Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Wow.
I must admit that I have yet to see the original George A. Romero version, HOWEVER, I do own Night Of The Living Dead (black and white original) on DVD, and love it to pieces. Thus, I think that I'll likely enjoy the original of THIS film as well. I shall try to find that somewhere. Anyways, lets get back to breastax (as Madeline Kaun would say) and talk about this version. I thought the effects were very well done, and its realism is what really makes this stand out amongst competitors. It's just so amazing that they can take a plot that's so out-of-this-world and make it believable. This isn't to state that its plot is not predictable at times, but unlike lets say... The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, it doesn't get overly trying with predictability. No, this film becomes exciting and original for its realism and also for its moments that catch you off guard. Without ruining anything I'll just say there's one such moment near the end where I was shocked by an incredible mishap.
For these reasons I rate this film: WOW. And for those that prefer *'s I'll give it...
***1/2 out of 4, docking only on missing some opportunities to make us jump right out of our seats.
The Cable Guy (1996)
I like it.
I don't really have many complaints about this, sometimes i'll admit the dialogue is a little sick and twisted, but to me that's part of the attraction i have to it. I know when i first saw it the drastic role change of Carrey had me a little Closed-minded during the first few minutes. But that's the whole thing, it's change. Once you force yourself to realise that this isn't just another goofy Jim Carrey movie like The Mask, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber, etc.. etc... you ShOuLd be able to view it as it is: A dark comedy. It's twisted. But it's funny. Open your minds and SEE it as that. Don't just complain because it's nothing like he'd done before. (nor has really since.. except perhaps "The Truman Show") Not that it's necessarily a bad thing that Carrey has kept with these roles. There are a LOT of his movies where he's goofy that i have fallen in love with and own.
But i can also say that this is another one that has a place in our video collection. It's different, sure. It's twisted and dark, sure. But it's not exactly meant to keep you laughing all the way through, no. It's not that kind of movie. If you open your mind to this fact.. you just might enjoy it.
12 Monkeys (1995)
Different than expected, but amazing nonetheless. (warning: somewhat spoilers)
I loved this movie, it was just a fair bit more than i expected to see. The sheer truth to it is awesome, and i don't mean a truth to the science-fiction part (being that after all it is quite out-of-this-world) i mean the truth to the story. how it doesn't exactly end happily, like so many would have made this end, shows that it's more like life. not everything works out perfectly and happily ever after. It ends on a down-note, but it fits the movie. i thoroughly enjoyed it. (great acting by willis and pitt)
Loch Ness (1996)
better than expected...
the acting at first i thought seemed a little dry but really builds up character throughout the movie, now Ted Danson adds a great actor to the cast and the little girl really brightens up the movie, all in all not a bad flick for an afternoon movie.
7 out of 10.
