Les 7 vies de Léa (2022)
7th Heaven
Oh, this series is so good! The story is clever, funny, intense, gripping, all the way to the end. A murder mystery where the detective becomes the suspects. What a concept! Each actor has to play their role, but then also their role with Lea inside their body. The Pye actor notably nails this transition. The cinematography is brilliant, artistic, and adds to the whole cool music vibe. The historical details of France in 91 are spot on (minus that shirt) as verified by my French wife's reaction to stuff in the bedroom. This series goes way way up to the top of anything else I've seen, for so many reasons. Merci l'equipe de 7! I salute you.
Shaun the Sheep: The Flight Before Christmas (2021)
Laugh out loud funny
This one is good. Last year, "The Farmer's Llamas" was just full on chaos and destruction that eclipsed the humour. The llamas were downright nasty. It dragged on. They got it right this time. The story is way better. Poignant even in its depiction of love of technology over real love. And yes, that snowman moment...bravo! So good. Definitely worth watching no matter how old you are.
Have Gun - Will Travel: The Ballad of Oscar Wilde (1958)
historically accurate!
The interesting episode led us to do some fact checking. And yes, as stated in the show, Oscar Wilde's first stop on his American tour in 1882 was in San Francisco and he was paid $5000 for it. Apparently the ladies all carried sunflowers, which was wasn't shown in the episode, but would have been a nice touch. It was Wilde fever back then. He wore all those fancy silk clothes that no frontiersman would consider men's clothing. In real life, a bunch of cowboys tried to get him drunk and make fun of him, but the 200 pound Irishman could handle his liquor, which gained him respect in the far west. At the end of the show Paladin, always the cultured gentleman, and this time a time traveller, quotes from something Wilde historically hasn't written yet. "Sounds like something I'd write." Oh, you will," says Paladin. Very cool ending as Paladin chooses an evening with a lady over front row tickets.
We agree with Richard Shannon (Joe, the Adjutant Captain of General Waverly in Bing Crosby's White Christmas) that Paladin was showboating to get the job in the first place.
Once (2007)
once is more than enough
OK, I am ASTOUNDED by the attention and praise this movie got. They didn't have enough story content written so decided to fill up the time with full length songs, some repeated several times. (Subliminal message: buy the soundtrack, buy the soundtrack...) Oh, the girl and the guy are cute together; great chemistry. And frankly we should have explored that more...but no. Lets swear and cut to yet another song, that sounds very much like the last one. The editing was bad, the pace was flat, but like I said, you need more story to work with. There's no climax at all. So, the film is about songwriting and musicians? OK, lets compare this film with..."The Commitments." "Hard Days Night." "Shine." "Amadeus." Or even the more trite "You Light Up my Life". It pales in comparison. I guess you can film in Ireland, say 'foock' a lot and get a high rating on this site. (See quotes page). Oscar for best original song...sure. I'm OK with that. But the film script suffered from poor character development and plot progression.
