The Fall Guy (2024)
Quite a fun movie
I was pleasantly entertained throughout the movie. I knew that I wanted to see this movie since I first saw the previews and the director has delivered.
While the plot is nonsensical and characters are cartoonishly absurd, it is packed with movie references and humour.
There are only a couple of scenes towards the end that I thought were a bit too long or unnecessary, for the rest, it worked like clockwork.
Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt are both the chemistry and the ability to convincingly sell their characters to keep the story moving.
If you enjoy Deadpool like comedy and silly goons fights with even sillier motivations, then this movie will not disappoint.
Testament: The Story of Moses (2024)
Entertaining but not great
This series of three episode is entertaining as it recounts to the best of its abilities the story of Exodus. However, as much as I would like to rate this higher, the show does several Netflix things that break the immersion that their other historical series are also guilty of. For instance, the sets on a quick glance look realistic enough, but on closer inspection, it is clear that they saved a lot of money purchasing the basic package. One example is the hieroglyphs in Pharaoh's palace or Egyptian temple which look like they were drawn by Mr. Bean. Another issue that is distracting is the weird camera angles and close-up shots that Netflix's production decided to use in their interviews with the experts and scholars. Or when the experts says one thing, and then the narrative kind of ignores all of that and go in a different direction.
So all in all, it entertains, but could have been better.
Abigail (2024)
Vampyre Comedia
Abigail is better then one expects. It is a movie that does not take itself seriously while at the same time gives plenty of suspense as to who is really pulling the string. I did not look too much into this movie before seeing and I had vaguely remembered the trailer and being unimpressed by it. However, as I stated previously, the movie took a direction that I had not anticipated.
The cast is quite solid and the chemistry works as a group of misfits are just thrown in a room together with the guideline to make the best of the situation for 24 hours.
Sadly, while entertaining, the movie is jsut a bit too long for its own good and suffers from several plot holes that are jsut never addressed.
Furthermore, the backstory of the characters, while explained in the movie fell a bit short and not well written into the plot. It just felt that they couldn't think of a valid reason why this bunch had to work together or be present for the events of the movie.
All in all, it not a bad movie, but it is not a comedic master piece either. It just exists and valid way to spend 2 hours. I give it a 6 star.
Madame Web (2024)
MacGuffin Web
So MacGuffin Web or Madam MacGuffin is not a bad movie, but that does not mean that its a good movie either. It just exists. It entertains the mind for a couple of hours but it never is really able to surpass that.
I enjoyed the performance of Dakota Johnson, Adam Scott, and Tahar Rahim. Specially of the two former together in the early parts of the film But good performance doth not great movie make. Sadly, since the movie deals with modern technology and premonition, it suffers from several plot holes that the writers either never explained (or if they were explained, then they were left on the cutting table).
Additionally, while I remember being a brat in my teenage years, there were several awkward scenes, such as flirting with teenage boys in a dinner at 8 or 9 o'clock at night outside the city limits and dancing on the table. Sureeeee.
Argylle (2024)
The CAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is a cat in this movie, who is somewhat of a main character, and that's all you need to know! It really steal the show sometimes.
The good:
Story-wise, the plot twists are rather interesting. The story begins slowly but then rapidly takes off in a different direction.
Good performance from Cavill, Howard, Rockwell and Cena, who really captured the energy from their roles and had great chemistry.
The world they live in is not meant to be taken seriously, a much more tolerable version of John Wick. Got a few chuckles out of me. One of those movies where you need to suspend the disbelief as it is nonsensical action but at least it does not take itself too seriously, which makes it work.
The bad:
Part of the story is a bit too long as it repeats it self often bordering ad nauseum but stopping short of crossing that line.
Not enough screen time for the cat.
The neutral:
Some Kingsman references that took me a while to place.
The Beekeeper (2024)
Bee ready for some apian puns
This is not Bee movie. Well technically its a better version of it. The Beekeeper offers plenty of action and bee puns for everyone. A strange mix between Bee Movie and John Wick. I have enjoyed this movie more then I thought.
