Kill or Be Killed (2015)
Super pleasant surprise
I watched it without expecting much, and was drawn into right away. A lot of modern westerns are pretty forgettable, really, and very few bring anything new to the genre. KILL OR BE KILLED is different, it's got style, it's violent, it's funny, it's dark, and it keeps you watching. A lot of the acting might be the weakest aspect initially, but it is easy to overlook once you get into it. The characters are likable, even though they are scummy, and the filmmakers do a decent job capturing a spirit of the old west that is believable enough, and still injects a quirky and unique edge...
It's got Edwin Neal and Michael Berryman in bit parts too, which I love to see.
Crazy Murder (2014)
Nope...
The only reason I felt compelled to give it more than one star is for the dedication of the lead actor, and the intensity of the energy he maintained. Otherwise, there was really nothing of value to the whole production. It is shocking, and super gory, but has no point and is ultimately completely empty. The effects were not done well, which only made the violence comedic, not to mention the ridiculous number of victims he manages to get away with killing openly on the city streets.
There couldn't possibly have been a script, but it might have helped the actor say more than just one word salad after another. It was impressive at times, but got old real quick. I'm not certain what the filmmakers wanted to say with this one, but I wouldn't bother looking for it....
Chef (2014)
Whatever
Started watching it knowing very little, just generally liked Jon Favreau. The acting was fine all around, but the script was just plain weak. It seemed to be trying really hard to be a feel-good type of indie flick, but the story was full of irritating holes, and I found no reason to really care about any of the characters, other than because I was told to. Favreau is talented, but this was just a clear miss.
Granted, I watched the whole thing, but I ultimately regretted it, because it never got any better. After 15 minutes I was pretty certain it sucked, and I should've stopped there, but I hate having crap in my "Continue watching" list...
