The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Deja vu all over again
I really liked the original Matrix movie. The idea was amazing and the execution stunning, even if not perfect. Matrix II was ok, III not so much. Resurrections is some kind of reboot-but-not-reboot of the first movie, with numerous references and scenes that are pretty closely "copied" from the original. Which would not be a problem if they were improved, or at least as good, but most give you that feeling of 'I've seen that before, but better'. Yes, a lot of scenes are pale and uninspired 'copies' of scenes already seen previously in the series. And around this, there is some convoluted, confused and unconvincing 'story' trying to explain why Neo has been resurrected and has to be waken up again. And get Trinity back. Which is about the full story. Lots of bland talking, uninspired 'kung fu' and unexciting shootouts. Most of the action is pretty boring and falls flat, villains talk a lot but don't have much personality. The whole thing feels like wasted time and potential. Sad.
Triple Frontier (2019)
Unbelievable
What can you say? Good cast, good visuals, a few good action scenes, it could have been a pretty good movie. I mean, it has almost everything. Except a good script. This one seems to have been written for an 8 years old audience. Dialogues are boring, supposedly professional soldiers who preparde the supposedly perfect heist are so blinded by greed they do all kinds of amateur mistakes, risking their collective lives multiple times just because they absolutely need to take with them a mountain of cash that wasn't even supposed to be here in the first time. Not to mention the numerous totally unrealistic plot points (like climbing over the Andes in a few days, without any equipment or food, carrying suitcases full of cash).
Hard to believe they put that much effort and money filming such a ridiculous story. And what the heck happened to Mark Boal? He has been a decent writer until that thing.
Walking Out (2017)
Starts ok, second part disappointing
It's a survival movie, you know from the beginning that something will go wrong, but at first you don't know what (if you haven't read spoilers before, I guess). I liked the first part, because there is a sense of suspense to it. The father looks a bit odd, has a kind of crazy light in the eye. There are those backflashes with the grandfather, who also looks strange (well, Bill Pullman...). There is the incident with the dead moose, implying there might be other "bad" hunters around. There is a tension buildup that I found interesting.
Then it happens, and you realize there is no mystery at all. It all crumbles down to a stupid accident due to incredibly stupid (and improbable) behavior from the kid. And all that follows is pretty unrealistic in my opinion. People complain about the slowness but that's not what disturbed me. It was rather what they did, how it all went on, and particularly how it was written, filmed and acted.
So I'd give it 7 stars for the first part, which was a good effort, and 5 stars for the second part, which could have been much better. Average: 6 stars. Bonus points for the scenery (i love snowy mountains).
