Good entertainer
7 May 2020
It is a nice comedy entertainer. I didn't feel bored anytime during the movie. The movie also gives a really noteworthy message, one which is very much relevant now. Also, the director is brave in that he doesn't shun away from topics that are seldom discussed.

A really feel-good movie
16 February 2015
The last time, Rajesh Pillai enchanted me with his captivating thriller Traffic; so I was eagerly awaiting for his next film...He was the only reason I watched this movie, and I do not regret that decision; this time he has come back with an entirely different movie..The story of the development of a shy girl into a grown woman. A subject I believe that no other Malayalam movie has touched upon so far. And he has taken that subject into his hand, a good script that is all; even though he has taken that script also into his heart and gave it his vision; his unique vision that is evident throughout this movie. If ever there is a director's movie, Mili is that. Every frame exudes the creativity of a genius. He turned what could have been an overly melodramatic film (I hate melodrama) in many a directors' hands into one of the best Malayalam movies of 2015.

The only comparable aspect to Rajesh Pillai in this movie is Amala Paul's performance as the title character Mili. She has done more than justice to her role. After seeing her performance in Indian Pranayakatha, this role again speaks volumes of her acting. She is a very good actress. The director really got the subtle emotions he wanted from his lead role. Brilliant Amala Paul...keep it up.

Another thing to say is about the really good music and the beautiful lyrics...I should say the music formed the spine of the movie.

The performance of the supporting cast was superb as well. I can identify no fault with this movie.. This is a confidence-inspiring feel-good movie. Go and watch it.

Good movie...a bold attempt...but??
8 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I saw 22 Female Kottayam yesterday from Changanachery Apsara Theatre....First of all, a thumbs up to the theatre management..After the success of Second Show and Masters, I think they gained some money such as they have been able to modify the seats and interior.....Now it has become a good theatre.Coming to the movie, it is a good movie worth watchable. I must appreciate the bold attempt by the team not to restrain dialogues or scenes involving sexual matters. The theme of the movie is good. A woman going for revenge against men who cheated her and abused her sexually. The way it is treated is also good. Good direction by Aashiq Abu. The visualisation of the story is superb. Eye catching visuals actually. I have not seen Salt and Pepper yet. But by this movie, I regard him as one of the future bests.

The best thing about the movie, I think, is Fahad Fazil. He is absolutely amazing. Believe me, he is going to be one of the best actors in Malayalam movie industry. He has portrayed a complex character with such ease and fine precision. The transformation from a handsome chocolate boy to a heartless villain is simply amazing. The main thing to say here is that he has not overacted a little bit. He did what was required by the screenplay. That is a very difficult thing to do. This guy has got talent

Having said all these good things, I really do not appreciate the movie as some other people have reviewed it. I think it is a good movie, but not that very good. It lacks something somewhere. My main argument is that the movie lacks an inherent logic. It is like the team wanted to portray the power of women and some feminist thoughts all along the way, let it be in the expense of a good, solid storyline. I felt that especially during the climax scenes (when she wants Cyril to know what he has done wrong). That felt comical to me. No real depth in those scenes. Actually, who in the hell is going to forgive a person who surgically removed one's genital organs and who is still going to say that "Neeyanu pennu??" . (Although one can argue that Cyril was bluffing throughout the scene, but certainly not in this case ). It was all symbolic. A little too much feminism for the sake of feminism.

And another thing I felt went wrong was Reema Kallingal. I know most people praised her for her acting. I am not saying that she was bad. Actually overall she was good. In the latter half, when she is a smart and bold and deadly woman, she is very good. But that is in her comfort zone. That is what Reema Kallingal can do. We have seen the confident-self of her in Happy Husbands and all. That is who she really is. But what about the first part of the movie where she is a pretty naive girl??? I don't think she has handled it well, especially in the scenes after she was raped and she gets emotionally disturbed. There was way too much theatrical, melodramatic overacting (especially in the scene when she cries all over Fahad). I did find it irritating actually. (When Anne Augustine did it in Ordinary, everyone booed. What is the difference here?). The main flaw of the movie lies in the transformation part. The focus was not at all on Reema Kallingal. Just because of a jail sentence (where she actually had not much difficulties or did not have to endure that much torture), will one become a ruthless cold minded person over two or three months?? In Kill Bill (one of the movies from which it is inspired as the director himself quotes), Uma Thurman was already an assassin and she just came back with a vengeance. Here, just over time, she transforms (without much shown in the script). I couldn't accept it.

