgeous to watch! Also for those in the LGBTQ community, I might mention that one of the characters is not sure if she's gay at the start of the film, (sorry, small spoiler, she IS of course), and so in that sense it is also helpful for those coming-out or questioning.
Puccini for Beginners (2006)
NOT a lesbian movie
I say this is not a true lesbian movie-why? Because I as a lesbian I don't think having a lesbian-male relationship is good enough! In addition, the relationship is non-monogamous! If you enjoy watching a movie about a woman who cheats on her lovers (both male and female) while simultaneously claiming to be a lesbian, this is for you! (NOTE the SARCASM). Sure, the movie is funny, but its not really when you realize it's just playing with people's lives. :( On top of that they lie to each other and the comedy does not balance that out! Overall cheeky but not a good movie and not worth it. The chemistry is okay but it's not great. Not recommended for lesbians either-its mainly female-male sex and relationships.
Saving Face (2004)
AMAZING comedy!!!
I second a previous comment below-this is basically an Asian/lesbian version of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and it is HILARIOUS!!! Not only that, but a great portrayal of love of all kinds, lesbian and more! I truly truly loved this film, and I would say that it is the best lesbian comedy of all time, if not the best lesbian movie of all time!! It is extremely well made, a funnier version of Imagine Me and You with a more realistic story line-lighthearted and fun almost all the way through with great chemistry in the leads, and a fantastic mother-daughter relationship-that tells it like it is! The display of Asian and female culture is also equally engaging, and I will definitely look forward to watching this movie again! FANTASTIC!!!! =)
Mango Kiss (2004)
A simple light hearted lesbian comedy
I thought this movie was a funny portrayal of lesbian sub-culture of role playing, ultimately ending with a good message about human nature. The lead characters are lovable and chemistry is pretty good! As a lesbian I thought it was a good film for a slow night but I'm not sure if others would enjoy it as much. I'd recommend it for a light evening! Quite funny and moves fast! Also I thought the lead "butch" was pretty cute, and it covers a lot of the stereotypical lesbian "roles" and "roleplaying" and the greater context of what can happen if we are not ourselves. Quality is good but the plot if a bit simple. Also it reminds me of the 80s. I also liked how accepting the mother was of the gay relationship-and that she could see how much the lead loved the other main girl.
