Imaginary (2024)
Fun and Scary Yet Lighthearted Horror with Meaningful Themes
This film has a Black woman in the leading role, and her character was handled with care and grace. I loved seeing her as there is not a ton of Black representation in horror, and many of the movies that do arise relate to racism itself (this story does not). There are plenty of jump-scares and there is an almost nostalgic atmosphere of chills throughout. The story was scary (and kept me up that night) but not overly evil or disturbing. There were twists and turns that I didn't see coming, and some that I did - but I enjoyed the ride. I highly recommend this for a weekend watch! I'm glad I caught it in theaters.
A Killer Romance (2023)
This is a hidden gem that you won't regret watching
This is a funny, quirky, action-packed film with Black characters in the leading roles! It's a fun movie showing representation in a genre that we don't often get to see. I highly recommend watching it. The movie doesn't appear to have the highest budget, and in some scenes some of the actors/lines aren't the best. I also felt my suspension of disbelief slipping at times. That said, my boyfriend and I both felt it was extremely entertaining for a Saturday night. There was a good bit of action, and the set was beautiful. There were blue rooms, maroon rooms, etc. In the couple's lovely home which made the background more vibrant and engaging. Generally, the theme is similar to Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