But another good thing here is the woman who portrayed the pregnant Subaida. She is an absolute class actress.

And finally do not get me wrong here. I liked the movie. It is a very good movie. But the reason I spoke too much negatives about the movie is that no one did it before. Everyone was in appreciation of the movie. So someone has to flip the coin, right?

It is a good movie, go and watch it, you won't be bored,

My rating is 7/10

The Avengers (2012)
6/10
Eye candy, and eye candy only
30 April 2012
The Avengers has been the trend for the past few days. Everybody had only good things to say about the movie, and so I decided to watch it. Well, it was not that good, not for me at least.

The film is a visual extravaganza, competing on the number of villains and visual graphics scene by scene. If that is what you want from a movie, then don't read the rest, just go and watch the movie, you won't be disappointed.

But what the movie really lacks is a good solid storyline. It is as if the director wanted the movie to feature this much of characters and they should all get the same amount of screen time, let it be at the expense of the story! That is the main issue with the movie.

Upto the interval, the movie just drags on, the usual stuff with the villain trying to steal an energy source and the superhero team assembling to get it back. There is another interesting thing here. The villain actually tries to manipulate the team and let them fight each other, and this goes on and on and on in the first half. Really, absolutely boring with clichés all over. No creativity of any sort.

In a superhero movie, one thing we expect is the introduction of the superheroes. Well, introduction???? There was no such thing, they just walked on to the scene saying, "Hi, there". No thrill, no excitement , no sheer blood rushing through the veins scene.

And some people were there for no reason at all. I do not know what Black Widow and Captain America did. They just felt like minnows compared to the Hulk and Thor and co.

The cast was good anyway. Well they are not doing their roles for the first time, are they? so no credit there to the Avengers Team. Jeremie Renner, Scarlet Johansson and Robert Downey Jr were superb.

After the interval, the movie gains some pace and it is all action. This is where the movie becomes watchable. Actually I liked the second half of the movie. Action does not need story or dialogues, does it? May be that is why. And last but not the least, is that guy Loki really a villain or a joker?? Is that what a villain is? never terrifying, not even for a 2-year-old. and in the end """Spoiler alert"""""" Hulk thrashes him and says "puny god". some villain, ha???!!!I am a big fan of superhero movies. In my opinion the best superhero movie released recently was X-Men First Class. Compared to that this is absolute crap, I would say. These guys made a movie which is to be their masterpiece, to which they put their money and effort limitlessly and it came out disfigured like this?, wow!!!!!

Padmarajan at his best
7 February 2012
This movie my Padmarajan really made me cry..............One of the best Malayalam movies I have ever seen. This guy is really one of the gods our God's own country has given birth to. I could not find a single fault with the film. The acting, screenplay and direction compete to excel each other.

The movie portrays the events that happen in a family in the 1980s in the backdrop of division of the family. Kaviyoor Ponnamma has given her best performance ever as the loving matriarch of the family. Mammootty and Karamana as her sons, Sreevidya and Unnimary as the daughter-in-laws complete the core cast. Good supporting performances from Ashokan and Kukku Parameshwaran as well.

The film concentrates on a particular feature of the modern day families, the modern ritual of sending elderly people to old age homes. The movie explores the rights and wrongs of this practice. The internal disturbances happening in the family are detailed in the film with much accuracy. The main focus of Padmarajan is on individual emotions. The characters stand out separately. We can identify with each of them. They are all characters we will find in our own neighbourhood.

