Barbarians (2020)
One Bad Apple...
A mostly enjoyable series, visually appealing, ruined overall by one character, Folkwin Wolfspear, who must be the most stupid, irritating character ever created. I spent most of the show hoping that someone, anyone, would kill him and put us out of our misery.
El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)
Something missing...
Breaking Bad is the best TV show of the past 15 years. In comparison, El Camino falls short, defined mostly by what is missing.
It's missing the further development of Jesse, it's missing the give and take with Walter, and it relies way too much on flashbacks. Instead of taking the story forward, it's happy to coast along on its laurels. Ultimately it's not really a movie, more like a couple of unremarkable episodes of BB. A missed opportunity.
Baby Driver (2017)
Saturday night fodder for the under 12s
This film wishes it were Tarantino, but is more like a bad 1990s music video.
Triple Frontier (2019)
More thoughtful than you might expect
Without giving too much away, this movie was more thoughtful than I had expected, less heist and more of an examination of greed and hubris.
IO (2019)
Thoughtful and Beautiful
Ignore the poor ratings. If you like your movies thought provoking and beautifully shot, you will enjoy this gentle and ultimately hopeful film.
You Were Never Really Here (2017)
Ostentatious directing squeezes any emotion out of the story
This starts out interesting, but the minimal plot is quickly throttled by the showy ostentatious directing style. Ramsay is clearly far more interested in showing how clever she is than actually developing the story or the characters. In the end this is a frustrating waste of an intense performance by Joaquin Phoenix.
Órbita 9 (2017)
Superior and thoughtful sci-fi
Highly original and thought provoking sci-fi. Ignore the low rating, well worth watching.
Small Crimes (2017)
The kind of film Netflix should be making
Don't believe the low rating. This is an excellent drama, well written, well acted, well directed.
