Strays (2023)
Not your usual dog movie
As a person sharing my house with two of their kind, when I saw the movie poster with dogs, I was hesitant to watch it. Movies that portray dogs in the cover are mostly tear jerkers or are for children. Then I noticed the names Will Ferrel and Jamie Foxx. I decided to give it a shot. I was hooked from the start and was totally satisfied with the whole story.
To repeat myself, this is not a movie for children or a happy family evening watch for a few tears and good feelings. The script is apparently written by a person who has a lot of experience with dogs. Most of the jokes, you will not get unless you have or had a lot of experience with dogs as a member of your family rather than as a pet. After watching, I came back to read some reviews and I was appalled when I saw a review titled "Low reviews written by dougs". Then I was unable resist and write a review of my own.
Conclusion: You will most definitely love the movie if you have a buddy who has paws and are into absurd comedy. You will most definitely not understand a thing if you are a Doug. I normally would have rated a heavily biased 7 if I hadn't seen the Doug reviews. However, I am going to give it a ten in response to those.
Backtrack (2015)
Deserves a higher rating
I have just finished watching Backtrack. I didn't have high expectations, because the movie had 5.9 rating. I thought to myself "how bad can it be?"
First 20 minutes was the hardest part. I thought to myself "5.9 is too high for this slow depressing movie"
Then the mystery began to build, followed by the plot twist. I again thought to myself "5.9 is low for this movie"
This movie is mostly watchable for the plot twists and Adrien Brody. Jump scares are here and there every now and then. There is not much else about it. However, if you can make it past act I, it will be worth the time and effort.
If mystery/horror is your favorite genre, then it is a must see for you. If not, I doubt you would regret investing 90 minutes of your life into this movie.
PS: I recommend refraining from wathcing the trailer.
Manhunt (2017)
Mediocre show
I was quite optimistic when I heard about this show. I was expecting something like Fargo or True Detective. However, unlike these other series, the writing is not as meticulous. Characters are too flat, plot is ridiculously forced at times. The use of cliches are so cringe at times.
With regarding to acting, Paul Bettany stands out as the bad the guy. However, the good guy, Sam Worthington portrays the character in such a way that I can't remember how many times I thought to myself "really?". He is supposed to be this likeable smart guy solving the case that seems to be unsolvable, by introducing a fresh approach; what Worthington gives us is an annoying over-excited teenager.
In conclusion, while I hoped to watch something like a "Mindhunter", I ended up watching a slightly better version of CSI / Monk.
Los renglones torcidos de Dios (2022)
I wasn't disappointed, I doubt you will be either
I don't exactly know how to describe my feelings toward this movie. I did read a comment about the final being disappointing/dissatisfying, but I respectfully disagree with that review.
From my perspective, this movie is well-written, well-acted, well-edited, and well-directed. If you have seen and liked the movie "nightmare alley", I bet you will love this one too.
I cannot deny there are a few checkpoints in the plotline where the writing pushes the limits of logic... Nonetheless, this piece of art utterly deserves the time it demands.
My two cents: do not read reviews with spoilers, and do not watch the trailer; just watch the product.
Solid 8 stars.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Bad news
I doubt there will be a second season for this show. The idea is simple, to make some cash out of a franchise with a huge fan base ready and willing. However, the production is, well, so amateurish. They could have at least hired a few skilled writers to make the show interesting and watchable. There are many characters but not a single one that you can relate to or root for. Furthermore what characters do or what happens to them is so irrelevant, disorganized and uninteresting, making the show extremely difficult to watch. Then, there is the issue of dialogue. The dialogue at times is so cringe that it might make your ears bleed. I won't even bother with the cast because of Elrond. With regard to Galadriel and her quest, the director attempts to create a sense of danger for her action scenes, but the plot armor for her prevents that from happening.
I wasn't expecting much already. Though, I must confess that I was deeply surprised after watching the first two episodes. Pity, this could have been a great hit due to the size of the fan base, even without investing great amounts time and effort. But the show fails almost at every level. Except the music and sounds, hence the second star.
Prey (2022)
Really?
I am really amazed how people rate this movie with more than 5 stars.
There is not a single character that is likeable. A protagonist covered in an extremely thick plot armor, the villain we all know, and several other characters who you understand obviously will have no function other than cannon fodder. Also, what's with all these recent movies being so dark? I almost fell asleep while watching.
Go watch wonder woman (the first one) again, at least it provides some scenery.
Wake Wood (2009)
Interesting idea, disappointing executiom
Wake Wood is based on an interesting concept. I will not go into details in order to prevent any spoilers in case some poor soul decides to waste 90 minutes on this.
Actors' performance is below par. Especially the little girl is so, well, pathetic. Plot advances very slowly and in a very boring manner. Characters are disturbingly dumb, especially in the third act.
A very generous 3 stars for the idea and the gore.
1883 (2021)
excellent start sinking into irrelevant character drama
I feel so frustrated to have witnessed something starting off so solid and promising transform into what I have watched.
The series has a very strong start with a promising story, and similarly strong characters to support it. What begins with a main plot about a group of pioneers trying to survive a very hard journey during colonial period, unfortunately, evolves into a painful to watch and boring to death character drama.
I cannot tell how low this work of art sinks into after episode 5 or 6 in regard of cheesiness, since the language English doesn't have them. Even the term "farcical" isn't enough to describe what this series evolve into after the fourth or fifth episode.
Rated it with 2 stars only because first 2 episodes are worth watching.
Are you curious about the details? Go read some reviews that contain spoilers. (as if there is anything that can be spoiled)
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)
I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a movie like this
I rate this movie with 10 flying stars. Nicolas Cage is hilarious. Pedro Pascal successfuly plays a very loveable character.