Another important aspect is the role nature plays in the movie. Nature is a main supporting actor in every single one of this genius' movie. This too is not an exception. It is amazing how he makes us love our own home, our own courtyards and our own gardens. He is truly a director of NATURE

The Insider (1999)

A very good thriller
5 February 2012
The Insider is a 1999 movie directed by Micheal Mann based on a segment of CBS TV Show "60 Minutes". The movie depicts the true events that happened in the background. It is a about an interview of a tobacco company whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand portrayed by Russell Crowe. Al Pacino stars as Lowell Bergman, the producer of the show. There is nothing flambuoyant, nothing extravagant, just true events although dramatized for the sake of a movie.

The movie is a fantastic, pure thriller. It will grip you to the seats till the end. The screenplay is really brilliant but the standout factor is the acting of the two titans, Russell Crowe and Al Pacino. I was amazed by their performances.

I am not going to elaborate on the storyline here. You just watch and enjoy.

Vanaprastham (1999)

Vanaprastham
1 November 2011
About a week ago I saw the movie "Vanaprastham"...........

The movie has been with me for over a year now.....but I did not watch it because I thought it to be a slow movie depicting the poverty of Kathakali artists..........and I could not find the mood to watch that film............

But somehow one week ago I watched it...........and oh God, what a movie it was.............one of the best movies ever in Malayalam........actually in my opinion, one of the best movies I have ever seen in any language..........it stands a class apart from an average Indian movie..................hats off to Shaji N Karun, Mohanlal and Zakeer Hussain for his soothing background score...................

From what I knew, even some of the serious movie watchers have failed to watch this movie.......may be because of the similar attitude, I do not know......I seriously urge anyone who wants to see a good movie to see this movie if you have not yet............

The movie is about a Kathakali artist Kunjikkuttan portrayed by Mohanlal.........but the director is showing the life of an artist in that movie, be it a Kathakali artist or a painter or a movie artist, whatever........Kathakali is just a setting...............The name itself speaks about the movie........"Vanaprastham"............it is one of the four ashrams of life........."Brahmacharya" "Grihasthasram" "Vanaprastham" and "Sanyasam".............the movie portrays the different stages of an artist........................evolution of an artist, may be you can call it that way................

To me the stand out performances have been from the director Shaji N Karun himself, the great tabala maestro Zakkeer Hussain who composed the background score and the acting legend Mohanlal..............hats off to the director for making a complex storyline such as this into a movie which never bores the viewer...........not even for a second..........that is the main success of this movie.........It grips you from the start to the very end like in another world..........a world of Kathakali.........a world of art.......................and when the movie finishes, it haunts you....................the characters never fade..........they are still with me, every scene is being replayed over and over again in my head..........

The background score by Zakkeer Hussain plays a big part in setting the mood..............the music is really gentle and soothing..............what should I say........heavenly, may be

The supporting artists are also good......................the likes of Suhasini and Mattannur Sankarankutty Marar have done a great job........................but the real star of the show is Mohanlal himself................he made the character "Kunjikkuttan" alive....................I could feel him walking, breathing..........I did not at any time feel that there was any sort of acting going on...................there are some instances in the film when Mohanlal, being in the Kathakali Chutti makeup had to act with his eyes only................and oh, my God.........that was simply amazing...................Mohanlal is surely one of the greatest if not the greatest actors ever to have walked our planet earth............

The movie did win many awards including the best picture and best actor award and best editing award also in the national film awards....................the movie was greatly critically acclaimed but I do not think it was that much appreciated by the common folk, ie, us..........It is really sad actually...........................It is actually movies like Vanaprastham that should get popular acclaim instead of the unrealistic movies that we all love because we want to enjoy rather than appreciating reality.............................Really sad, really.

Sahara (2005)
9/10
Maybe The Most Underrated Film
11 December 2010
Sahara is one of the biggest financial flops of Hollywood.Critics rating doesn't hold that good either. But for me, this is one of the best wholesome entertainers I have ever seen. Action, adventure and comedy at its very best.

