Rakhta Charitra 2 (2010)
Somewhere between average and good
There are many positives going for this movie. The story is true to its land, the acting is great, no commercial elements so on paper everything seems to be right.
But when you stretch a small story for more than 2 hours then it becomes a big bore. RGV could have easily put both the movie parts together in 1 piece and that would have made it a great watch.
Many scenes move in slow motion. The technique works at the start but then you see too many scenes following the pattern that it tires you, especially in the end.
I would still give this 7/10 since the movie tells an important story something which is still not very well understood by many.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001)
Terrible movie...unwatchable
It is not often that you find a grand movie with all the super stars plain unwatchable but K3G is one such movie. The reason is plain and simple: almost everything about this movie is fake.
The movie talks about loving your parents but throughout it is impossible not to feel that all emotions have been manufactured. There is a complete lack of realism and people seem to cry at every available opportunity.
The scene where all children at school (including British) sing the Indian national anthem is one of the worst scenes in a very long time. It was so cheap and you feel like asking what is going on?
The movie is just all gloss. There is no substance or soul.
Dasavatharam (2008)
Average movie..wasted effort
I am a huge fan of Kamal Hassan ever since I was a kid. I have seen enough of his movies to tell that he is a far more accomplished actor and a better director, script writer than what we see in Dasavatharam.
Kamal has wasted so much effort in making this mega movie worth very little in the end. If not for effective marketing this movie would have sunk without a trace.
There are some extremely difficult scenes taken really well. But as the saying goes you must never loose sight of the forest for the trees. The story is the ultimate thing in any movie and no other gimmick can make up for it.
There are many twists and turns in the story with no real purpose. Its fair to say that the USP of the movie is also its greatest weakness...most of the 10 roles played by Kamal are needless.
I would still give it a 7/10 for the sheer effort that has gone into making this movie.
Billa (2007)
Too much style
The movie has too many flaws and just too much style for style's sake. The director focus on presentation aspects seems to have had its effect on the story and plot.
Ajith looks good but thats hardly enough for a good action movie. Nayanthara attempts a macho look which does suit her at times but Namitha is an embarrassment.
There are a few positives though, a few daring stunts were well done and the costumes have been carefully chosen. But the movie fails to build on its solid base. This could have been a modern version of a compelling classic but for Billa's fans this was a disappointment.
Kaakha Kaakha (2003)
Slick action movie...
Indian cinema typifies cops of two broad categories: they are either the honest type or the bad guys. The honest guys always shout at the top of their voice and fight the system while the bad cops enjoy for most part but suffer at the end.
This movie at least breaks this usual formula and gives a refreshing view of cops and their lives. The direction takes an inside look at the life of a young ambitious cop who. The music is interesting and the editing is a trend setter as far as Indian cinema goes.
The movie is slow at times and the dilemma which Anbu faces when it comes to Maya is overplayed at times. But I would still give this one 9/10 simply because it has many firsts to its credit.
