The Musketeers (2014)
Ammateur pilot
I waited this pilot with great anticipation, but in the end i was left disappointed. The atmosphere was good and the costumes looked nice enough and that is why i am gonna give this show another chance. BUT the plot was very badly written with nothing unexpected. The screenwriters should know that they have to face an audience that watches many years now series about lawyers, detectives and genius doctors. That means the audience can actually think a little deeper. It means it is hard for us to accept the fact that when someone walks around town committing crimes and naming himself Athos, no one in court is wondering ''why does he reveal his name?'' . I kept waiting for someone to ask it. They have an eye witness who confesses that the accused's clothes look the same with the criminal's and they all seem convinced. what about the face? what about the voice? is this how someone gets convicted and killed? Besides that, i still have some doubts about certain members of the cast and certain twists and i am not quite taken with D'artagnan himself. That could change in the next episodes though. All in all, not a great star...
Prisoners (2013)
An excellent movie that relies on good acting skills...
This is a movie about two families and their two little girls that vanish unexpectedly one afternoon. This story will make you experience one of every man's worst fears. Loosing your child. You will feel compassion, pain, quilt, doubt, conflict. The acting is amazing and i must admit, i had a long time to enjoy a movie purely for its acting instead of its visual effects or the complex story. The plot is simple but interesting, with a few twists that will keep you on edge until the end. Despite the length of the film, i did not get bored at any point. Both Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal do a terrific job and i can not imagine anyone better for their roles. The rest of the cast is evenly good and the actor playing the prime suspect fits perfectly the part. All in all, it is a movie that will make you feel sentiments to the extreme and that is quite rare nowadays. I recommend it undoubtedly!
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013)
Who chose those sugarcoated soundtracks???
The movie had potential, a very good cast and the proper atmosphere. The visual effects, and the costumes were great. BUT! half-way to the movie, and just as i am starting to warming up and the lead couple starts falling in love, the movie turns into cheesy teenager love story. The couple was kissing while a happy, Disney-like, song was playing and sprinklers were soaking them with water, and butterflies were flying all over the place. What was that? I thought i was watching a serious movie. The actors were pretty great, with the sad exception of Bane. He looked the part, but that was about it. I was also a little let down with the way the plot was explained. We didn't get a good explanation about valentine's actions. He wanted to do...what exactly??? And finally, many faces were not introduced in this movie, and a few important scenes (for me) were cut, which makes me wonder about the sequel. All in all, it was not bad but not really good either. It should explain some things better since not everyone has read the book and a movie cannot rely only in readers and i expected it darker and longer. Good scenes were missing. And above all i would like the sequel to be more mature and less teenage-like...
Orphan Black (2013)
Kudos to Tatiana Maslany...
I decided to write this review not only because i like the series very much, but also to praise the main actress, Tatiana Maslany...She does a terrific job playing all these different personalities. Not even once did i mistake the different clones and she gives life to every and each one of them. Even when the clones are together in many scenes, i really feel like i am watching completely different people that just happens to look exactly alike. The last time i enjoyed acting like that, with such variety, was with Jennifer Garner on Alias. As for the plot, i quite enjoy the mystery. There are some holes and questions in the storyline but maybe they will be explained later on the show. The rest of the casting is also quite good although, the villains could be a little more bad-asses and scary. All in all, i await season 2 with great anticipation...
Pretty Little Liars (2010)
The mystery is good but the characters' actions do not make sense...
