9½ Weeks (1986)

underestimated portrait of a delicate start of a relationship

'9,5 Weeks' is often refered to as an erotic movie, or as an-intended-to-be-erotic movie, as some would say. Though some scenes definitely can be described as sensual, the film is also, or even more so, about the delicate start of a relationship. The relationship isn't a very long one, but also not short enough for being one with a one night stand-character. Which is, agreed, a simple, but interesting theme. And no, there isn't that much depth to the story, but the performances are the more credible. The way Kim Basinger walks away from Mickey Rourke, after 9,5 weeks, in a long shot that lasts a minute or so, is definitely very worthwhile to see and not that easy to play as it might look. No lines, no information, just as their relationship was. I think this film is underestimated.

I really can't think of anything that could be wrong with this film; the story, on the differences between the rational Britain and the more emotional Italy, is simple, but delicate and full of humor. The actors are more than marvellous, each and everyone of them. The settings are just right, as is the music and . This is British cinema at it's best. Relax, sit down, have a cup of tea and enjoy.....

The actors are more than marvellous, each and everyone of them. The settings are just right, as is the music and . This is British cinema at it's best. Relax, sit down, have a cup of tea and enjoy.....

The Pleasure of His Company (1961)

oscar wilde in the sixties

Well written, intelligent and elegant: Oscar Wilde in the sixties in San Francisco. It's a pleasure to see all the fine actors play out the nuances of their lines. Especially Lilly Palmer, who is absolutely wonderful and attractive.

The Appointment (1969)

underestimated 'European' Lumet

In my opinion, this film is highly underestimated. This is a very well shot film on beautiful locations. It is as if Antonioni was it's photographer. And another comparison: Stanley Kubrick made 'Eyes wide shut'a few years back (also underestimated, als usual with his films), but 'the Appointment' definitely has the same intensity, mystery and erotic tension as 'Eyes wide shut'. Both films are so quiet and intense, I only wish there were more films like this.