The credit for making this movie a visual extravaganza goes to the direction, cinematography and especially art direction. The movie highlights the natural beauty of Africa. The action sequences shot at River Niger is a perfect example.

The movie showcases some breathtaking action sequences. Well, it should, considering about the 130 million dollars poured into the movie. The film is fast, free flowing without giving a single minute of boredom like unwanted romance, sentiments or even unwanted dialogues. The movie is made to be a comic action adventure entertainer and does full justice to its genre.

Had this movie become a success, then Matthew McConnaughey would have been a real superstar by now. Such is the powerful, cheesy acting he features. It is a shame really that this movie did not succeed. The supporting cast is superb, especially William Macy and Lennie James. Lennis James makes the villain the most memorable character of the film.

Well, if you want to lie on your back, crack a snack and get some fun, then this is the movie for you. Once again, too bad it was a flop.

A Superb Collage
10 December 2010
When I say collage, it is a mix of superb acting by vineeth, mukesh, sreeni, shobhana and co; superb dialogues and screenplay; heartwarming music and a fantastic direction. You will not be bored a single minute you are watching this movie. However, I do not know why this movie was a box office flop. Maybe it was because it is a 'superstar-absentee'.

Hats off to Vineeth, who puts down a fantastic performance, may be the only unforgettable psycho-performance in Malayalam. The plot is about a professional dancer played by Shobhana being stalked by a stranger, Vineeth. Mukesh and Sreenivasan are the inspectors in charge of this case. They search for the stranger's motive and delves deep into his mind. What they find makes the story more interesting.

This is one of those movies which flow. You tend to go along with the stream. In fact, towards the end, my eyes were full of tears, happy tears. This is a must watch if u want to watch a Malayalam movie in an international mould.

The Notebook (2004)

Heart Warming
19 November 2010
I am not particularly a fan of romantic movies because most most of them give exaggerated importance to superficial pretensions. But this one, oh God, I do not know whether this should be put under romance genre. I think this should be tagged under the genre of love.

I do not want to talk to you about the plot because it is nothing, it is just an age old story. But we all have lived the same boring days again and again and then suddenly there may come a day which is, what can it be called, beautiful?. That is what The Notebook is. Really, really beautiful.

The script is simple but piercing. It might be more difficult to make a simple movie and The Notebook may come as an example. If you love good, heart warming stories, then this one is for you. Go,watch, cry, laugh, live!

Don't be fooled
17 September 2010
Please, don't be fooled by the pathetic vote given by the users. The film is the exact opposite of that. Look, the film is about a lonely man trying to rescue a deaf and dumb child from the clutches of two killers. If you have seen the film, Mercury Rising by Bruce Willis and liked it, you will certainly like this one too. Mammootty gives a fantastic performance. The emotional attachment between the character played by Mammootty and the child is heartwarming. Suresh Gopi and Babu Antony as the killers also do justice. Suresh Gopi in his 'Non-superstar' role is brilliant. And the direction is also good. The movie is a thriller and you will be thrilled, no doubt. And nothing else, just watch it.

A Fantastic film. But definitely not #1
5 February 2010
Shawshank Redemption is a fantastic film from the beginning right till the end. It is really beautiful. The direction and script are really superb. The acting of Morgan Freeman is exceptional. If Forrest Gump was made on another year, he would certainly have got an Oscar.

If you want me to describe the movie in one word,I would say, " Beautiful." The story was very good, the storytelling was better. The scriptwriter deserves an applause.

It is one of the best movies I have ever seen. It certainly deserves a spot in the top 250. But having said that, I don't think this movie should be #1. It will be like a disgrace to the movies like Schindler's list and Forrest Gump because those movies really touched my heart. I think Schindler's List and Forrest Gump should come above Shawshank Redemption.

