Central Park (2020)
disappointing
I was super excited when I initially saw this show on Apple TV. I'm a huge fan of Bob's Burgers, Disenchantment, and Futurama, but this really missed the mark for me. I understand its not supposed to be the same as Bob's Burgers but its hard not to compare the two when there are so many similarities.
First of all, I'm not a huge fan of musicals, so I assume people who do like that kind of stuff would like this show, but the musical aspect of the show just seemed really forced in my opinion. One of the things I liked about the songs in Bob's burgers is the fact that none of them were too long, and the voices stayed true to the characters by not sounding too professional. Using voice actors who are actually good at singing was just annoying to me. The songs are too long, repetitive, and unnecessary to the plot.
I also didn't like the fact that Gad's character was narrating the whole show. I think that character was just totally unnecessary. I felt like every time he talked he was either spoiling the next scene by saying exactly what was about to happen, or pointing out out the obvious about what had just happened. The inclusion of his character made me feel like I was watching the whole show with that one annoying friend who won't stop talking during every episode. It takes away the part of watching that makes you think "oh I wonder what's going to happen next". You don't get to see how the story unfolds or make any connections yourself because they literally have a character in the show voicing all of those thoughts for you. To me this takes the joy out of watching.
Someone already mentioned this in another review but I think this would be a good show for young children who like Broadway and theater productions, but for a single adult who likes the bizarre witty comedy of adult animation it's pretty bad. The humor just wasn't there for me, and the constant singing made it that much worse.
Little Joe (2019)
Ruined a good movie with awful noises
The movie was good overall. I like the story and the acting was okay. It was a little slow but still made for a good movie. BUT THE MUSIC IS GOD AWFUL. I couldn't stand the repeated high pitched noises throughout the ENTIRE movie. I seriously wanted to rip my ears out for 90% of the movie because of the ringing. Maybe it was supposed to make viewers feel uncomfortable but it was just too much. I barely managed to make it through the whole thing. It's really disappointing because other than the ringing noises it was good but I will never watch this movie again and I don't think I'd recommend it to anyone else either because I guarantee you'll have a headache by the end of it.
Escaping the Madhouse: The Nellie Bly Story (2019)
If I could give zero stars I would
If they were going to turn a true story into pure fiction they could have at least made it interesting to watch. The only part of this movie that is even remotely similar to what really happened to Nelly Bly is the fact that she was a journalist and she faked her way into an insane asylum to write a story. Almost all of the characters were fake, and so was every detail about her experience there. To say that this movie is based on true events is a stretch to say the least. I also hated the ending. She shouldn't have forgiven the maid who sold her out, and since the rest of the movie was already a lie, I wish we would have gotten to see some kind of revenge taken against the abusive nurses and Grady other than the police just knocking at the door. At the end of the day they should have just told the real story and used details straight out of the book. In real life the women were treated much worse, they were not kept in good health, and the facility was not clean at all. She didn't get out because her husband saved her. In reality she wasn't even married yet and New York lawyers were the ones who arranged for her release. I really don't understand why lifetime would take an amazing story and turn it into such a fictional piece of crap, and then have the audacity to pass it off as a true. Read the book and don't waste your time on this movie. And if you do watch it, keep in mind that almost none of it actually happened despite what the movie description says.