When i started watching pretty little liars i was excited. I liked the show immediately because it combined many things. Mystery, good acting, romance, nice characters and high school drama which is always fun. But as the show progressed it became very unrealistic. The way the girls handle all this is very immature even for their age. And many times, the adults are being even more immature. Hanna's mother acts with panic in every single thing, waiting for her daughter to guide her and Aria's parents let their daughter date an older man, who was her professor and who now has a kid from an ex-girlfriend, while she is still in high school. And not only that but Aria puts them in their right place every time they try to do something about this. In the end they apologize to her and even try to help them! Hey parents! It is 2013 and if your 16 year old daughter wants to date an older man with a kid that used to be her teacher, she has every right. So keep quite and leave them, no, help them live their love. The parents of all the girls, specially Spenser's, are most of the time away, even after all the attacks that have happened to their little girls. In the final season most of the things the girls did, made me really wonder what is going on in their heads. They get in trouble for keeping secrets and their answer to this is...to keep more secrets. It began as a story that balanced between everyday life and the girls' problems. In season 3 it changed and became very dark, leaving you with a bad feeling in every episode's end. And i cannot help but comment on Aria's and Hanna's style in this last season. Looking like a provocative 30 year old woman that can't decide if she's going to work in a strip club or a bank is really not the appropriate look for a high school student. I guess that since they both were from the beginning the show's fashion icons, they had to keep it up and the show's stylist run out of ideas on how to keep them edgy and original. To conclude, this show is an excellent example of bad parenting but the mystery keeps me tuned. I will keep seeing it but with less enthusiasm than when i started it.
The Vampire Diaries (2009)
keeps going down from season to season
Vampire Diaries started good, became excellent and for the last couple of seasons it keeps getting from bad to worse. One of the things i like about series, is that unlike any movie, in a TV show you have time to connect with the characters and feel that you know them. So when a production starts killing one by one every character you have come to learn and love, the show takes the downfall. And if 9 out of 10 of these characters are killed in order to help one single person (Elena) then it gets irritating. We get it, Elena is torn between the two brothers but does the whole town really has to die in order for Elena to live her romance? Everyone gets his life in danger in order to help Elena but if God forbid someone has his one plans (see Tyler's plan about Claus) the two brothers take matters into their one hands. I will continue to watch the show, specially for Damon since i like him very much and because i want to see how the story ends, but they have to bring some new faces on board cause everyone is dead or leaving for another show...
Hanna (2011)
deceived by the good reviews
If this movie has taught me anything, it is never to trust the good reviews... Although the film had a great cast, the plot was handled very poorly. Pity because it was an idea with potential. I got bored after the first 20 minutes...It is one of the movies that, the next day you cannot remember anything about the characters or the end because it is that forgettable. I understand that not every film can be amazing and that many films exist just to entertain. But when you a see a movie like this getting a score of 7/10, leaving behind many great movies then you can not help but wonder why. The actors were pretty decent but they were given nothing to deliver.
Inception (2010)
Not bad, but not as good as i thought either...
When you see a movie, you judge it for its music, direction, acting and many other things, but sometimes the best way to decide if a movie was worth it,is to ask yourself. Did i get bored at any point while watching it? And yes, for me there were many points in this movie that i found myself bored and uninterested. I found the plot very smart but not completed. There where many holes and we were left with many unanswered questions. They say that this happened to make us think but come on. I like a movie that triggers you to think outside the box but that's it. I am not gonna spend much time re-watching the same movie or thinking about the time paradoxes of a dream like i am studying it to pass an exam. If a movie leaves you with so many questions then the plot is just not very well executed. Apart from that, it had many good elements that with a few changes could have made this movie great. But in the end it didn't deliver the perfection we all expected.
Game of Thrones (2011)
Amazing atmosphere but in the end, something was missing for me...
I know that i am probably in the minority here, but i do not hold game of thrones in such a high esteem as the rest of the viewers. I have not read the books so my opinion only has to do with the show as a TV product. I find the acting, the soundtrack and the atmosphere of the series amazing. But in the end, i never find myself eager to watch the next episode for some reason. I love fantasy series and i devour series with action, battles and politics. I loved Spartacus and i didn't mind the nude and sex scenes. In game of thrones though i find many scenes too disturbing. I also find that i do not care for many characters so much as i should. The first season was for me the best. Every character was given enough time, for us to learn about him and his story...But in season 2 and 3 we only see every character for a few minutes and sometimes not in every episode. I know that this is the way it is supposed to be but it keeps me from getting invested in them. Everything involves so slowly for me that in the end when i have to choose an episode from any series to watch, game of throne is almost always my final choice despite being a superior production to most shows out there right now...
