My Apocalyptic Thanksgiving (2022)
A delightful film about the power of forgiveness and family!
What a wonderful surprise this indie flick turned out to be. Many heart tugging moments with a star turn by actor Joshua Warren Bush. Oh and there are zombies too!
There was some nice interplay between the movie within a movie, and the movie.
All made possible by strong writing. The score was another high note, pun intended.
The themes of family and forgiveness are explored nicely with really good ending, not unlike the ending of the Wizard of Oz.
To be sure there are times when the budget constraints are obvious and some members of the cast are stronger than others. Yet there are some nice performances, including Callie Gilbert as the daughter in the zombi apocalypse.
8 Winds (2021)
A quirky neo noir find!
I love this quirky film! It has a slow burn so that when you are drawn into the story, as you will be, you forget its budget limitations. Once it gets going it grabs your attention as small and important clues are revealed in unexpected places.
It is at once a Hitchcockian political thriller and a story of love and sacrifice. It reminds me a lot of Chinatown, The Long Goodbye, and Antonioni's The Passenger.
Also there is such great chemistry between the two lead actors that you really have someone to root for.
Robert Davi! He turns in an incredible performance with such nuances and vulnerability, it is some of his best work IMHO.
There is also some wonderful cinematography that creates pure cinematic poetry.
Across the Universe (2007)
without doubt the best movie of 2007!!!!!!!!!!!!!
totally captivating and an enthralling experience. the only film to really move me this past year! brilliantly conceived and executed with imagination that is refreshing! it took some stones to come with this structure, re-envision the iconic characters of the 1960 and then to weave the Beatles song catalog into a vibrate narrative. that alone was impressive, but add to the some truly inspired voices and performances and it makes for a grand journey. that said it suffers slightly from the standard musical problem in that the exposition gets redundant when spoken vs. songs scenes are used. for me the musical number were far more engaging, due in no small part the genius of the Beatles. WATCH THIS FILM!
