Past Lives (2023)

TLDR; The movie has a good premise but falls short because of how it wastes time on the wrong things and doesn't build up anything in the story. This only causes it to be a boring, awkward feeling waste of time. I wouldn't really recommend watching this movie, but I would recommend listening to its soundtrack.
I don't get why this movie is getting all the praise it's getting. It is a lackluster tale of life at best, and a boring snoozefest at worst. The movie has a great premise and could've been actually something worth watching if some things were done differently. The biggest issue of the movie is -in my opinion- that the first half of the movie does not do a good job on making us invested in the characters themselves and also does not do a good job on showing the life circumstances leading to the choices characters make. Not everything in life has to have a logical reasoning but playing with someone's emotions and making big decisions that effect both your and their life, should at least have some reasoning behind it. The movie does not do this in any sort of way and expects you as the viewer to just care about the characters and how fate got them to this point. It also attempts to imbue its story with depth by overtly discussing themes of fate, but it feels forced, as if it's compensating for a poorly executed narrative by grasping at themes to engage the audience.
These issues make every scene in the second half of the movie feel very awkward, this could be done on purpose but I still think some scenes felt off because the buildup to that point was done in a very lackluster way, if we are gracious enough to even call it a buildup.
There were aspects of the movie that I liked, or else my rating would have been even lower. Firstly, the soundtrack stood out to me; it has a pleasant yet open feeling to it. Additionally, I enjoyed how the movie -just by its premise not anything else unfortunately- showed how unpredictable life and fate are and how you could end up at a point in your life that you never would've imagined.

TLDR; If you don't mind the plot progressing solely due to the incompetence of the main character, the police, and everyone close to the main character and want a thriller about a cyber-stalker, then you should maybe consider this movie.
Starting off with the positives, I think that the thriller side of the movie is done very well. The movie gets intense at times and does well at conveying the stressful moments. This is mostly thanks to the very well acted performance of the mc, but also due to the nicely executed introduction of the villain which made him/her a real unhinged threat. I also liked some of the creative shots in the movie.
Moving on to the negatives, the biggest negative is that everyone in the movie makes the dumbest decisions ever, by either not taking the threat seriously or by sheer incompetence. It's hard to write about this without going into spoilers but I don't think it's hard to imagine what I mean, since this is all too common in this genre. The ending also felt rushed, again it's hard to write about without going into spoilers.

TLDR; If you're expecting complex topics to be handled, you should watch something else, it's just a simple, fun zombie/disaster movie.
When it comes to the writing, the main characters made logical decisions which is usually something these kinds of movies do wrong. They were sceptical when they should've been and knew the limits to what they can and can't do, except for Nam-san, he can just do anything. As written in the TLDR, there isn't much complexity, so don't expect worldbuilding or very complex characters. Something I didn't really like was the attempted humor in the movie, both with the gang-leader and the random lady in the small town. This could be fun for some, especially when watching with family or friends.
Acting was good apart from the young male lead, he was over-acting a bit. Music and everything else was fine, nothing special.
