Kanasembo kudureyaneri (2010)
Kanasembo Kudureyaneri is a sincere movie
A story has a beginning, middle and an end, but it's not necessary that they be in the same order.
Kanasembo Kudureyaneri (Riding the Stallion of a Dream) is a Kannada language movie written and Directed by Meastro Girish Kasaravalli. And it is based on Amaresh Nugadoni's short story "Savaari" Its a film that deals with the life of a terribly poor couple, Irya and Rudri. While Rudri works at a farm, Irya is a professional grave digger and waits for someone in the village to die, so that he gets to do some work.
The film applies a back and forth narrative to tell the story of gravedigger Irya and his belief in Siddhas, nomads whose arrival is considered auspicious. It is believed that if the death of a person coincides with the arrival of a Siddha, the soul is sure to go to heaven.
Irya and his wife are made known of their arrival through dreams. In fact for Irya, if a Siddha appears in his dream, it denotes a death in the village. However, once despite dreaming of a Siddha, Irya is told that there is no death in the village. He goes to the house of an ailing village elder, anticipating his death, but is sent back by the house caretaker saying all is well.
As if this is not enough, a Siddha not arriving in the village despite his wife having dreamt of his arrival, crushes Irya's faith in Siddhas, whom he believes are his protectors. Is Irya just an easy prey to superstitions, or are scheming villagers exploiting his dreams for their own good? The film beautifully exposes the materialistic attitude of people. It leaves you wondering whether destroying one's beliefs is the only way to progress; whether there are chances of beliefs being mistaken for superstitions just because the ones who hold these beliefs are not part of the mainstream.
Kasarvalli's use of non-linear narrative for the first time succeeds in building the audience's curiosity. V Manohar's music and Ramachandra Halikere's camera work complement the story.
The performances are the other highlight of the film. Kasarvalli gets credit for bringing out the serious actor in comedian Vyjanath Biradar, who excels as Irya. Umashree sinks into the role of Rudri. Sadhashiva Bramhavar as the caretaker also comes out with a stellar performance.
Am going with 9 out of 10, for its Great performances, thought provoking storyline and sincere screenplay.
Dhobi Ghat (2010)
Dhobi ghat is Boring and Confused
Dhobi ghat is a 2011 bollywood movie, directed by Kiran Rao. The film stars Aamir Khan, Prateik Babbar, Monica Dogra, and Kriti Malhotra.
Arun (Aamir Khan) is a lonely modern art painter. Shai (Monica Dogra) is an American banker who is on a visit to Mumbai. Munna (Prateik Babbar) is a washerboy also living near Arun and Yasmin (Kriti Malhotra). The movie is about these four characters from different class of society and how the lives of four characters are intertwined.
The film deals with the undelying causes and effects of Poverty and Unhygiene within India while making various comments on Muslims within Mumbai. For the first time in Bollywood, A background score based on Notes rather than sound. Thats the only best part in whole cinema. This film is shamelessly copied from Hollywood's Babel, Amores Perros, 21 Grams.
Prateik Babbar and Kriti Malhotra delivers some promising acting. Aamir Khan's acting is resembles to Sean Penn's role in 21 Grams. The film still has few plus points: which are Tushar Kanti Ray's Cinematography and Gustavo Santaolalla'Background score.
I am going with 4 out of 10 for Kiran Rao's Dhobi Ghat, as it is the most confused and boring film of 2011. If you are not engaged with any productive work, then go, watch it and scratch your head.
Inception (2010)
Original and deliciously complicated
Inception is a science fiction action film written and directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Leonardo DiCaprio in a lead role.
The film is about Dom Cobb(Di Caprio), a thief who has the power to enter into the dreams of others by thrusting himself into the subconscious of his targets, thus obtaining information that otherwise impossible to access. However, when an enemy(Saito) predicts Cobb's every move, Cobb and his team of specialists are forced to plant an idea in a target's subconscious. The title INCEPTION refers to planting an idea rather than stealing one.
Much of the film's first part is spent illustrating how Dom's job works: how he extracts dreams and ideas from people's heads, and what exactly the process involves. You're introduced to the concept of multiple levels and layers within the subconscious.
The team's target for inception is Robert Fischer Jr. (Cillian Murphy), son of Saito's late corporate rival Maurice Fischer (Pete Postlethwaite). The idea is a complex emotional suggestion that will ultimately lead Fischer to disband his father's empire. To achieve their goal, Cobb's team will have to pass down through several levels, each a dream within the last. Time slows down with each level, so that five minutes of real time would appear as an hour in the first dream, which feels like 10 hours in the next level, and so on.
