Devil in a Blue Dress (1995)
Way over the top....and LOVED IT....
"FRANK IS MY BROTHER" Talk about subplots of subplots...you really have to pay attention to follow the story. Great cast and great characters..The film has a great look and a very fast pace.
I'm surprised it didn't do well at the box office but neither did The Black Dalia or Mulholland Falls. Gotta love Mouse....he just rolled in and then just rolled out...he had some perfect timing
It just wouldn't have been right if Luke(the crazy gardener) didn't check in near the end. Great sound track.
It was rare a black man could win in the late 40's. Where there is politics, there is money and murder. Still true today.
I'm glad Easy(Denzel) decided to become a private eye. How could he go back to a 9 to 5?
Red (2008)
Plodding, predictable, with too many clichés
I thought I was going to see another film of the same title. To tell you the truth I wish I had. The acting was unconvincing and awkward at times. Where as Gran Torino was fresh and riveting, I found this film boring and cumbersome.
I don't gamble much but I was 100% sure the bad kid's father would live and at least one of his sons would die, at least the son who expressed he had a conscience for sure would die. I would have liked it better if the mom had gotten shot as she tried to diffuse the situation. Anything but the overly predictable outcome.
I understand they had some problems in production hiring/ firing and it shows. The scene where the dog (imaginary or real who cares)comes to him when he was dying was pathetic.
This was more of a Lifetime project with a little more violence and cursing. I can see why it didn't do so well and cannot (or don't want to) see how this film got a 7/10 rating. I'm not a hater and I feel the 4 I gave it was generous and only because I love dogs as well.
El violín (2005)
Authentic and Griping
What a great story and film. The acting and casting were flawless. The camera work, a little iffy at times didn't really distract much. I can't help but wonder why great films like this are seen by relatively few people and seldomly make their money back. I really liked the thoughtfulness and attention to detail i.e. the mule intuitively showing up and then again wanting to avoid the approaching soldiers. The plot line thread of the checkpoint guard, who risked his life by supplying guns to the rebel peasants was thoughtful and provocative.
This film really captured the humbleness, heart-felt-ness, and basic goodness of simple salt-of-the-earth people ultimately betrayed only by their trust and naivety.
