Kidulthood (2006)
Bleak look at the lives of UK urban teenagers
This is a good film. I've watched it a few times, which I why I know I like it, because usually I can't watch a film more than once.
First of all, let me say something about realism. The people that say it is unrealistic, have never really seen these aspects of the UK and they must be living in a bubble or something. I was in a gang for a number of years, and I can tell you that people like this really exist. Furthermore, people much worse than this really exist. But you don't have to believe me, just pick up any newspaper or look at our inner-city crime statistics. I'm not saying it's the most realistic film ever but I don't know how anyone could think it was unrealistic.
As for the movie. The film explores the tragic and bleak lives of a bunch of, perhaps even average, teenagers from deprived inner-city London. The main bad character is menacing and nasty, but some of the "good" characters come across as likable. This is good, because although they are thugs and idiots in some respects, it shows how these kind of people are liked by others in their own communities and are not universally hated as an outsider with a better upbringing might imagine they would be.
So I would say the story is believable, the characters are good, and the director is good at provoking an emotional response from the viewer. Perhaps it works best, if like me, you have experience of that kind of background, but I would recommend you check this film out regardless.
August Underground's Mordum (2003)
August Underground's Boredom
I just watched this directly after watching August Underground.
What a let down. Horrorbrain said this was the number 1 sickest film. This is total rubbish. They also said that toe-tag are the masters of gore.
When the woman pulls the other woman's nipple ring off at the end, you can see her just put the gore in place on the nipple. Come on... how is this "masters" of gore. Ridiculous. And earlier the main woman "cuts" her stomach, basically she just rubs some gore on herself and its blindingly obvious that this is what she is doing. Yeah this is "mastery"...
When the guy gets killed with a hammer in the second scene, the main character looks like he is arranging some pillows or something, way too gentle. The leg wobbling is a copy of Texas chainsaw massacre.
The penis cutting scene is actually pretty good. I give you some points for this.
The so called puking scenes, should be called dribble scenes - lame. If you want puking, you can see this for real in Japanese porn. I read a review and some dude was like "oh man its like the ones being puked on are not enjoying it and the ones doing the puking are".
First of all, the woman character just dribbles a bit on the other women, there isn't any proper puking. Secondly, the women being "puked" on alternate between bad acting and what seriously looks like laughing.
The disembowelment scene - disembowelment is painful, not funny. So why is the woman laughing her head off? Bad acting. Also its really amateur.
Maggot then shags the stomach wound. This is pretty dumb because there could be some hydrochloric acid in there. Its funny to watch his stupid expressions of "passion".
Dead baby is quite good in the shed scene. Eating the "maggots" off the baby was lame. He could have actually ate a maggot for this but you can't see anything.
The kid being raped in the bathtub scene is pretty clucked up. It doesn't really look like he is raping the kid but the kid is a real kid. The producers are morally reprehensible for doing this. I'd be interested to know how they did this, how old was the kid etc?
Again in this film, there is no plot, apart from some "character development" and the little tiff between maggot and main character, over the main girl.
Well alright, I was mildly entertained by this movie but it is over- hyped beyond belief.
The only thing that is sick about this film is the fact they depicted kiddie rape. Its not like its super graphic or realistic, its just the fact that they felt the need to include it.
The rest of the film looks like some teenager's shooting a school horror project or something. This is really going to annoy all the fan-boys but the scene in Hostel with the eye at the end is about 50 times more compelling and reaction generating than anything in this movie.
August Underground (2001)
Not as bad as everyone says, in both senses
I just watched this film. Yes all the way through.
In terms of gore or being horrified, this is nothing. I didn't feel at all repulsed during this film. Its not really possible since the quality is so bad and the gore etc is kind of lame.
Some scenes are stupidly unrealistic like when he punches the hitch- hiker they pick up. It is obvious that there is no power in his punches. It looks farcical.
Also when they have the two brothers in the basement and he punches one, its obvious he isn't punching hard (because its being filmed). This is stupid, don't bother to do it if you are going to do it like that. You'd be better of not showing the hits and adding some SFX.
Also, there is quite a bit of smashing people in the head with a hammer. But its pretty obvious its some kind of toy hammer because no damage occurs to the heads of the people being hit. (yeah I know its a flunking toy hammer, because obviously people aren't getting hurt, but the point is to make it look realistic)
The ending is hilarious, its like some kind of "scary movie", this woman is having her head hit with the toy hammer whilst being flunked doggy style, in the basement, and the cameraman comes down. The black woman is like "that's what I'm talking about" and then "oh sheet" and she runs off. Stupid.
Oh, and all the scat stuff is lame. It looks like the brownie mix that it is. Its really dumb they have this woman, if they were really depraved they would do some seriously depraved stuff, but basically they don't do anything but rub this brownie mix on her and gag her with her boyfriends toe, which she doesn't really object to. You never see her ultimate demise anyway.
There is definitely no plot to this movie.
Its not scary, not really gory, or that repulsive. The acting sucks apart from the lead character and the cameraman who come across well as the douche-bags that they are. Alright, I suppose the end hookers aren't that bad.
OK, all this aside, I kind of enjoyed the movie, it was quite comical. But I found myself siding with them and wanting them to kill more people. I mean, its a horror right, and what do I want from a horror but people getting slashed up? Like when you watch something pathetic like Scream, and you just want them all to get killed.
You don't really see any killing really apart from the toy hammer scenes, and then the death's are not really protracted or believable. You cannot for a minute believe that someone has actually died.
There are scenes like when the cops appear. How did they get away? Its pretty dumb if you are a serial killer to go around getting yourself noticed.
How did they get the tattoo brothers back to the house? I doubt they could have pulled that off. Its too much of a stretch of my imagination how these idiots could have done.
Sometimes I also felt bored, like when he's smearing the scat I'm thinking "yeah hurry up and get onto something else".
I could say that Flower of Flesh and blood sheets all over this movie, and it does, as its fantastically cringe-inducing. But all the fan-boys will start spewing the line "but there not meant to be the same". I know this but I don't care because people rank this movie higher, so they bring it into the same arena when they do this, which is stupid because it is NOTHING compared to it. FOFAB is a clucking masterpiece.
But I don't want to be a complete hater, I feel somewhat guilty because the guy obviously made some effort. I respect the guy for the movie, its quite funny and a nice attempt to capture some loony tunes killers. I guess I should watch the next one also however because its even more hyped. I look forward also to see if he brings some influence to some mainstream stuff.
Thriller - En grym film (1973)
Really awful film, badly shot, and boring
I don't think it is necessary for us to see an anal cumshot for us to comprehend the abuse she suffers. In fact, the focus on the genitals is more likely to excite the viewer than align him/her with the suffering.
The porn in this film is the only shocking aspect and probably the only reason the film has any notoriety. If you were a mainstream viewer, it may be shocking, but if you have ever seen a porn film (if you haven't go watch one now for educations sake), then you will see immediately how unnecessary those scenes are. If I wanted to see porn I would have gone to a porn site instead of watching the movie. It is so pathetic that the producer had to resort to this to get ratings. Absolutely pathetic.
Every action scene is filmed in mind-numbingly slow slow-motion. Was the effects board stuck on this setting or something? The effects are really bad. I mean, really really bad. The blood looks like paint, the wounds look like someone spilled their spaghetti on their shirt. I think small children could come up with more realistic effects.
Everything about this movie is stupid.
Honestly, don't waste your time watching it. I did, and I regret it. I'm not even entertained by how crap it was.
