Secret Obsession (2019)
Best Song, Haysbert team up
Hopefully this starts a series of movies, like Sharknado, where Brenda Song is attacked by a bumbling psycho stalker and Dennis Haysbert can use 70's TV detective strategies to help her out.
Spoilers for part two
Takes place in the 90's, where Song is married to Bill Pullman, playing another husband named Russell, who is killed by bad guy play by Patrick Bergen. Haysbert is undercover as a Cuban baseball player in Cleveland but finds time to help her.
Spoilers for part 3
Takes place in the early 2000's. Song is married to Zach Braff, playing her husband Russell, when they are attacked by baddie played by Russell Crowe. Detective Haysbert is under cover as the President of the United States but still finds time to help with his partner played by Kiefer Sutherland.
Parts 2&3 are still not on Netflix but hopefully coming soon.
Orphan: First Kill (2022)
Actually liked it
My wife and I try to go see every schlocky horror, thriller or supernatural flick that's out there. We actually saw all the Saw films in the theater and made it until the third Paranormal Activity. Didn't expect much from this one but there is a dark twist in the middle of the film that makes it much better. Good job by director William Brent Bell in making an interesting and surprising prequel that filled in a plot hole from the first film.
Isabelle Fuhrman is great in the title role. I cannot believe she was a young girl when the first movie was made. A brunette Julia Stiles is excellent as well.
Actually liked it as much as the first one. If you liked Orphan, you will enjoy this one. If you have the streaming service it is on, you don't even have to leave your house. My wife and I still enjoy the old fashioned trip to the cinema. Even though we go to theaters with reclining chairs and food service.
The Invitation (2022)
Could have been very good
Nathalie Emmanuel is too pretty and talented to not make a great movie one day. Thomas Doherty who is only 27 looks like a young Sean Connery ( if only they were looking for a new James Bond hmmm) They start off pretty well.
It has a mix of a Hammer Horror film and a Lifetime romance movie with a little Jordan Peele.
Not enough scares, although full of atmosphere. The two leads are good as are some of the supporting characters.
The last act of the movie falls very short. Especially when compared to 2019's Ready or Not which had a comparable storyline.
Could have been very good with a better climax.
Nope (2022)
If not for the two leads, this would be as bad as The Happening.
Great performances for Kaluuya and Palmer as siblings. There were some good elements in the story but then it ventured into the ridiculous and by the end the thrill is gone. I'll watch Get Out again for the 20th time and wait for Mr Peele's next one. Save this one for streaming.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part IV (2022)
Cringiest interrogation scene ever
I have seen 3rd grade teachers do a better job of questioning 10 year olds than this inquisitor. Forget about the nuns when I was in school. I do like how Obi wan is incrementally getting his mojo back.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Disappointed
As a big Batman fan and collector, I saw this movie in the summer when it came out and have just seen it again after having purchased it, but must say I am disappointed.
There are epic scenes, the actors are consistently excellent and the themes of heroism, sacrifice and family match well with the first two chapters of Nolan's trilogy. Unfortunately, the basic story is a mess.
Just cup your hands in front of your mouth and repeat Bane's speeches and see how ridiculous they sound. The Braveheart battle between the police ( who have spent 3 months locked in tunnels, but have fresh clean uniforms) and the mercenaries should have included 'Pow', "Bam' and 'Wam' flashes like the 60's series. The last battle scene even has a major mistake, where Talia is alternately shown as being alone and with a driver that ultimately disappears from the cab of the truck carrying the nuclear device.
Like I said, I am a big fan of Batman and have loved all of Nolan's previous work, but the movie let me down for the above and many more reasons. Would recommend only to Batman fanatics like me.
