Succession: Connor's Wedding (2023)
Viva La Vida
Logan Roy was a force to behold. I was complaining in my last review how Logan didn't want to lose control, to be the man until the end of time. He won in that sense. Until the last moment he was playing the way he loved to play. Being ruthless.
But we don't even see Logan a lot this episode, because despite owning everything in life, his death doesn't belong to him. His death is about everyone adjacent to him, everyone with something to gain or something to lose.
Connor doesn't really care. And rightly so. His father chose to not even drop by at his wedding, to even suggest that he doesn't plan on coming. To Connor this is just closure, to accept that he didn't love you, that from now on you don't have to even hope.
Roman being in denial hurt me. He finally had the courage to stand up to his terrible father, and now those words will hurt him for then they could ever hurt Logan. It's painful how hard it is for them to say that Logan was a good parent, even after his death.
Kendall walking up to Shiv and her sobbing just proved again how good these actors are. It broke me a little, how desperate they were to just get a little more information. Really how things work out when you get such a news.
Standing up against Logan was keeping the siblings together, and it would be interesting to see how the dynamic changes. Suddenly, everyone has a shot. And that includes the old guard.
Things are going to be interesting, and despite how despicable he was, I will miss Logan Roy. The old king is dead, long live the king.
Succession: Rehearsal (2023)
The one where everyone refuses to change
Logan is unwilling to give up control. To sit down and rest. Now that he's cashing out he is looking for another project that'll keep him in control
Conor wants to stand aside and not get in anyone's way. He's okay with being forgotten, being unloved, as long as he can just have his peace.
Kendall is hell bent on screwing Logan. Even if it means his own prospects not working out. There are no limits to his self sabotage.
Shiv is manipulative. She still hides what she knows and who she's talking to. For the first time in her relationship with Tom she has less power and it is freaking her out.
Roman has shown tremendous growth, but his need for Logan's love and approval makes him do things against his self interest. Logan will lure him in again only for him to find that everything is a play, and nothing can be taken at face value.
I expect that unless everyone grows out of their worst instincts, they'll all crash and burn at the end.
Gaslight (2023)
Whodunnit
Gaslight is a classic whodunnit. First introduce a missing person, possibly dead. Introduce a wide variety of characters where everyone is suspicious. All but one person.
To end it, introduce a twist that was not hinted at all throughout the movie. Use this and neatly give us all the answers.
Cannot gaslight me into watching this ever again, but some things did work out well.
Vikrant shines as always. Everyone else seems pale in comparison. The dark mystery shots were very well done, horror was conveyed well.
Old video footage reminds of succession a little.
I guess anyone who has watched other movies in same genre knew the outcome, and thus made this underwhelming.
The White Lotus (2021)
can't love it can't hate it
Okay so I started it once before but dropped it, started again when friends pushed me a little. There are lots of humorous moments, and the performances are good.
But as a "satirical" show, it fails to give us a way to really understand the characters. It points out their flaws, yes, but not exactly what makes them tick.
I might be biased because I came into this with high expectations. It's a good show, but I feel it could have been more.
A major appeal for people were the steamy scenes, which I'll admit were pretty hot. There is a lot of nudity, mostly in the second season. But nudity or not, the second season beats the first by far.
The Night Manager: Zakhm (2023)
Gut wrenching setup
While the story is mostly restricted to the hotel premises, this episode perfectly sets up the characters and their motivations.
We recognise the corruption, the fear, and the power that our antagonists command. It is also clear that after two years no action has been taken despite the proof available.
The acting conveys the trust the girl puts in our protagonist, and the pain they feel for not being able to protect her from her fate.
One qualm is that while the protagonist who is new to this situation is doing everything right, while the experienced agent causes the girl's location to be found.
Since no one knew where the girl was, she could also have been hidden somewhere outside the hotel.
A great first episode, raising the bar for Indian television.
Farzi (2023)
Refreshing but falls short
Cinematography is a strong suit here, but it falls short in delivering in other ways.
Stealing is apparently really easy for these newbies, and just as easily they are able to get one of the largest projects from a really big player overseas.
If they're taking inspiration from breaking bad, they should have made a longer series taking us through how each step got them closer to a bigger scam. But everything came quickly, and fell down with the same speed.
The main duo is funny, and acting is decent overall.
The connection to family man is intriguing, and will definitely pull eyes for a second season.
The Last of Us: Kin (2023)
Taking a ride with my best friend.
Pedro does an amazing job showing how much Joel has started caring. He is visibly disappointed in Tommy, after months of searching for him only to find him living in peace. The panic attacks have taken a toll on Joel, making him feel weak. He still only trust his brother to take care of the one thing he hopes to accomplish.
Bella Ramsey is easily proving to be a great choice for Ellie, switching between intense emotion and dad jokes. The instant decision to continue with Joel solidifies her trust in him.
Loved the elderly couple, unbothered by the messy world.
Salt Lake City provided a little more information and carried the story forward, ending on another emotional moment. Ellie has been taking more responsibility throughout the season, and will have to be the one to take care of Joel for a change.