The team boards a Boeing 747 transporting Fischer, drug him without his knowledge, and enter into a dream with him. They have help from Yusuf (Dileep Rao), the chemist who developed the compounds specific to the multi-level dream state they are attempting.
Everyone wakes up successively through all the levels of dream, alive and well. As per his deal with the powerful Saito, Cobb is given leeway to re-enter the United States, and is reunited with his children. The final shot shows his totem, spinning but beginning to wobble. The scene then cuts to black.
As the leader of the pack, the protagonist of this drama, Leonardo DiCaprio is first-rate. He brings genuine emotion to the scenes in which we see Cobb overwhelmed with love for his wife and children, and he is every bit as convincing in his action star avatar.Hans Zimmer's background score is electrifying.
I am going with 10 out of 10 for Chris Nolan's Inception. As It's the most original film I've seen in long time. Amazing writing and storytelling, leaves you exhausted, but in an amazing way.
How about this, grab your tickets, this time not with popcorn and Pepsi, but with Marijuana, and INCEPTION is your trance music.
Ghatashraddha (1977)
A Masterpiece
Ghatashradha (The Ritual) is Kannada language movie, directed by Legendary Girish Kasaravalli. Its based on Jnanapeeth award winner U.R.Ananthamurthy's short story.
The film was set in 1920s and depicts a rural village in Karnataka, where a young widow, the daughter of a village scholar who runs a local school, finds herself pregnant after being seduced by a teacher. While the girl remains unaware of the happenings within and around her, she is excommunicated by her father, who performs her funeral rites (Ghatashraddha), while she is still alive. A little boy through whose eyes the entire story is perceived goes back home, after the school is closed down following the incident.
This movie also shows a clear picture of caste division amongst Brahmins and untouchables in quite a few scenes.
The best part of the movie is, before the climax scene where the Shudra slave says to the main priest "He had saved his daughter (who got pregnant being a widow) even from the snakes, but could not save her from a Brahmin" The entire credit goes to Girish Kasaravalli for beautiful narration, and perfect direction. Meena(the girl) and Ajit(kid) acted brilliantly. Watch it for soul touching story and superb performance. Truly deserved an Oscar.
I am going with 9/10 for Girish Kasaravalli's Ghatashraddha.
Sherlock Holmes (2009)
Sherlock Holmes is well worth a trip to the theater
Sherlock Holmes is a 2009 film adaptation of Conan Doyle's fictional character of the same name. The film was directed by Guy Ritchie.Robert Downey, Jr, Jude Law respectively portray Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.
In 1891 London, Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey, Jr.) and Dr. John Watson (Jude Law) race to prevent a human sacrifice ritual conducted by Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong). Holmes and Watson stop the sacrifice just in time and neutralize Lord Blackwood.
Three days after Blackwood's execution, his tomb is found shattered, from the inside out, and an eyewitness reports seeing Blackwood walking away. Holmes and Watson find Blackwood's coffin contains the body of a red haired midget. Holmes follows clues from a pocket watch on the body to the midget's home, where they discover several chemistry experiments.
With Watson and Adler (Rachel McAdams), Holmes takes them to the sewers below Parliament where they find a machine that is operated by a remote trigger held by Blackwood that will release a cyanide derivative into the Parliament chambers. Holmes recounts that all of Blackwood's "mystical" acts (including faking his own death) were simply applications of science and trickery.
Adler explains about Professor Moriarty, and warns Holmes that Moriarty "is just as brilliant as he is, and infinitely more devious".
In the final scene, The police arrive to report a dead officer found near Blackwood's device, and Holmes deduces that fighting Blackwood was a diversion by Moriarty. Holmes accepts the case.
To talk about performances, Robert Downey Jr:He's great. Fun to watch, attractive, clever, he's the whole package. Bit old, but you will forget that with his tricks and charm.Jude law is also upto the mark and Rachel McAdams is soo cute. Dialogs are quick and superb. Background score is electrifying. The fight scenes, you will love them. Only bad thing is make-up.
This film is well worth a trip to the theater if you're looking for a fun ride that is easy to watch. It's not perfect but if you're looking to be entertained for a few hours without having to think or feel too much. I give 7.5 out of 10 for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes.
3 Idiots (2009)
All iz NOT WELL
3 Idiots is a Bollywood film directed by Rajkumar Hirani, it stars Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor,Boman Irani. Is loosely based on Chetan Bhagat's novel Five Point Someone.
And this time Rajkumar Hirani failed. Munnabhai series was much better than his 3 idiots. Nothing fresh, contents are outdated and its a shame to five point someone.
