Paranormal Activity (2007)
Scares Aren't Everything...
"Paranormal Activity" starts off with the two protagonists, Katie and Micah, living a happy life together in a nice home in a pleasant suburban neighborhood. Getting a good night's sleep soon becomes difficult as Katie explains to Micah that something has been haunting her. Shortly after, Micah buys a rather expensive video camera to see if he can catch some sort of video evidence of Katie's haunting. For the first few nights, Micah captures some startling noises and shadows occurring in and around their room. Throughout the day, Micah discusses the events that occurred that night with Katie. As more nights pass, the previously happy couple learn that they are not only being haunted, they are being very closely watched by something more sinister than they ever imagined.
Although saying "Paranormal Activity" is the scariest movie of all time may be a bit of an exaggeration, it is certainly a very good movie. True to old Hitchcock movies such as "Psycho", "Paranormal Activity" relies more on tension and suspense than actual scares. Saying that "Paranormal Activity" is the most suspenseful movie of all time may be more appropriate.
Just when you think something scary is going to happen, absolutely nothing happens (sometimes). This is part of the beauty of "Paranormal Activity." Oren Peli doesn't need CGI or intestines getting splattered all over the walls to make, for example, my very manly friend cover his eyes.
The acting Katie and Micah (their actual names) is so top notch that it makes you feel as if you are watching a real life couple. This adds to the creepiness of the film.
"Paranormal Activity" starts off a little slow, but it eventually picks up pace. Throughout the first half of the movie, there is some really superb character development with some surprisingly funny dialogue. For all you people that want to see a scary movie, fear not, "Paranormal Activity" gets very scary, especially within the last 30 minutes.
With a budget less than 15000 dollars and shooting the entire film within a week, Oren Peli has achieved an outstanding accomplishment. Highly recommend. 9/10 Stars
Lie to Me (2009)
Top Notch Television
Lie to Me has quickly become my new favorite show. Its cast is incredible. Tim Roth is perfect as Dr. Cal Lightman. Kelli Williams, Monica Raymond, and Brendan Hines are also amazing and give incredible performances. When i saw the previews, I did not think that this show could be interesting in any way. Fortunately, I gave it a chance, and I was not disappointed. The script is cleverly written and is delivered flawlessly. Every episode is clever and fresh in its own way- they are all very different, but excellent nonetheless. Lie to Me has made me look at crime solving with a whole new perspective. I love this show.
10/10
Dragonball Evolution (2009)
This Movie Sucked... Really Bad
The beginning looked relatively promising, but i wasn't too impressed. I was thinking that it would just improve as the movie went on, but I was wrong, very wrong.
First off, I didn't like the modern setting. Why couldn't they stick to the original show? I honestly think they should just remake this movie. There were no awesome powers or crazy fight scenes. The villains also sucked. The dialog was very poorly written as well.
From the start, you have very unlikeable characters. Almost everyone was very poorly cast. I thought Goku and Master Roshi were fine, but Bulma was absolutely terrible. I hated her and really wanted her to die.
The ending made me very angry also. I was hoping that there would be some epic fight, but again, I was very disappointed. After this "fight" was over, I was left scratching my head in disbelief.
Terrible dialog, awfully cast characters, and a pathetic journey and ending should have made Dragonball Evolution a straight to DVD release.
And flying Hummers? Common... 3/10
Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008)
Very interesting.
If you can't admit that this is a good movie, which I believe it is, you must admit that it is fun to watch. Never have a seen a movie quite like Repo! The Genetic Opera. This movie is refreshingly original and a great pleasure to watch. Some great scenery and effects are used to make your movie-going experience memorable. It is also very cleverly written and definitely worth the price of that expensive ticket! If you liked Sweeney Todd, you will definitely like this one. Great acting all around by the main characters. To name a few, Alexa Vega was superb as Shiloh, and Anthony Stewart Head was also great as the repo man. My favorite character would have to be the grave robber. Most of the songs are very catchy, might I add. I am embarrassed to say that I bought a few of the songs off of iTunes.
A great movie experience!
Shark Attack 3: Megalodon (2002)
Where to start with this one...
Wow. This movie is truly amazing. I really don't know where to begin. First off, let me say that I would have never had watched this movie if it had not been on the SciFi channel.
OK so all of a sudden this big shark comes out of now where and starts eating helicopters, rafts, and the occasional jet ski. You know how in Jaws the scary music would come on when the shark was coming? Well in Shark Attack 3: Megaladon, you would know when the shark was coming because it would make these crazy animal noises. It sounded like something out of the jungle. The shark roars and grunts got a little old after a while.
Unfortunately there was pretty much no eating- no awesome shark carnage. The shark would just swallow everything whole... Who knew sharks had a sweet tooth for jet skis and giant rafts. Also, the CGI is terrible- watching it almost made me want to cry.
All the clips of the shark seemed to be stolen from the archives of the Discovery Channel. A man is seen jumping from a boat, only to jump straight into the gaping jaws of a Great White. Also, a man riding a jet ski looks behind him for a quick second, and out of no-where, when he turns around, there is another Great White from the Discovery Chanel waiting with its mouth wide open. Screaming all the way, he drives right down the sharks throat... This movie is truly a masterpiece...
The only reason I gave this poor excuse of a film 2 stars is because of its pure hilarity. You can just laugh at how terrible it is. If you are a fan of B movies and you flip on the SciFi channel and Shark Attack 3: Megalodon happens to be on, you may want to give it a watch. On second thought, watching this movie may cause loss of brain cells and premature death, so I would just avoid this movie all together.
