Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars (2004)
If there is any grand finale for any tv series it is The Peacekeeper Wars
After four seasons of almost perfect storytelling about Moya and her passangers especially weird zany drama of IASA astranout John Crichton , Farscape (due to a criminal act of cancellation from Sci Fi Channel) could not produce its fifth and final aeason but instead its fans got the next best thing : a three hour long grandoise lavishly produced miniseries as finale , Farscape The Peacekeeper Wars. First negatives : It is not perfect. A full 22 episode long story was summarised , narrated and concentrated to three hours and some of the make up is different than series as well as the story element like Scarran vulnerablity to pulse fire. But if you overlook them (actually minor details) you have the conclusion of a great character story arc of John Crichton , Aeryn Sun and their shipmate comrade in arms. The outcomes are far from ideal , there are losses and casaulties to offset the happy ending you earn. There are never easy choices. But I have to confess Brian Henson and Rockne O'Bannon made a great finale for their baby. It is almost criminal negligence that no one knows this magnificent franchise or it was not continued in any way (no comics do not count) but still we the loyal fans and audience are in debt of those producers , writers and actors. Thank you for sharing this journey with us.
Stargate: The Ark of Truth (2008)
Clearly , the producers of this so called "movie" did not know the difference between episodic tv format and movie making narrative
LOL , what was that ? I watched Stargate SG-1 tv show which was terrible itself but at least had a little entertainment value and hoped maybe these straight to DVD movies might have better quality to finalise the story like Farscape The Peacekeeper Wars. So I watched it and nope , total disappointment and same old low quality production values , stilted banal forced acting , script writing is standart from A to B and fight the obstacles in between to find the Deux ex Machina with Red Button to end all threat without any after effects , casaulties or consequences and in summary a story that adds zero character development that finalises Ori the Religious fanatics threat in most inoffensive , bland and nonsensical cheap way possible with Happy Ending for everyone but bad guys. The story structure is same with tv episodes of the show. The half of the cast seperates to deal with a threat that is unrelated with The Ark of Truth title. At the end everything is good , OK for victorious good guys of USAAF military who should have our gratitude or saving our planet and our galaxy effortlessly without our knowledge (of course they caused the threat to arise in first place but whatever) My theory is MGM and the producers and also the actors were finally got sick of telling same story narrative with different episodic story arcs over and over and over and finally created the plot device with same Scavenger Hunt quest that would end all story arcs of evil aliens with false religion story.
Farscape (1999)
Can anyone produce a better space opera/fantasy production ? I doubt it
Although Farscape had been in DVD archives of my son , I avoided it for a long time. I have seen a few scenes of it previously and seemed silly especially with puppets etc. Last month I finished whole series from beginning to end including Farscape : The Peacekeeper Wars miniseries. (which was made like a high budget Hollywood silver screen production as a grand epic finale) Now I am kicking myself for avoiding a piece of art unique and unmatched in space opera fantasy genre for so long.
Dark Matter (2015)
Please spare me from low quality low budget badly acted Canadian Sci-Fi
Science Fiction on televised media format coming from North America has one very serious problem. Almost %99 of its annual output comes from Vancouver studious due to budget issues. That means limited acting talent pool (usually young new photogenic actors who desperate try to collect their monthly paycheck on any production) , child like PC , family friendly rated , ripped or copied from previous productions in writing department. And since sci-fi fans especially in space opera genre are usually not most selective bunch they watch anything with a space ship , guns and sexy chicks....
