Father of Flies (2021)
Watched it twice
I watched this movie last year, and again tonight.
I adored the dreamlike cinematography. This movie has a melancholic atmosphere to it and you never shake the feeling that something dreadful might happen.
On my second rewatch, I realized there are lots of little clues scattered throughout the film that give away what may have happened.
The characters were just right for the storyline, and the actors performed their roles well. I liked the slight air of ambiguity as to what might have occurred or might be occurring.
There are some genuinely scary moments, which I appreciated even more on the second rewatch. They are probably what upped my rating from a 6 to an 8.
Overall this is a beautifully shot movie, well-acted, with a decent storyline, and some paranormal scares that horror fans may appreciate. I'll probably watch it a third time in the fall or in winter, tucked under my blanket, next to my cat.
Leap Year (2010)
My feel good movie
I've been coming back to this movie for 13 years now.
I'll be honest. After my latest rewatch, I don't think the two leads have a ton of chemistry. But they're both great in their roles. And somehow they make it work, despite not having Keira Knightley and James McAvoy levels of sparks flying. They're just right for this setting.
I love everything about this movie from the start, to the pace, to the visuals, to the music, almost to the end. The end is a little wonky and abrupt for my liking but I still like it anyway.
The song Only Love Can Break Your Heart from this movie was my alarm, while I was at university, for 4 years. I still love it so much.
I come back to this movie at least once every few years because it feels like home.
If you want something cozy, light, and sweet, this is the right movie for you.
Devil in the Dark (2017)
Had to come back to it
I started watching this movie on a Friday, got annoyed with the lack of horror in the first half, and stopped watching. Came back to it on a Sunday and grew to actually enjoy the initial dialogue between the brothers and the set up for their eventual hunting trip.
This movie is more of a drama-horror, and does a good job building up the atmosphere. The actors also worked well together and carried the dialogue nicely.
The scares were well-executed, not cheap, and where there is a jump scare, it is aptly applied.
Overall, it's a good movie to get you in the mood for chilly weather and has rewatch value.
Mister Creep (2022)
Genuinely creeped me out
Keeps you on the edge of your seat constantly. The Mister Creep character was original and well done. The atmosphere stays ominous and spooky throughout. I found myself covering my eyes and peeping through my fingers during a few scenes.
The acting is good without being over-the-top-annoying as is the case with many horror films.
I've seen nearly all of this director's films. I enjoy them because they seem made by a horror fan, for horror fans, as I saw someone else put it. Mister Creep is, without a doubt, his best offering yet. I'd definitely rewatch it.
If you enjoyed movies like Horror In The High Desert 1 & 2, you may enjoy this one also. (The vibe of Mister Creep reminded me somewhat of Horror In The High Desert 2.)
Disquiet (2023)
Quite liked it
It's fast paced, keeps you guessing (though you figure out what's going on after a while) and was well-acted. The timing of this movie was just right too; any longer and it would've become a drag.
I like Jonathan Rhys Meyers and I liked him in this movie. His character wasn't explored as deeply as I would've liked but he displayed enough depth for the situation at hand.
Overall this is an enjoyable movie for a Friday/Saturday night and/or if you want something fun to watch with close friends who enjoy the horror genre and aren't the type to start scoffing and guffawing at anything they might deem unrealistic.
Spoilers below:

My lazy interpretation was, the hospital was a purgatory of sorts, even though the old man in the wheelchair implies it wasn't.
My SO said it was like a less creepy version of the horror game The Evil Within, and I agree with that assessment.
Deadware (2021)
Fun for a chill night in
If your SO is like mine and can't stand anything but Band Of Brothers-quality television, this is a great movie to watch with your cat or BFF, both of whom are hopefully really chill and just enjoy the company/vibes more than anything else.
The low-budget situation works in this scenario. I stayed interested the whole time and found myself genuinely spooked by a few scenes.
Both actors played off well against each other. Ali Alkhafaji's performance in particular stood out to me.
If, like me, you enjoyed any of the following films, you may enjoy this one too:
- Host (2020)
- Horror In The High Desert (2021)
- Butterfly Kisses (2018)
- The Lost Footage of Leah Sullivan (2018)
- Bad Ben (2016)
The movies above are just a few (if somewhat obscure - that was intentional) examples of found footage flicks I have enjoyed.
Someone else said this is a horror film made by horror fans and that's about right.
Harry & Meghan (2022)
Reality trash, and not the fun kind
The terrible twosome continue to bring nothing new to the table. More potshots at their respective families and Britain as a whole. Some disrespect of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Because the have no valuable, tradable skills, all they can do is keep aiming vitriol at their families for monetary gain.
Meghan Markle is an astounding study in narcissism; a textbook case. Checks off all the boxes. The only thing interesting about this reality series is how Meghan continues to stay pressed about Catherine, Princess of Wales, while Catherine has yet to publicly say a word about Meghan.
Harry's Oedipus complex stays flourishing. He is an angry little manchild, seething with simmering rage and envy (at what? His brother, for being the firstborn? His father, for cutting him off financially at age 37?). No one ever accused Harry of being smart, but to stoop to this depth without a single thought about who it may hurt is low, even for him.
For a couple that preaches constantly about
"compassion in action", they would do well to stop buying awards and prestige, and learn that charity begins at home. Take heed, Netflix, and stop fueling this dumpster fire.