This film is not a serious one. On the contrary, one of the most unserious movies ever. There are cheesy parts, but they don't bother you, because you know the movie wants to be cheesy at those parts for the sake of humour.
A must watch.
X (2022)
totally deserves a praise despite its downs
I have read many negative reviews about this flick, and they all are written with good reason. I will not mention or argue all the downs, because there are much better and detailed reviews about them.
What's good about this movie? Why you should watch it?
It is very apparent that people who made this, invested good time and effort in making. This is not your regular 5 - 6 star horror flick that you have already watched tens of similars. Acting, directing, writing, editing... All way above nowadays' average "horror" movie.
Will it blow your mind away? No, it will not.
This isn't the kind of a movie that promises more than what it can deliver, but the kind that delivers exactly what it promises. What you will think of the movie after watching it will mostly depend on your expectations. Expect less, the more satisfied you will be. Expect more, the more disappointed you will be.
Proceed at your own risk.
Totally recommended for the fans of the genre.
Eight for Silver (2021)
Could have been much better
This was not an easy watch. The movie starts up very interestingly. Then the pace falls down to almost sleep level. Add to that the annoyingly dark and hard to understand scenes that remind the GoT episode "the long night". The story is interesting enough, but told very slowly. Acting is satisfactory. Worth a watch.
The Cellar (2022)
waste of time
I have watched countless bad films in this genre. So I am not surprised or disappointed with this one. The script is boring and even absurd at times. Acting by Elisha Cuthbert is the sole reson of two stars, the rest of the acting is annoyingly bad. Characterization or character development is non-existent.
I will not comment on the high rating reviews. If you are not familiar with such reviews by now, you do deserve to watch this one.
Watch only if you have nothing better to do, or have a hobby of wasting your life watching crap movies.
Censor (2021)
will be one of your best regrets
If you are into the mystery/thriller genre, I definitely recommend this one.
Well, there are many negative reviews about this flick, and most of them are justified... However, I strongly recommend that you ignore them and reach your own verdict after watching.
The movie has a solid start. Also an -almost solid- second act. Unlike many of the recent movies in the genre, an interesting plot, characterization, atmosphere - many things you look for but can't find in recent flicks - are present. However, (and unfortunately) in the last 10-15 minutes, most of the the things "good" about this movie, gets thrown out of the window.
I guess the makers of the movie and the producers had a falling out at some point, and the third act had had to be re-rewritten and rushed to what I have watched.
Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)
A movie "for fans only"
I expect a lot of negative reviews for this movie. Trust me when I say, there's a whole lot to run this movie down about. I am sure you will run into many negative reviews where you can read about all the things that I didn't like about the production.
However and nonetheless, as emphasized in the title, this is movie for fans only. I gave it 10 stars, only because I grew up as a fan of the first two films.
I am certain the modern day audience will hate and rate 1 star this movie. If I were one, I would too.
Conclusion: If you are unfamiliar to Bill&Ted universe, just go watch something else. Thanks to all those who invested time and effort in the project. It was a great ride to the good old times.
Hurok (2016)
Above expectations
If you like the genre, I am sure this movie will not fail you. I am big fan of movies like coherence, triangle, predestination, interstellar, so I liked the movie. Is it the best of its kind? No. There are moments when you ask yourself why does the protagonist is doing some of the things he does. However, overall this is a totally watchable movie.
Sweet Country (2017)
Slow paced, predictable but strong and solid movie
I am not surprised to see there are people who didn't like this movie. My best guess is they are offended to witness the acts of their forefathers.
Yes, the movie has a very low pace, sometimes annoyingly slow even. Yes, the plot is quite predictable.
However, unlike many other "movies" of recent, it actually has a plot. It doesn't have characters that do stupidest things for no reason at all. Acting is not of the best I have ever seen, nonetheless, it is positively above average. In fact, there is almost nothing that bothers me with this movie. It is very obvious that the makers of the movie did work hard and did a good job with the story telling, the characters and editing etc.
The story is quite obvious in the trailer: the notion of civilized western justice vs the uncivilized.
Game Night (2018)
Rise and fall of IMDB ratings
Seriously? This film has 7+ ratings??? Acting, dialogue, editing, plot, almost everything about this movie was more than disappointing. An 8 year old who watched the movie horrible bosses could easily figure out the next joke or scene.
I am not even going to bother mentioning the plot holes, because the word to describe how big they are hasn't been invented yet.
The best thing about this movie is its trailer. It has mystery, comedy and adventure elements in it. Do yourself a favor and go to bed after watching the trailer.
Black Panther (2018)
A series of uninteresting events
If you like a movie with no real characters, full of stereotypes from the boring 90s movies, a dull plot full of cliches, a very uninteresting story told in a most boring way, kindergarden level acting, then look no further. I won't bother going into details. There are already many long and detailed reviews out there explaining why and how everything about this movie sucks big time.
I thought Ant-Man (speaking of which has an imdb rating of 7.3-?!?!) to be the worst movie in Marvel Universe but they managed to prove me wrong and outdo themselves. Kudos Marvel dudes.
I give 2 stars for the sake of the CGI guys who apparently spent the most time and effort for this movie.
Last note goes to IMDB ratings. Marvel recently is not only successful in creating movies almost as bad as DC, but also in destroying IMDB ratings' credibility. 7+??? Guy Ritchie's King Arthur has 6.8, which also is overrated, is much more of a movie compared to this piece of junk.
Thank you for inspiring me to write my first ever review.