In this movie, Jason Statham portrays Adam Clay, a disgruntled beekeeper who goes on a killing rampage due to unforeseen events.
The storyline is a bit nonsensical since its the type of movie where the protagonist is on God-mode and law enforcements are just federal amateurs. But if you put aside logic, physics and how security works, you might just be entertained by the cheesy one liners.
Not the greatest movie ever, but entertaining enough to kill a Friday evening.
Im Westen nichts Neues (2022)
I wanted to like it, but....
I wanted to like this movie since "All Quiet On The Western Front" is one of my favorite piece of literature and I had seen the 1930 and it's 1979 remake, which I both enjoyed. However, the disappointment is that I came in watching the 2022 version with the assumption that it was a remake, when in fact it is an homage.
But first, I do have to say that the movie does a good job at pulling no punches at depicting the horrors and difficulties of trench warfare, which is an important part of the original story. That being said, because it is an homage, it takes certain liberties that distracted me. For one, the fast pacing does not fit with the original where Paul gradually changes from the optimistic teenager to one of hopelessness. In this version, it essentially takes place in the last week of the war and it seems that too much is happening before an armistice is signed.
Migration (2023)
Pretty good!
All and all, the movie itself was not bad. While it may have nonsensical plot (it is an animated film after all), I've enjoyed this more than I thought that I would. The animation and facial expressions were pretty good and the jokes delivery were excellent. Though it is clearly meant for children.
The short at the beginning might be slightly too long, but only by like 30 seconds to a minute. And for that one I was willing to suspend my disbelief on how lunar gravity works because there are minions in it. But given that it has been a long time since I have seen a Despicable Me movie, I was surprised to see the return of Vector.
Ferrari (2023)
I hope that Ferrari's cars are not as fast as this movie.
While it is an interesting and entertaining car commercial, not much actually happens in it. You do have 4 different plot points and only one of them is really resolved on screen. One of the issue with the film is that there are scenes that drag on for too long, such as staring at the camera for a minute while looking like you are thinking.
In any case, the commercial does leave the viewers with couple of central message, which are that Ferrari is nearing bankruptcy, that their drivers are reckless and that driving their cars is dangerous, and that I should not want to purchase or drive one.
I.... I think that was the message. At least, after 2 hours, that what I think that Ferrari was trying to say.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)
Meh, just meh! Essential Star Wars under the sea.
A rather weak script combine with a bit of Star Wars references. Jabba the Hut makes an appearance but even he cannot save this movie.
As mentioned the script was uninspiring, even if Aquaman does not take itself seriously, some of the delivery did not quite land. Couple with a confused story with a global warming subplot that is not really well integrated to the main story, it leaves this movie to be a meh.
You get to kill an hour and half but it feels like there were scenes that ought to have been longer were cut and the scenes that ought to have been cut were kept intact.
In the end, I might watch it again, though its not worth the 3-D boost. But watching it twice is more then enough.
Gen V (2023)
Interesting ideas but....
Having not watch The Boys, I came to see the first episodes with fresh eyes. The show has interesting ideas but too frequently resorts to phallic jokes to break up tensions or as a segue to another scenes. It's funny at first, but when that is your only gag, it becomes very repetitive, quite fast.
While the show has a good flow with events just happening after another, there were a couple of continuity errors where a barrier is set up for the character to circumvent, but then everyone acts as if that barrier was not there. For instance, guards apparently only hear someone if they are standing directly right in front of them, if someone is walking 10 seconds behind, might as well be a mouse. Or apparently students can just walk in a teaching staffs office (whether they are working thee or not) and log on to their computer without a password. Locks might as well be just a theoretical concept.
I do like Marie, as she plays the part of the innocent and idealistic freshman well. But I wonder if the show will explore the fact that characters really need therapy and whether or not they should continue to harm themselves to use their powers.
In the end, what I saw was entertaining, but I probably will not watch Gen Roman Numeral 5 it in its entirety for the aforementioned reasons (endless penis jokes and scenes that immediately abandon the tension that they had set set up).
