The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
Best Movie in a long time
This was amazing. I'm trying to put it into words, here, and it's hard, so forgive me for excess adjectives.
First of all, the visuals. The FX were great. Very smooth, very impressive, very realistic. Fantastic job there. The location was so amazing. One shot of riders across a field, with mountains in the distance... so amazing. The visuals alone were enough to make you breathless at times.
The relationships between all the characters were so real. Even with such a huge cast, everyone still had their own, very definite character, and very clear relationships with everyone else. It was all subtle, yet understood, with an artistry that is rare, especially in big blockbusters like this one.
The directing is superb, and while watching it, you are completely drawn in, you realize later that it's almost like a very long, action packed music video. Lots of gorgeous montages that are set to music, and despite little dialogue through these scenes, so much information is conveyed you don't notice the lack of dialogue. What speach there is is direct, to the point, witty, and important. Exchanges between Logolas and Gimli are always funny, and touching, tear-jerking, or just cute between Merry and Pippin, or Sam and Frodo. Legolas and Aragorn have a charged friendship, very powerful, and Ian McKellan's Gandalf is powerful, as always.
If you were to see one movie all year, this would be it. If you were to see one movie your whole life, this would be it. Far from the Matrix's conclusional let-down, this was the best conclusion to a trilogy ever. Leaving you both victorious and grieving, satisfied and screaming, "NOOO!" at the same time, it's the best seven bucks I've spent possibly ever (soon to be fourteen, then twenty-one, then...). See it. Laugh. Cry. Shout. Rage. Find something deeper. This movie is just... you have to see it to worship it.
Gargantua (1998)
I thought it was so bad it was outstanding!
If you're looking for a movie that will move you, make you laugh, cry, thrill you, scare you, and shake you to the core of your being - THIS ISN'T IT!
Wow. Such a clunker. I knew it was going to be horrible - that was why I watched it. With that in mind, I loved it! The only truly good thing about it was Adam Baldwin. The other actors all generally sucked, and the Outstanding Sucking Award goes to the son, whoever played him, I can't be bothered to go back and check the name. His acting was horrible, and his voice annoying. Some credit, however, must be given to the writers, who gave him the awful lines and the terrible parallel to the baby creature who had also lost its mother. WHAT A SHOCK! I WAS SO STRUCK TO LEARN ABOUT THE AMAZING CONNECTION HE HAD WITH THE CREATURE!
The creatures were so truly awful as to remind me of the original Star Trek series, and the plot was obviously contrived after the writers had watched Jurassic Park, then Godzilla, and then gotten heavily drunk
It was a wonderful movie to watch and insert lines into (think Mystery Science Theatre), and Adam Baldwin was at least competent, even if his lines sucked too, and he's always nice to look at. If you're looking for a great clunker, this is it! I was well pleased with what it is.
Dead Again (1991)
I don't understand the negative views
SPOILERS!!
This was an excellent movie! Kenneth Branagh is amazing, as a director and actor. Having previously seen him only in Shakespeare roles, it was neat to see him differently. Since I totally missed it when it came out, all I knew was what was on the back of the movie box when I saw it. Therefore, I had no idea what was going to happen. I didn't get that Mike was Margaret, or the rest, until I had enough clues from the movie. I suppose I should mention somewhere in here that simply looking at Branagh was enough for large parts of the movie - as well as being good-looking, he's a good actor, the kind where you can stare at his wonderful face and not have to start laughing because some of his facial expressions look so odd. You can just believe in the role he's playing. The end was so outrageous, but somehow I still managed to get into it. I was watching Dead Again the same night I watched Psycho and The Fall of the House of Usher, on a Friday the 13 movie night, so I was expecting some cheesy horror/thriller film. It was so much better than that: comedy, romance, and some thriller elements. I recomend this movie to absolutely anyone, and I'm planning on buying it the next time I'm at a video store. Two thumbs up!!!!
