Mr. Donkey (2016)

Some Backgrounds for You before Watch the Film
16 April 2017
This is a tragedy of a 1940's Chinese feminist. And much more than that.

Since the English subtitles are trash, and lack of some key info. To help to understand this film better, here are some backgrounds you should know:

The story happened in mountainous China in the 1940s. When Chinese suffered from the Japan's invasion in WWII, in this undeveloped little village far away from the war, a group of idealists who share a dream of "educating every children in the rural China (like NCLB)" of whom each has their own problems back in the city, founded a primary school. They soon find themselves face a series of ethical dilemmas and suffer the consequences of the choices they've made. Lies between their campus and the nearest water source is an over 10 kilometers treacherous mountain road. A black donkey named "lv de shui" is essential for them to get enough water for drinking and domestic usage. The title of this film, Lv De Shui, in Chinese means the water-fetching donkey, which is the name of the donkey.

But the school's budget proposal for keeping the donkey is denied by the government. So they fabricate a fake person named "Lv De Shui", as their school's English teacher, and use that freeloading money to cover their cost on the donkey. And one day, an official from the Ministry of Education came to inspect Mr. Lv De Shui, their English teacher...

OK, that's as far as i can go without giving you any spoilers.

This film gives you a stage-play feeling in cinematography and editing. The acting is quite convincing and genuine. And hats off to the cinematographer, Mr. Jong Lin. The color use in the film is bold yet beautiful. And the theme song, I love it.

This is an ambitious film in which the directors try to raise some questions, Like, does the ends justify the means? if yes, how far is too far? Where should we draw the line? If not, should we just stop and do nothing? Or are those who do nothing better than those who are willing to do anything? Or do we have the right to judge? Or in general, are we entitled to judge others life choices at all?

Like, which is more awful? Set a very high moral standard and can't keep it or simply set a low one?

Like, how easily people are to submit when facing violence or power.

Like, how far your act of righteousness can go when the act itself will cost you financially and physically?

Like, how hurtful it could be of labeling people.

But for me personally, I think it's about being truthful and brave, be truthful to yourself and be brave to stand up for yourself.

Watch it, you'll like it.

Enemy (2013)
1/10
NOT smart. The worst on similar subject.
1 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
1.Why the heck should someone be scared of or be paranoid about finding out there's a stranger looks like him? Yes we know it's all his 'imagination'. But that's not a good enough reason for all the spooky and mysterious atmosphere the director so desperately to bring.

2.The story. After about 30 min suffering, I was hoping that I am wrong about the plot, that there are some awesome scenes or explanations await me, to blow my mind. I suffered and suffered, finally the big ending came. And it is nothing but more disappointment.

OMG, Mr. Villeneuve, you can show us all the chaos you want. But remember, it should and only be the character's chaos, not the director's! His world can be a mess, but your story telling can't.

3.The enjoyment of watching: None! Even if you've done your homework on this movie, like they say you must if you want to enjoy this one, there's ABSOLUTELY NO FUN to watch! There is no suspense, no puzzle solving, no wisdom sharing, nothing. Just a crazy boring dude got all spooky about finding another person in him.

Some viewers cheers for this one because they 'decipher' the movie. Well complication doesn't equal to a good movie. Just like you figure out that your wife's uncle's brother-in-law's grandmother's son-in-law's daughter's grandson's mother's cousin is your wife herself, doesn't prove you are smart, just means you are bored like hell.

There are lots of great movies on similar subject, and this one is the worst I've ever seen. Go watch Mulholland Dr., Shutter Island, the Sixth Sense, Memento, or Identify one more time if you like, just don't waste your life on this one.

If you give this one a 9, you should give Third Person a 90, seriously!

My Sassy Girl (2008)
1/10
Bad remake
25 August 2008
Im a big fan of the original Korean version. This Hollywood remake is a total failure.

The screenplay is bad. The story is much less convincing than the original.

In the original version, the girl was heartbroken, whose fiancé was killed in a tragic accident, and was really sassy. This made her character inner conflicted. On one side, she was a vulnerable, heartbroken girl. She was so beautiful, so sweet, so sad, like a princess lost her prince. On the other side, she was a furious, sassy, horrible lady. She was mad at the God, at life, and even at herself. According to the typical social standard she was not a decent girl. But sometimes, as i said, she is so sweet.

In the meantime, her boy, the boy, was confused. He had no idea about the accident. The girl was just a sassy beautiful girl. Himself, was a lazy, yet naive boy. He took what the life gave him. Hardworking was not in his book. One day a beautiful girl came into his life. He didn't even know what was going on. He didn't even like the girl at first.

In the days he was with the girl, he was silently changed by the girl. From a outsider to a hardworking, life-loving boy.

The remake, however, gives us a geek who had a glorious future b4 he met the girl. In less than half an hour, they seems bonded so much because of no reason. and What happened next seems so fake. Too much acting but no true feelings.

In order to avoid the spoilers, there are few details above about the remake one.

The only reason to watch the remake is to know how remarkable the Korean version is and how trash this remake could be.
