The Batman (2022)
Robert Pattinson is a terrible actor and it shows
There were several good supporting actors but the lead was misscast and brought the film to its knees. It's hard to tell if there was a bad script below that bad acting because anything would die under that monotone. It took me three times to make it though because quite frankly I was talking asleep. I've watched tons of action and support hero movies. I know what I'm getting myself into and I rate based on the type of movie or show relative to its peers. This is below average.
Campus Code (2015)
This movie absolutely makes sense while still not great.
I saw many reviews talking about plot holes and character actions not making sense. I'm going to explain it for those who don't "get it.". These are absolutely spoilers.
The whole game is an MMO. The movie only breaks the wall at the end when we see the players. MMO games are open world the characters that are unresponsive are NPCs or avatars that are not being used. One user is Trans and plays Izzy also that's get secret etc. Somewhere along the way the four principle characters stop being played by thirty users but continue on. What is perceived by the programmers add a virus is in fact artificial intelligence.
The tool moderators user to kick off users that breach the TOS was used unsuccessfully on the new AI beings. In the end they decided that they needed to let the programmers know they exist and has conscious thought.
Lastly the group that makes the least sense are the greifers. IRL they don't make sense! They're usually kids that aren't interested in the game, just wrecking everyone else's game play. They're jerks. Once you know all this there are no loose ends, plot holes or the like.
The Walking Dead: Stalker (2020)
Making the case for a return to radio
For me this was the least enjoyable episode in the entire series. Why? I couldn't see what the hell was happening for most of it. It was like the darkness episode of GOT with even less light. I watch Talking Dead as well but I'll have to pay close attention to know what happened.
Deadbeat (2014)
Terrible title good show
OK first off Tyler Labine has seemingly been the death knell of many good shows. Not that he's a bad actor or I dislike him. The guy seems cursed. Most things he's on he plays a supporting role and the show goes on for one season or less. Some just get a short second season in death row.
Base on the title I thought this would be simply a show about a slacker and there's already plenty of those shows. The premise is not original but very nicely done and amusing. I think all the projects I am thinking of suffered from the week wait before the next episode plus the inexplicably long hiatus that seems to be the norm these days. The binge watching atmosphere seems to work well as it keeps the momentum going.
As I mentioned it's an amusing show in the spirit of a Harold Ramis movie. It grows on you quickly and you'll find you watch more episodes in one sitting than you originally intended.
Wild Seven (2006)
Starts like Tarantino but is a mess.
Unfortunately I managed to read the good reviews of this movies and it looked like a gem. There are basically three story lines one of which comes and goes with no rhyme or reason. The other two are centered around revenge and come together sloppily.
Other than that there are good actors in bad roles and bad actors in nonsensical roles. You have to ask why certain characters are even in the movie. One character has troubles seeming like he stole something. He's killed and the situation and his murder has nothing to do with the rest of the movie. It not only doesn't influence the main plot or any other characters, they don't even know anything about it. They think he's just sleeping one off.
I hate to spoil it but it ends abruptly like so many films (and the Sopranos) seem to do today. Leaving the viewer to ask "WTF did I just watch?"
Ultraviolet (2006)
Milla is hot!!! but......
Milla is hot as always. The action whether fight scenes or "car" chases looks like anime. They remind me of PC games from the 1990s. Yes, almost all movies use CGI but TV shows like Babalon 5 were looking way more realistic 12 years ago.
I was wondering if this was on purpose. The quality of the story line is similar to the Matrix Just enough to move the action scenes along but pretty empty. The ending is uninspired. That's no spoiler believe me.
Overall, when it comes on HBO etc. you might as well watch it but don't go out of your way. It's not worth owning on DVD.
Scary Movie 4 (2006)
A few laughs but pretty dull
This movie is part of a tired franchise and not the one started by the Wayan brothers. It all started with Airplane nearly thirty years ago and moved into The Naked Gun etc. to Scary Movie 3. The actors and gags slowly churn some from brother to brother with the exception of Leslie Nielsen.
It basically spoofs four movies with others thrown in. The three main storyline movies were not very interesting to start and the comedy is not much of an improvement.
Tom Cruise is parodied in both The War of the Worlds and his Oprah appearance. This is interlaced with The Grudge, The Village, and the whole thing is bookended with Saw.
Batman: Dead End (2003)
Best Batman Yet
With apologies to Adam West, this is the only actor, Clark Bartram, I could almost believe is "really" Batman. It's too bad that they could never make the half a million dollar movie this would be if it was full length. The studios and copyright holders would never allow it. Most of the money comes from merchandising these days and I suspect that's all they're interested in as apposed to making a good movie.
The problem with this feature is first and foremost too short. Just when things look grim for Batman it ends. I wanted to see more!
If I were a producer and Sandy Collora showed me this as an example of what he would do I would back the movie.
A Minute with Stan Hooper (2003)
Norm is back!
"The Norm Show" was one of the funniest sitcoms ever. Now "A Minute With Stan Hooper" looks like a worthy follow-up. I've only seen the pilot; which was funny as few pilots are.
The coming attractions look like Max Wright will be the Mayor next week. Hopefully it will be an ongoing role.
Now that he's in a good time slot, the show should do well.
Johnny English (2003)
Quite Implausible
Johnny seems a pleasant enough fellow involved with a totally implausible plot/premise. It's all "bean" done by Peter Sellers and much better. See on of the Pink Panther movies or even The Tuxedo for more laughs.
The best line "Johnny English, Secret Service" was played over and over and over again on TV commercials. Nothing else remarkable.
