In the Cut (2003)
Chick flick bordering on soap opera
I liked this film in spite of myself. But it is shot full of mistakes.
When the woman finally asks the Detective about the tattoo of the 3 and the spade he says he belongs to a club. She could have at least asked him how many members are in the club.
Or asked him if he can tell her who is in the club. And then let him in on seeing the tattoo on the suspected killer. I don't think Malloy ever acts suspicious in any way. Too bad Nicole Kidman didn't agree to do this role. She would have been much better than Meg Ryan. Plus the sex scenes would have been incredible to watch.
I see this movie as an example of main stream movies moving more and more toward including porn scenes. It has to happen. The merging of main stream movies and porn movies. Real characters having real sex or at least simulated sex. I guess movies like Eyes Wide Shut also fit this category.
I guess I have seen too many movies. The plot of this one was obvious and the identity of the killer was not hard to guess or figure out.
But I still liked it because I like Meg Ryan and I liked the acting of the guy who played Malloy. Still it is a chick flick bloody soap opera with some sex thrown in.
'It's Alive!' (1969)
So Bad it is Good
As others have said this movie is so bad that parts of it are good.
I would say this is the worst movie I have ever seen. But it is good fun.
I can see that it would play well on late night TV or in a drive in
back in 1969. I liked the location shots and the crazy Mr. Greely. And
the pretty blond. The monster was too lame for words.
Some of the worst acting I have ever seen in a movie. Perod.
But all in all a very campy movie. Pure trash. Reminded me of "The Thing" in Arizona. And "What is it?" South of the Border. A good play on tourist traps. A bit of a Psycho ripoff.
WUSA (1970)
One of my favorite Paul Newman movies
If you like this movie you will love the book it comes from:
HALL OF MIRRORS by Robert Stone.
This is another example of a book that is so literary it could not really be done justice in a movie.
Still I love both the book and the movie.
But check out the book for the full experience of
Robert Stone's wit and wisdom.
This is my favorite Robert Stone book(Hall of Mirrors)along with his other masterpiece DOG SOLDIERS which was made into the movie WHO'LL STOP THE RAIN.
Note: The info here gives the filming location as Louisiana but the final political rally scenes were filmed in Hollywood.
Faustrecht der Freiheit (1975)
A very good Fassbinder Film
If you like Fassbinder's films you will like this one. I was pleasantly pleased with it. Sadly though the plot was so apparent I knew what was going to happen from the moment he said he had to buy a lottery ticket. Also, I would have liked it much better if the whole movie had stayed in the carnival. Of course that would have been another movie entirely but I like carnivals and would like to have seen Fox the Talking Head in action. Also the 3 carnival strippers in action.
It was clear and obvious what was going to happen to Fox. I thought the final scene though was terrific and horrifying. Sad but oh so predictable. Still this movie is Fassbinder at his early best. It is also the common tale of nothing but bad things coming from winning the lottery. It is like that old saying "A fool and his money are soon parted".
