The Buccaneers (2023)
Vacuous nonsense.....
Fodder for the mindless or either easily pleased? Sorority sisters transported to the 1800s does not work on any level this soapy mish mash unlike Bridgerton that it was hoping to rip off, is neither charming or even watchable.
Buccaneers is a grating car crash of a show with awful dialogue and even worse acting ability. I barely got through 20mins without wanting to smash the TV. Apple+ have lost the plot much like this meandering and meaningless nonsense.
Its smug and humourlous attempt to ridicule the British class system only ridicules itself. The characters are mearly vapid caricatures think 90210 transported to the past. Better than Brigerton...? Brigerton was for grown ups as well as children or did I miss something?....
Penance (2020)
Predictable from start to finish
Trust Netflix to have picked up on this mediocre drivel, cheaply made with all cliches ticked.
The twists and turns are anything but. They might as well have sign posted them, for all the impact they had. Spoiler alert!! You could see what was coming from the moment they invited Jed in.
His apparent desire was as subtle as a brick, even the vicar saw it but sadly not the husband Neil Morrisey in suggesting Jed stay and babysit his fragile16 year old daughter???? The red flags just keep on coming as motherly instinct turns to wanting to rip Jeds clothes off.
No time for sensitivity as the heavy handed script plods on to the less than thrilling climax. Thankfully the meddling vicar lived just a shame this drama did.
Sweet Magnolias (2020)
Southern charm it is not
Unbelievably dated, cliched, predictable nonsensce. Little House on the prairie reinvented for a new audience. The acting is appalling and reinforces southerners as bible bashing hypocrites.
Incidently no clan members insight not to mention racial tensions but its only episode one, and from first viewing, I'm not expecting any messy issues to rock the boat such as maga enthusiasts rallying with pitch forks.
Just good clean southern wholesomeness, served up with peach pie and soundtracks that send you to sleep. Why oh why did Netflix greenlight this rubbish. British audiences are not this easily pleased give us shows like "Wednesday" please!!!
Glamorous (2023)
Tiresome and predictable
Any show that relies on cliches and stereotyping at its premise is going one way. Netflix might have thought they had backed a winner with Cattrall as the poster girl for successful older women but for me her performance lacks any believability or depth.
She is wooden and looks frankly bored as she delivers what is a lame and cringeworthy script. They do say pride will pinch and it is no coincidence that this dropped on the same day as "Just Like That" And while critics will continue to pick apart anything SJP, this trite dramedy froth is not in the same league.
As for the protagonist, you want to love him but from the opening scene when he encounters Cattrall, it's only going only one way and that is downhill fast. There is not one laugh to be had in the whole sorry script. In its rush to seem modern and inclusive what you get is another dated and soapy mess.
Ten Pound Poms (2023)
A story that goes nowhere
A soap like plot that in the end goes nowhere, even if you buy into the one dimensional storyline and characters you'll be left disappointed.
It's as if the program makers packed all the cliches into weekly episodes seeing the characters as either good salt of the earth types or pantomime villains. The dramatic saving at the end was so contrived it made me roll my eyes, alls well that ends well "If only"
No disrespect to the actors though they did the best job they could with what is a terrible script. I have no idea of the true history behind this program but I'm assuming it's not this having read other reviews?
It's a shame that the program makers instead of using stereotypical plot points didn't at least try and give an honest portrayal of this period in history.
