Leave the World Behind (2023)
Poorly written and cheap ending
I am all about an ending that is ambiguous. I love them. I almost need them. This was cliche and poorly written. The characters took 180 degree turns in the middle of the film. Unnecessary clues and shallow comments. Fake love and soap opera dramas that never lead anywhere. They were absolutely oblivious to Chekhov's Gun and never gave Eve a slight bit of resolution to any of it.
This was a Disney ride that was all about surprises and BS. It was filmed in a unique way, but I would not at all give any awards for uniqueness. It was nothing more than false dead ends... none of it meant anything.
The ending made me despise this movie. I was critical all the way through it and yet I held on believing it might have some poignant ending.
It didn't.
Aliens?? No
Government?? Maybe
Secret society? Maybe
A. I.? My best guess
But ending on Friends???
There is no inherent depth, philosophy or
existential value to this movie.
It is nothing more than entertainment and I will NOT be thinking about it tomorrow.
The Killer (2023)
I needed more
This was a strained effort of being elusive and existential. And it came out as a poorly filmed movie filled with action scenes and shallow inner monologues.
The beginning monologue laid such a good foundation and very quickly shifted to a singular statement repeated over and over again. The quiet lack of dialogue was forced and felt like Fincher was trying WAY too hard to be raw and secretive, as if by holding back dialogue he was creating mystery. There was little human emotional depth and even the scotch scene was forced and lacked realism. I searched for more meaning and failed to find it.
Meh.
White Savior: Racism in the American Church (2019)
Horribly biased, making up data
Overly cookie cutter assumptions made. Within the first 3 minutes the narrator (which was poorly recorded and mixed) had explained to us without justifiable cause, data or historical references that those generations before us had never seen race or skin color differences. In one broad crayon stroke they had laid foundation for an argument that was then permeated throughout the rest of this ideological... uhhh I mean, documentary. I've been studying, history, neurological development, genome research, philosophy and biological and evolutionary development as well as the history of religions and myths for the last 15 years.
This is a mocking depiction of humanity. And while I completely agree with the initial premise of the message I vehemently disagree when a biased, uneducated message is cloaked in the robes of an educational documentary. Propaganda exists in both sides of the proverbial political coin... both are drawn as easily classified caricatures of the opposing side when, in reality, everything is a muddy mess. I was hoping to see this 90 minute movie and find some good information to help shed some light on that mud and instead it focused on throwing mud and misleading the viewer into their own biased narrative.
