Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Absolutely brilliant and time flies by
No idea what others are saying about the length - but if you're someone giving this movie less than 8 you're just being ridiculous - I see 5s and 4s... seriously? So this is worse than garbage blockbuster action flicks? Please.
Scorsese has made his Schindlers List - it's a slow burn with a huge emotional punch - the three leads are all brilliant. Most impressive is Molly - she holds the whole film together emotionally and should get a seriously good look for an Oscar. DeNero was the best he's been in 2 decades and DiCaprio was flawlessly grey... do you like him or hate him? Impossible to tell. Absolutely brilliant film.
1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything (2021)
Phenomenal
What are the other reviewers watching? This was a sensational run through 1971 and how the music was central to the culture & influencing society in ways that 50 years later it doesn't do at all. It's a brilliant documentary showing exactly how different the music influence was at the time versus what we have now.
From Neil Young and Ohio to Marvin Gaye, Alice Cooper, Elton John, Bowie etc. It hits all the transformational voices that changed the world and delivered some of the best music ever written. Some reviewers have said it lacks direction, I couldn't disagree more - it's chaotic just as 1971 was chaotic - war, protests, cultural upheavals and great artists...
The Fabelmans (2022)
I've always been hard on Spielberg - but this... is brilliant
Steven Spielberg always left me entertained, but often disappointed in comparison with his fellow directors in his generation due to his often heavy handed sentimentality. In this film, it could have been even more of an issue as it's clearly a deeply personal film... it's not. It's absolutely a revelation. There isn't a misplaced scene & the acting is phenomenal.
I don't wish to add any details at all about the plot as it's something I think lovers of the cinema should see & they should see it in a theater. Don't stream this unless it's your only choice... not for CGI, but for the overwhelming power of the communal artistic experience of sitting in a dark room & having a story unfold. Beautiful. Bravo!