Film is about the story of Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhavan), Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi), and Rancho (Aamir Khan) are three engineering students who all share the same room in a hostel at one of the best colleges in India. Farhan and Raju are from modest backgrounds, Rancho is a wealthy genius who studies for joy(So weird). Threatened by Rancho's talent, ViruS(Boman irani) labels him an "idiot" and attempts on a number of occasions to destroy his friendship with Farhan and Raju. Meanwhile, Rancho falls in love with ViruS' daughter Pia. Farhan and Raju dare Rancho to tell Pia he loves her, and when they go to her house, Raju gets drunk and makes sure the mailbox says "ViruS" and peeing on it. ViruS sees Raju and they are caught in class, he tells Raju that either him or Rancho gets rusticated, unable to make a decision, Raju attempts suicide, only to be saved by Rancho, Farhan, and Pia. Finally, dramatically Farhan's dad lets him become a wild life photographer, and Raju gets a job.
The story is framed as a flashback from the present day, Farhan fakes a heart attack to abort a plane because he gets a call from Chatur(Silencer) saying Rancho has come. Raju leaves in a hurry without any pants getting the same call. All three of them search for Rancho. They come to a village and find out that Rancho was actually a gardener's son and when his father died, a rich man took him in. The real Rancho is Javed Jaffrey and their Rancho's real name is Chhote. When Rancho couldn't pass his exams, his father not wanting him to fail in life sent Chhotte as Rancho to get his son a degree and leave. Farhan and Raju interrupt Pia's wedding and take her along to find Rancho. They find he is a teacher. Also, chatur be more richer when he signs a deal with Phunsukh Wangdu, a world famous scientist. But everyone realizes that Rancho is actually Phunsukh Wangdu himself.
This movie offers nothing new, a typical bollywood film with no creativity, u will get irritated when Boman Irani speaks, also in Pia's sisters delivery scene. Engineering students with the help of a webcam and vacuum cleaner they take out kid from her stomach. What a disaster.
Only during first half of the movie you can enjoy, Raju Hirani's dialogs are excellent and Shantanu Moitra's music cool.
Performance wise, Madhavan and Kareena Kapoor did a justice to their role. Both Aamir and Sharman overacted. In every scene you can find Aamir khan crying. Aamir didn't even tried to deliver 5% of Lagaan or DCH, very badly imitated walking style of college boys.
I give 5 out of 10 for Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots.
Avatar (2009)
Outstanding,Mesmerizing,Hypnotising
I believe in James Cameron, way back from the Aliens to Titanic he delivered a sensation or a magic. And his new magnum Opus, AVATAR is most entertaining, thrilling cinematic experience of my lifetime. Its mesmerizing, and Cameron crafted it wonderfully.
The film focuses on an epic conflict on Pandora, Pandora is inhabited by an indigenous species called the Na'vi. Standing nine feet tall, with tails and sparkling blue skin, the Na'vi live in harmony with the natural world around them. The word Avatar is an ancient Indian word, with literal meaning of "the Lord Vishnu taking another form, to counter the evil forces". Here it refers to human scientists led by Dr. Grace(Sigourney Weaver) taking form of Na'vis with the help of Genetic engineering.Jake Sully(Sam Worthington), a marine, who replaces his brother on a mission to infiltrate the Na' vis on the planet of Pandora. During Jake's first assignment through the Pandora jungle, few wild creatures attacks him and becomes alone in that jungle, attempts to survive and steals the attention of Nytiri (Zoe Saldana) a Na'vi female. The Na'vi people decide to take Jake and teach him about their culture. As Jake learns the way of the Na'vi, he finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth and a newfound love for his adopted home and people. Believing that the Na'vi will never abandon their home, the humans attack and destroy the Hometree, forcing the Na'vi to flee. The Na'vi feel betrayed by Jake, ostracizing him from the tribe. Back at base, Jake and his compatriots are forcibly disconnected from their avatar interfaces and are detained for arguing against the destruction. Finally, with Neytiri's assistance, Jake assembles thousands of Na'vi from other tribes and lead them into battle with the increasingly violent human forces, in order to save their race and world, after the battle, the humans are forced to evacuate Pandora. To talk about the performance, all arrows from the Cameron's bow done an excellent job.Especially Nytiri, an electrifying performance, even Sam did an excellent job.I mean all are acted brilliantly. Visual effects is superb and hypnotizing
Avatar offers not only Space war but also a drizzling love story between Jake's Avatar and Nytiri. Every scene offers you a thrilling Taquila. I added Avatar in my favorites list. I give 10 rating for James Cameron's Avatar because i cannot give less than that.
