Romantic Killer (2022)
Sweet and Funny!
I'm no Anime critic, by any means. Normally and especially with the romance genre, every anime I watch can be a hit-or-miss for me. But recounting my experience waiting Romantic Killer, I have nothing but good things to talk about.
This anime approaches our protagonist with a classic "Magically Forced Romance" trope, which she actively fights against. Anzu is a female protagonist who knows what she wants, and she isn't going to let anyone tell her what she needs. When pushed into romantic meet-cutes and reunions, she's always managed to twist the situation into one that makes her more comfortable and most likely has the viewer chuckle. Anzu's relationships with her 'love interests' very clearly blossom into friendships that are supportive, sweet, and fun to watch.
Genuinely, give this a try.
Jim Henson's Turkey Hollow (2015)
Hallmark
It hurts to say, but this was a very blatant disappointment- I was entirely ready to immerse myself in yet another whimsical story produced by the Jim Henson company only to be met with a bland story, weak characters and weak storytelling with an underlying political tone that felt overwhelmingly annoying. This felt like it was produced to be featured on cable TV and it shows, unfortunately.
Of course, the actual puppet element of the film was held up to the standards the Jim Henson company has set with it's previous hits, I have no complaints about their design or movement. I think they were the best part of the movie.
Right off the bat, we're introduced to genuinely unpleasant characters the audience is expected to side with and care for through the rest of the film. They are not memorable nor are they interesting. Typical teenage sister who thinks she's too good to be off the grid is moved into a small town with her brother and Father as the result of a divorce. They stay with their stereotypical vegan-hippie aunt who is at war with her neighbor,an old man of a more conservative nature who disagrees with her farming methods. The aunt's husband has mysteriously died. Basement is full of mad ramblings of creatures as well as a machine to summon them. Young innocent brother drags sister to go into woods and summon monsters. Shenanigans ensue. They look for a large creature known among locals for large reward only to find it is fake and expose Aunt's rival farmer for using hormones and GMO's with Russian writing and soviet-colors to enhance the size of the turkeys he farms. Skip ahead through a lackluster scene and kids are found by aunt and father, rival farmer is exposed for unethical farming, thanksgiving with Monsters and the end.
I smell a heavy amount of censorship and program-hungry executive edits or lazy writing based off of an old story Henson had written for television. Disappointing, but, I guess I would have heard more about this movie had it been good. It's level of writing parallels that of Hallmark (no offense), and I just wish I could have seen more comedic charm I know the Henson company's films for.
Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)
What I've Been Waiting For
I'm no accredited critic, but I am what I assume is the target audience for this movie. And I am absolutely delighted. I feared the games as a child and watching these angry childhood fears bite someone in half made me so so happy. Among the other magnificent details of the surrounding setting, the production team went above and beyond creating the pieces of the animatronics by hand. Damned amazing skill. And the story was something I could be satisfied with as a previously lore-obsessed fan. (I recommend not trying to tie Mike up with every bit of knowledge you may have on the series. If I'm correct I believe he serves his purpose as one of the few survived security guards, and he drives the story forward with his own motivations.)
If Blumhouse wanted to push the springlock scene a little harder I believe they could have done so easily, but it was never in Cawthon's style to protect an excessive amount of gore. Besides, I feel we may get more of that upon Afton's return.
I am so grateful for how this game series was brought to life. I'm so grateful for the game knowledge I can share with my younger siblings, because who else would I share a stunned expression with upon seeing a familiar face on the screen. It brought back the love I had for the original few games and I'm so delighted by Cawthon's revival of it. Thank you.
