She Hate Me (2004)
An abject mess from an otherwise great director
And what sucks is that I really like Spike Lee. I am the only one of all of my friends who like him, and give him props whenever possible. I think most of his movies are great, with the only exception being School Daze and now this one. This movie suffers from the same problems as School Daze, only amplified. They both suffer from the "all over the map" syndrome. I am totally open to Spike Lee preaching, Bamboozled was a great movie with an important message, but it was just one message! I'm sorry, but I really couldn't keep up with all of the different sermons Spike was giving in this movie, and I didn't really understand them either. So, this is the best I could figure out: The government is evil, large corporations are evil, aids is killing blacks and whites don't care, (these are the easy ones) then I guess that Spike is trying to say something about fatherless black children which is hard to understand, then I guess he also has an opinion on sperm donation, but what is it? Also he thinks that blacks are suffering from diabetes due to hateful corporations/govt/white people, etc. Also the same score from Bamboozled is used without any changes at all!!!! This movie is too ambitious for its own good, and it exemplifies everything that Spike's critics complain about. Save your self some time, and rent some of Spike's great work like Bamboozled, Clockers, Do the Right Thing, Mo Better Blues, 25th hour, Malcolm X.
The Master of Disguise (2002)
Good candidate for the worst movie ever
Even horrible movies such as Howard the Duck, Caddyshack 2, and Nothing But Trouble at least are so bad that they are funny just for being so bad. This movie is just plain bad. Dana Carvey is so much better than this, a real shame.
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Total loss
George Lucas is a sellout. This "film" completely lacks the love, care, and imagination that went into episodes 4,5,6. The sad thing is, after seeing the wretched episodes 1 and 2, I will still go see episode 3 when it comes out, even though I'm sure it will suck. It is a testament to how good episodes 4,5,6 were that I (and I am not alone with this sentiment) will purposely go see a bad movie in the future. George Lucas' career embodies what is great about movies and what is wrong with movies at the same time.
Corky Romano (2001)
One of the all-time worst movies
I could only get through about 25 mins of it. Not one laugh in the 25 minutes I gave it, one of the most painful films I've ever had to endure. Chris Kattan is so nervous on screen that it made me nervous to watch him. Just a horrible movie.
Tart (2001)
They got me again
I wish they would just make a special section in the video rental stores for movies like this. The section would read: "Movies for lonely older men who like to watch young girls being naughty and wearing fetish clothes" I guess dominique swain, after lolita nd now this, is establishing herself as the queen of the dirty old man genre.
Glitter (2001)
Did you people see the same movie I saw?
This is one of the best films (to call it a "movie" wouldn't do it justice) I have ever seen. I don't know why Mariah Carey has spent all of her time in front of a microphone all these years when her true talent lies in front of the camera. The directing is top-notch here, and the stunning cinematography coupled with the breathtaking soundtrack makes this movie one of the all-time greats. The next time AFI puts out a 100 best movies of all time list look for this one to make it on the list.
Heist (2001)
Totally Pointless
I have enjoyed David Mamet projects such as Homicide, Glengarry Glen Ross, and State and Main. I even enjoyed the Spanish Prisoner to a fair extent other than the guessable ending. This movie is Mamet doing a parody of himself. There is a plot twist about every 3 minutes and you can see each one coming a mile away. The acting is totally uninspired from an otherwise great cast. The acting, directing, and writing are all phoned in on this one. This is a really big waste of time. Nothing new here in this recycled piece of garbage. I guess I should have known before I rented it when I saw that all of the critical acclaim on the box was from people I have never heard of. My usual rule is if I don't see either Ebert, Turan or Travers on the box I don't rent it. If I had stuck by that rule I wouldn't have lost 2 hours of my life.
Goat on Fire and Smiling Fish (1999)
Wow, what a great movie!
I consider myself to be more cynical, jaded, and negative than most people, but this movie will not allow it! This is an honest, feel-good movie with likeable characters and a story anyone can relate to. It is very well-written and well-acted as well. It also has a really good ending, which is very important. This is one of those movies I took a chance on in the rental store, and boy am I glad that I did! Enjoy!
