Extinction (2018)
The kids... and some other stuff
This movie is quite ok.
Yes the kids are annoying.
They caused a lot of damage and death.
As soon as the plot was clear I rooted for the humans.
We're not always nice, but hey, it's our planet!
There are some holes in the story.
For example, why didn't the humans destroy the infrastructure. If you want to kill a city population, you should destroy all ways out of it. Also a certain bridge. Considering the load of flying stuff the humans brought. Further it's just kinda stupid to stop and hug for about a full minutes with 50 enemies on your tail.
But I can forgive the makers, because I still enjoyed myself.
4400 (2021)
I don't get the race debate
Ok, so most of the lead cast are black. So what.
The lead cast of Fresh Prince of Bell Air was black.
I dont have any issues with that.
What I dont really like is the race inequality that is so clearly presented in the show.
Why are all the guards in the hotel white and mean?
Why do they act like its 1960?
Its very possible some of them are bullies, but there usually are allso good guys, right?
So far Im not convinced this will be good, but I'll give it a chance.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
A very pleasant surprise
I will be honest. After the previews of this film I was not very enthusiastic. I didn't know this character from the Marvel universe either.
When the movie started I quickly got a "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" vibe. And I didn't mind at all, since that has been my favorite Asian movie for a long time.
The film tells a beautiful story, does it with sense and humor and the fantastic special effects that are characteristic of Marvel.
I quickly felt a bond with the three protagonists. And even the bad guy I could sympathize to a certain extent.
When the film was over I noticed that I immediately thought that this story could go much further.
I hope for a sequel!
Grimsby (2016)
Clumsy, rude and funny
I like gross humor. A comedian like Jimmy Carr or the Dutch Hans Teeuwen makes me laugh a lot. I was definitely in the right place with this movie.
The story takes you from joke to joke. One even less politically correct than the other. But underneath all those jokes there is still some serious undertone. However, it is mainly about the gross humor here.
Do you like humor that really spares no one, about people, animals, genitals, poo, pee and exceptional sacrifice using an exit?
Then this is the movie for you.
With you more of Rowan Atkinson or something like that? Then stay far away from this movie.
You have been warned:
Not suitable for delicate and/or sensitive souls.
Not suitable for politically correct people.
Star Trek: Prodigy (2021)
This is aweful
I tortured myself through 2,5 episodes, but enough is enough. The "main character" is so irritating I would have thrown him out of an airlock myself.
Beiden that, it doesn't feel like Star Trek.
Pass...
13 in de oorlog: Vernietiging (2009)
This is made for kids, but it drives the message home with a sledgehammer.
The whole 13 in de oorlog (13 in the war) series is very good. It places common children in World War 2 in the Netherlands and follews their lives during those years.
Two episodes are about the Jews and the holocaust.
In this episode we follow Roos. Her family was arrested and put in Kamp Westerbork, a camp where people only stayed for a while. Only her younger sister escaped and was saved by another family.
Roos is a lovely girl. Even in their grim situation she stays positive.
After a while Roos has to get on the train with her father and mother.
They don't know it yet, but their destination will be Auswitch.
After arrival she and her mother are seperated from the father. His faith is unknown, but the next time we see Roos, she is in the gas chamber with her mother.
Naked and afraid. The screen goes dark and that is it.
Yes, I do show this to my 12 year olds in class when I teach them about WW2. There is no way I can describe the suffering and the fears these people had, and do it better then this series does.
Sometimes tears do flow, but after watching this episode I am quite certain my students will never forget wat happened during thoose grim years.
The children learn that looking good or being nice didn't matter one bit when the Nazi's were commiting their cimes.
Ad Astra (2019)
Full of mistakes.
Acting was pretty good.
Effects were great.
Tempo was incredably slow.
But the inaccuracy about space.
You can't just stop a spaceship.
Explosions in space don't have air to create shockwaves, and so on.
And don't get me started about the "arr matey! "
Or the space monkies, lol...
Doctor Who: A Good Man Goes to War (2011)
Nice and dark
OK not the level of "Blink", but I enjoyed this episode a lot. And the cliffhanger was a surprise to me. Only too bad we know now Amy's daughter will die in some strange library on a far away world. I liked all the bad guys from the past coming to pay their debt. Would have been nice if there was a Dalek screaming "exterminate" at the monks, but you can't have it all. I don't think the day will ever come that they will help the doctor anyways. I did like the dark setting of this episode, and the obvious anger in the doctor. And Amy caught be by surprise as I really thought she would think the doctor would save here, but no, Rory to the rescue! Well, now we'll have to wait till autumn again. I really hate it that they only make so few episodes in a row, but on the other hand, it gives me something to look out for :D
Doctor Who: Blink (2007)
"We love to be scared"
I have loved Doctor Who since the series started again in 2005. All 3 doctors were and are very good. Strange that the episode where the doctor had the smallest part might be the best of all.
I think I have watched this episode about 10 times now. I even used it in my school. For English class. The words in this episode are easy and short, so my 12 year old students can understand most of it without subtitles. And they will never forget, I'm certain of that. "Don't turn your head, don't blink", they can still translate those words without problems.
Before I had some doubts, maybe the episode would prove too scary, but these ages is what the series are made for in the first place. So we had a great episode altogether with a scream fest when the DVD ended and they stared the statue in the face.
Doctor Who now has about 20 new fans, and I know I can safely let them watch all other episodes, because it won't get as scary as this one again!
