Cujo (1983)
A mostly faithful adaptation of the story
I first read cujo about a year ago and like all stephen king books I have read I loved it, so when I had a chance to watch the film I took it.
The story of cujo is simple, the dog cujo is bitten by a bat infected with rabbies and inturn turns into an angry violent beast of a dog. Who "takes hostage" a mother and son who only protection is there car.
Now stephen kings book revolves around the mothers struggle in the car and trying as hard as she can to make sure her and her son get out, and this is what the film covers. However the film doesn't cover and of the sub-plot that the book has which is almost key to the story in the understanding of the characters. Now I can understand that due to time constraints it would not always be possible to cover all the plot from the story into the film, however i feel the ending of the book was a much stronger one then that of the film and feel that it was a shame that the film "chickened out" of the ending.
All in all a watchable film and a fair adaptation of the book. But fans of the book will probably be disappointed.
6 out of 10 (being extra kind)
