The Dark Knight (2008)
More than just a comic book adaptation
I was one of those casual Batman fan's before Batman Begins came. Always more of a Spider-Man and Marvel type of guy. However after witnessing Batman Begins I truly became a fan. The ending in Batman Begins left me wanting more and left me with high and almost unrealistic expectations for a sequel. So when I finally made it to the theaters to watch the Dark Knight I fully expected a great movie, and right after witnessing the first six minutes of the film, I realized that my expectations had become fulfilled. Christopher Nolan had created a masterpiece with this film. Sure there were areas of imperfection scattered throughout the film, however they did not take away from the greatness of the film. Some of these imperfections included how Nolan dealt with the Scarecrow character, Christian Bale's voice as Batman took some time to get use to also, and the length of the film. However all of these are nitpicks at an otherwise nearly flawless film. Needless to say the scarecrow scene was put into this film for the fan's and for a "sense" of closure with him. The length of the film was not a problem to me at all as I was glued to the screen the whole running time, and Bale's voice-over as Batman was unnoticeable by the end of the film. The villains were excellent and were cast perfectly. Aaron Eckhart's role as Harvey Dent/Two-Face was nearly flawless and he won't receive enough praise for it. Heath Ledger's role as the Joker will be viewed as one of the greatest performance's in decades. Heath Ledger will have you laughing at disturbing scenes and you won't know why. He'll have you terrified at part's and shocked in others. You find yourself almost rooting for him in part's simply because you've never seen a villain like him before. His role as the Joker will no doubt earn him several posthumous award's, likely the academy award being one of them. You will never look at any of the character's on the screen as actor's, and that's what makes their performance's so brilliant. The story/screenplay were also done marvelously and will keep you entertained, shocked, as well as terrified in part's. The special effect's were also brilliant. The best part of this film for me however was how believable it all was. Believable a superhero film? Yes! And you will love this film for this exact reason as well. The replay value of this film is excellent as well. I've had friends that have seen this film five times already! This film is quite obviously the best comic book adaptation ever made. If you haven't seen this film yet. What are you waiting for?
The Skulls (2000)
Not the greatest, but worth a look
The Skulls was definitely an interesting concept, and contained some truly intriguing moments however good writing alone could not save this film. The bad acting (especially by Jackson and Harper) overshadows what could have been otherwise great moments in the film. However as a whole the acting did not affect the integrity and overall quality of the film. It truly does make one wonder, what this film could have been, had they actually attempted to cast better actors. The film was good, but left more to be desired. Its still entertainment and a viewer could do much worse than this movie, however they most likely could also do much better. Unless you have nothing better to watch and have two hours to waste, you should try your hand at another movie. The idea alone of The Skulls as a secret society was most likely what spawned the sequels, not this film.