Dark Matter is the latest example of this. Since 1990'ies straight to video era I have never seen such low quality in any sci-fi production. Acting is worst. Except Canadian action sci-fi regular Roger Cross none of the actors have any reasonable experiences in their profiles (a few are directly from Canada Has a Talent show). The sets , stunts , costumes and character conversations are so banal , unstylistic while trying to be cool or dramatic they became ridiculous while trying to be serious instead. Even worse plot story elements were blantly copied from previous far superior productions. Crew waking up in a derelict space ship with memory loss (Pandorum 2009) , lead virtuous protagonist beaten up by hot chick as soon as he woke up (Farscape , Stargate) , stilted android on ship managing systems (at least half a dozen space operas chiefly same blonde herrenvolk android stereotype from Battlestar Galactica) , crew have no idea about their previously set destination ( Stargate Universe) , becoming a rag tag team (Firefly). Characters were divided into cheap stereotypes : Angry , cynical guy who loves guns (he even has same jowl structure with Jayne character from Firefly) , girl with medical expertise (Doctor Doctor !) , hot fighter chick who knows rudimentary knowledge about ships systems , righteous protagonist (was he related with Shia LeBeuf. There was a resemblance) , calm quite martial arts expert , female Commander Data etc....List goes on. Cheapness of sets production quality , hacked plot and level of acting really reminds me Kevin Sorbo's disastrous Andromeda series.
Get space opera genre from clutches of Vancouver studios monopoly please....Their work on this genre is usually constantly repreated reheated writing , banal production values ans terrible quality. Otherwise space opera genre would meet same fate with Westerns : Extinction.
Stargate SG-1 (1997)
Cheap Star Trek Sit Com
If I could give zero star I would without hesitation. Seriously who watches this kind of stuff ? No budget , terrible production quality (because of low budget probably ) , no character development , existing characters are ridiculous one dimensional stereotypes of space heroes or cut out of military clichés known since existence of television with PG rating. Acting is incredibly stilted and banal as well. Most plots or story arcs were ripped from Star Trek franchise and they follow same format and resolution with simplified versions ! Probably to pull audience of that franchise. The words of "predictable" and "formulatic" must have been conceived to describe Stargate SG-1. From technobabble to false god aliens who could not hit a barn door with ray weapons to standart stand alone episodes from timetravel to parallel universes to body swap just to fill airtime. And stupid humor oh boy that awful humor. When Colonel O'Neill or his other sidekicks make a lame joke , slapstick remark or find themselves a hilarious situation I half expect a laughing track from background. At some point series became a self aware parody a mocking of sci-fi genre. Do not expect any quality drama , engaging story (essentially US Air Force always wins and saves Earth) or characterization from this one. This series is just for hopeless homebound sci-fi geeks.
The Avengers (2012)
A movie made by geek community for geeks
Anyone gave 5 to 10 stars for this absurdity who is past 18th birthday , not a comic book publisher Marvel Fanboy and does have a girlfriend please raise your hand.
No one ? Thought so. The movie is atrocious. There is a plot a plus compared Transformers movies but it is so simplistic and full of tropes , deux-ex-machinas ( I lost count how many times Loki's magic staff was used to explain everything and advance story from brain washing to destroy portal opening device ) , stereotypes , predictability and cheap juvenile PG-13 jokes it becomes a parody. I wonder that was the intention. Self mocking with movie concept , characters , genre etc. Because there is no way this movie goes unpredictable or might surprise you. Ending credits might have said "From producers of Scary Movie" or "Meet the Spartans" Final CGI explosion filled fight scene (another parallel to Transformers movies ) against alien invaders where no one was harmed due to rating was so messy with headache inducing 3D scenery you either had to get out of theater for fresh air or close your eyes and ears ( I did former ) The result is box office inflated animation due to marketing hype. Except CGI special effects overuse it has little cinematic quality. Actors try to make something out of their characters but child like character material gives them little chance on that.
Comic book fan boys. Please stop comparing your live action stuff with Oscar winning material. You display your ignorance and make yourselves ridiculous. Cinema does not revolve around you. I am glad that you got your live action clip but for the rest %99 of us living on this planet who do not know know or familiar with resource material The Avengers was badly edited , predictable (and sometimes cringe worthy) movie. And I am using "movie" term very lightly here.
