What the #$*! Do We (K)now!? (2004)
An Interesting Thought... Gone Totally Wrong!!!
I watched this documentary at the request of a friend. And although my friends loved this movie, I could not find myself to believe anything that was being said in this film. Nor was I able to believe that this film could be construed as a documentary.
It seems to me that there is a huge problem with individuals that do not understand science. Or more importantly, when they do not understand the scientific method. Science is not about creating ideas based on a thing beyond calculation. Yet this film is based on speculation of science. And it provides ideas that are beyond scientific calculation.
In other words, it is the same as drinking Kool-Aid at a Jim Jones party. And in case you don't know who he is: He is the guy responsible for killing close to 1,000 followers in Jonestown.
The experts in this movie are not experts at all. And if you were to stay for the credits you would know this. So please, stay for the credits.
Bottom line: If you want to learn about Theoretical Physics, then read a book by Stephen Hawking or Kip Thorn. But do not watch this movie!!! If you have already watched this movie, then please realize that this is not the opinion of the scientific community!!!
An American Crime (2007)
A Truly Disturbing Story That Everyone Should Know About!!!!
Let me begin by saying, I believe this story is one that everyone should be familiar with. And for that, I would recommend people see this movie. But I do not think the film, in itself, was the quality I would've liked it to be.
The scenes seem to be too conservative at times. And the flashbacks to what had happened, previously, give the viewer an outside perspective of things. And it is that omniscient point of view that keeps the viewer from really becoming involved in the story.
I think Ellen Page did an incredible job of acting. And I truly love her movies. But I wonder if the people making this film were so afraid of insulting certain persons that they did not want to submerge themselves into a truly emotional reenactment of what had actually happened.
Bottom line: If you want a story that is presented to you in segments, then by all means, watch this movie. But if you want a truly disturbing film that puts you in the eyes of the victim, and makes you feel sick to your stomach... then there are other movies based on the same event that are much more involved!!!
I Am Sam (2001)
A Masterpiece For All Time!!!
I can only say that, 'I loved this movie'. And if I had any complaint whatsoever. It would be that, I thought it was too short. I loved every moment of this film.
The story isn't very complex. And there are no real surprises along the way. But the beauty is in watching these personalities manifest themselves. It is in understanding these characters that makes this movie interesting.
People tend to forget that movies are not reality. The director is there to tell a story. And I think she hits it on the bullseye on this one!!!
Bottom line: If you lack empathy, or think movies should be real, or action packed, ,or contain explosions... then do not watch this movie. But if you want an emotional film about humanity, I could not recommend a better film!!!
The Girl Next Door (2007)
The Most Disturbing Movie You Will Ever See!!!
Either you will love this movie, or you will hate it. But either way, you will agree... this movie grabs a hold of you and it won't let go!
Regardless of what actually happened in real life, or was portrayed in the books... this movie provokes a strong emotion in you. And it takes you to a place you don't want to be. You will feel disgusted, sad, angry, sick, and that's just for starters.
Warning: This movie is not for the squeamish!!! For me personally, it made me feel helpless. Because you are sitting there watching the movie unfold, and you can't do anything to stop it. And that for me, was the worse feeling of all.
Technical aspects: The acting is great. The dialogue is obscene. The nudity and sexual situations are disgusting. But it brings a realism that could not be achieved otherwise!
Bottom line: This movie will give you a small taste of what it's like to be victimized, or be near someone that has. And it will force you to rethink everything you ever thought about in life! So be warned!!!
The Contract (2006)
An Enjoyable Film!
The contract is an entertaining film. While not the best film in any way, it is still worth seeing. This is not an in depth thriller, or a work for the ages. But it is a fun way to spend your time.
I love John Cusack movies. And I love Morgan Freeman's acting roles as well. But they have never struck me as academy award winners. With that being said, they showcase the same personality they always have. And that works for me.
The story moves along at a steady pace. And though it never reaches that edge-of-your-seat excitement, it is never boring either.
Bottom line: If you are a fan of either one of these actors, it is worth taking a look at. Although I would doubt if it stands up to repeated viewings. But only time will tell....
First Born (2007)
The Worst Movie of Her (Elizabeth Shue's) Entire Career!!!
I went into this movie with the notion that Elizabeth Shue is a great actress. And she has made a lot of great movies. But the reality is, not even a miracle could've saved this movie from disaster.
The story is flat. It doesn't go anywhere. And it is entirely predictable. And on top of that, the scenes in the movie drag on-and-on. To the point that, it was a test of will for me to sit through the entire film.
Even if I were to look at it as a low budget movie, which it is. I cannot find a single aspect of the movie that had any promise whatsoever.
Bottom Line: If you must see this movie, then rent it. Because if you purchase this movie, I can almost guarantee that you will feel ripped off!!!
