Wo he wo de zu guo (2019)
Complete Communist Propaganda
Sadly, every Asian person in the screening I was in applauded at the end of the movie so the brainwashing is long-lasting.
I wonder if the directors were coerced into making these short films by the "party" with the threat of re-education camp.
It was just utterly unrealistic to portray Chinese people as ecstatic when the communist took over the country. I'd guess at most they had no ideas what was going on. How they show all the people in Hong Kong tearing up when it was returned to China was just such a blatant lie considering what's going on in HK right now (10/2019).
Freaks (2018)
Whoever funded this film should be fired!
In a tired and overstayed YA movies where government is hunting "kids with powers," we have another movie that is recycling the exact same premise without bringing anything new.
Even the title is lazy because X-Men was already taken. The powers are convenient and vague but dubious because the writers lack imagination as how to use them.
These are not filmmakers that should be allowed to write their own script, let along directing anything that's released in theater.
The two-sentence premise was misleading and I went to see the movie hoping that it's something new and unique.
Night of the Living Dead (2006)
I wished they didn't call this NOTLD
This movie is truly an insult to George Romero. The acting and the zombie effect were barely above normal but the story is so weak. It's essentially a zombie movie taking place in a pot farm. The pot humors aren't funny at all and they never ever gotten around to barricading the windows.
Yes, they added nudity but was that remotely necessary?
The ending was also very weak with Barb just standing there even though she was holding a gun and could have run. They had a perfectly good movie from which to base this movie on and they still managed to botch it up. I really do wonder about all these direct-to-DVD horror movies that have no reasons for being made and can only trick people into buying because there are no reviews.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)
Very Unoriginal
The movie would have been okay if it followed the original premise of a film crew following a soon-to-be serial killer. However, that premise was abandoned halfway through and the remainder of the movie followed very generic slasher story.
The premise would have worked if the movie was kept straight like Blair Witch but the director didn't know any better. All the references to other slasher films have already been done (relatively intelligently) in Screams franchise.
Not the worst horror movie I have ever seen but it's pretty close. I'd be more forgiving if this was made on a shoestring budget (it sure looks it) but the "making of" documentary showed a sizable crew and even mentioned catering.
I can see why this movie sat on a shelf for two years before it was released.
