Van Helsing (2004)
Misunderstood Movie, but worth the watch
I think the reason that people are giving VH the raspberry is that they are presented with mismanaged expectations. This movie is a campy B horror movie with $100+ million dollar special effects and tons of one-liners. The trailers lead the viewer to believe that it is a high budget thriller that honestly tries to scare....it is not. To substantiate, my family and I found ourselves laughing outloud at genuinely funny jokes 9 or 10 times throughout the movie when no one else in the theatre was laughing-I guess they just werent expecting comedy. The effects throughout the movie were stunning to say the least. The werewolf had moments where he looked very poorly animated, but the vampires and their morphing was seamless. Jackman looked great, and Kate B. (WOW!) These roles certainly didnt stretch the acting abilities of these folks, but this movie isnt about deep dialog. (POSSIBLE SPOILER)(POSSIBLE SPOILER) I am sure that some people left the theater in a bad mood, considering the surprise at the end where the typical happy guy gets girl ending is abandoned.
Bulletproof Monk (2003)
No chemistry - lame dialog - don't pay full price for this one
Sean William Scott and Chow Yun Fat trade mediocre one-liners in this rip off of truly funny movies like Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon. There is no chemistry between the two, but then even great actors would have a hard time getting up to recite the lame story dialog. Wait for this one to show up on the $1 extended view area at your local video store.