1 thing I forgot to tell you. I liked the dialogue of Morgan Freeman with the parole evaluator. It was absolutely heart touching. This movie has a hidden propaganda. Well, not particularly hidden, anyway. It is about the question of imprisoning people. Should it be done??Do we have the right to do that?? Wouldn't it be better if we try to talk some sense into them?? Or, wouldn't it even be better if we kill them rather than to give them life sentences?? I think I have an answer but that shouldn't be discussed because I think this question will continue to be a moral dilemma of the human community

I really liked that dialogue. Rehabilitated?? Let me tell you something sonny, that word is for politicians so that you can wear a suit and a tie and can have a job. Brilliant. Heart touching.

This movie is an emotional dilemma folded together into an easily understandable story. There is one more thing I need to put here. Most o f the people who have rated this movie # 1 haven't got a clue about this hidden message. They have rated this because of the surprise ending. This is an open criticism.

3 Idiots (2009)
7/10
A good entertainer but over-hyped as usual
27 January 2010
Now a days people have the tendency to overreact to some good movies. Like in the case of Dark Knight, which was a good movie but not the immortal classic. Same thing goes here, this one is a good movie, sometimes u see movies to relax yourself. This is a good entertainer.

But for a movie to become a classic or the top 250 of all time as some people say, u got to have something which you won't forget for the rest of your life. But 3 idiots lacked such substance. The movie's theme is good. The educational system of India is rotten. I perfectly agree to it. Even more the perspective of the common man to their children's education is pathetic, in my eyes. The movie really conveyed that idea.

But let me ask you a question. Didn't Aamir Khan act in a movie called Taare Zameen Par, which sort of conveyed the same idea. That movie was good. It had heart. 3 Idiots is old wine in new bottle. The wine still tastes good. You can buy it, no problem. But don't b fooled. Don't think its new imported wine. Its still the old one.

If only the director was a little bit more realistic, I think I would have liked the movie much better. He might say that lot of people liked the movie, but its going to be short lived. He could have made the movie a classic. All was there, script and direction was good, but not up to the mark

A different movie
31 December 2009
A very good movie, a long way off from the traditional cinema, this is an innovation, a fantastic approach by the director. The story is one which is heard time and time again but the direction and script made this movie special. Hats off to Judd Apatow.

The movie is a satire to the base. You have to think again to see what's inside it. A real message, a real, you can't get away from the truth message

The cast is also good. Adam Sandler has done extremely well, exactly what was required by the character. Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann also were good.

I'll give it a 7/10.

Fantastic,heart-warming film
7 August 2008
Wow,that's all i've got to say.I am actually a good movie lover and from the movies i've seen this year,The Bucket List is so far the best. Well, what else could you expect putting together two of the best actors in Hollywood. The movie has got a good and simple storyline. The script is fantastic. The direction was superb. And most of all the acting. That was the highlight of the movie. It is the acting that made this movie so good and heart-warming.In my opinion this movie should be a strong candidate for the Oscars

This movie strongly focuses on love and human relationships and the worth of life.

To those who haven't seen the movie.Don't see this movie if you are searching for hilarious comedy or nerve-cracking explosions. But if you are a true movie lover and you adore actors like Nicholson,Pacino,Hanks or Freeman and if you like a film to stay in your heart for your lifetime,DON'T MISS THIS FILM

An all time classic
14 June 2008
Hi friends,

This is an all-time classic.A well made movie given attention to every single detail. The direction and storyline are excellent. But the highlight is the acting of Mohanlal and Shobhana.Very contrasting characters. They have made these characters immortal. All the people who see this movie will understand what great actors Mohanlal and Shobhana are.Seen this movie about 20 times and still enjoys the movie.Friends,if you are a Keralite, you certainly would have seen this movie by now.Others, please,if you love good movies and if u haven't seen this movie by now,try 2 get this movie somehow, with subtitles if u don't understand Malayalam

And there is another thing i have to tell.it's to those stupid people who r trying 2 remake this movie. They have made2 attempts by now.I have seen one,Chandramukhi in Tamil by Rajnikanth. And it was utter bullshit.I have given a rating of 10 for this movie. Then, that for it's Tamil remake would be about 0.
